A Special Court in Coimbatore has delivered a verdict, sentencing a young Nigerian national to 15 years in prison for smuggling banned narcotics from Delhi to Coimbatore.

In July 2021, officials from the Chennai Zonal Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) received intelligence inputs, indicating that narcotics were being smuggled from Delhi to Coimbatore via train.

Acting on this information, officials from the Chennai Zonal NCB were alerted and deployed to maintain strict surveillance at the Coimbatore Railway Station. Specifically, the officials conducted rigorous checks on train passengers.

During these checks, officials questioned a passenger, Ekwin Kingsley Ugochukwu, a Nigerian national arriving by train, on suspicion. Subsequently, they subjected his luggage to a thorough inspection. This inspection revealed that he was concealing approximately 2.235 kilograms of Amphetamine—a banned narcotic substance—hidden within eight separate parcels.

NCB officials stated that the international market value of the seized narcotics exceeded Rs one crore. Subsequent interrogation of Ekwin Kingsley revealed that the drugs had been smuggled from Delhi to Coimbatore by train, and that he had planned to sell them to youths and employees of IT firms in the city.

Consequently, officials registered a case against the young Nigerian national under the provisions of the Narcotics Control Act, arrested him, and remanded him to judicial custody. The officials filed the charge sheet for this case before the Special Court for Narcotics Control in Coimbatore in January 2022.

After conducting the trial and finding the accused guilty, the Special Court has now delivered its verdict, sentencing the Nigerian national to 15 years of rigorous imprisonment and imposing a fine of ₹1.5 lakh. Welcoming this verdict, officials from the Chennai Zonal Narcotics Control Bureau said, "In this year alone, convictions have been secured against offenders in seven cases. We are taking stringent measures to dismantle drug trafficking syndicates and to achieve the goal of a 'Drug Free India'."

Festus Keyamo Defends Tinubu From Drug Trafficking, Says Tinubu Mistakenly Shared Flats With Drug Lords

The Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Mr Festus Keyamo, has distanced the All Progressive Congress presidential candidata, Bola Tinubu, from being a drug baron who was involved in the traffic of narcotics in the United States.

Keyamo, who also doubles as APC Presidential Campaign spokesperson, noted that the former governor of Lagos State only shared a block of flat with drug barons about 30 years ago in the US.

His reaction is coming following documents of a Chicago District Court indicting and convicting Tinubu of drug dealings and money laundering in 1993.

The document which emerged online two days ago, described APC standard-bearer as a drug baron, adding that Tinubu entered a plea bargain, leading to the forfeiture of his assets to US authorities in 1993

It was also pointed out that Tinubu forfeited the sum of $460, 000 dollars in his bank account at First Heritage Bank to the US government.

Speaking on Wednesday on Channels TV, Mr Keyamo dismissed such claims, insisting that Tinubu was linked to drug peddlers who were his neighbours.

He said: “What happened was that Tinubu went to open an account. The address which he used in opening the account was the address used by these people. I think some blocks of flats. Maybe, he was happy to be in that block of flats too.

“So, they now link it that the other people they were investigating for narcotics are in the same address used by Asiwaju to open that account.’’

Tinubu is the reason why they go into drug business.

I have been on Nairaland since 2006 and arrests like this have always made the front page. Even as a kid decades ago, I have read similar stories on the dailies.

It's time for our brothers to understand that there is dignity in labour. Do clean legitimate business and show the next generation the right way of life.

We can't continue like this.
