Check the transmission ASAP. If you continue to drive it you will eventually ruin the engine.

Hello gurus in the house, I need help and guidance.
Recently I noticed that in the morning when I want to leave the house, the car will hesitate to move after I have put it in drive 'D'. After about 4 to 5 seconds, it will engage sometimes with a jerk and begin to move.
For the remaining part of the day it will not do it again untill the next day.
It happens every morning and whenever I have left the car for several (over 5 to 6) hours.

It's a 2008 Rav4.

What do I need to check or attend to, please.??

This are signal switch to your gear, please get those who uses machine to check engines to point out the issues associated to the gear. Once the switches are changed you go enjoy your life

Every morning at neutral gear press your accelerator for a 30 - 40 seconds engage to D.

Drive to a good vehicle maintenance centre and do a thorough
front wheel balancing and alignment before doing any other things.

Run a scan on the car but I think your transmission pump is the issue. 08033483129

So it has nothing to do with the oil?

I was contemplating changing the oil first before any repair work.

He is right. The seal has a lot to do with the oil. And they all work together to create pressure that help the transmission to work. Don't change any oil because there will be no result just do as the guy suggested.

Are you using the manufacturer recommended gear oil?

16months ago, i.e. Last year in February. Toyota ATF WS.

Still very much valid. WS oil needs not to be replaced under normal driving conditions

UPDATE!!!

I drained the transmission oil and pour in a new one (Toyota ATF WS, not original) and also changed the gearbox filter.
Boom, problem solved.

Do you mean you did not do anything about it and have been using it for like 4 years?

I have the same vehicle, same problem.

I drained and refilled the ATF (as part of preventive maintenance) once or twice over the years.

The problem started about 4 years ago. There was a time several years ago that the ATF ran low and that may have caused this delayed engagement. Mechanic checked the transmission and recommended replacement.

I have learned to live with it.

I check the level occasionally.

The fluid is a clear pink with no smell of burnt matter. I have topped up once in the last 9 months or so.

My options were quite limited when the diagnosis was made. Replacement? A new transmission for a car that's soon going to be 20 years old was out of the question.

Repair? A massive gamble. Transmission experts are not easy to find.

We just dey manage am dey go.

That is great. I am having same issues since January and I only top up the oil once. mine is 2010. I just took my mind off it but I hope it would not get worse
