One Bitter Truth You Should Know As An Employee by Rapmoney(op): 2:24pm On Jun 09
This is one bitter truth you should always remind yourself of as an employee. It is even worse for people who work in organisations owned by one person or a particular family.

Your employer will never pay you what will make you have enough resources to live a comfortable life.

REASONS:
1. You will be in a better position to walk out of situations that you don't like in the workplace.

2. You will be in a better position to resign and start your own business.

Most Nigerian employers are just like the government. They give you just what is enough for you to survive, and not to succeed.

As an employer, you should realize that the people working for you also have their personal dreams and visions. Your business is your vision, and not theirs. So as they work for you to build your vision, the job should as give them the platform to build theirs. If your vision is being built, and theirs remain unachievable, then there is something wrong with you and your business system.

Last week, I attended a webinar where one of the so-called Nigerian industry giants was admonishing workers to be dedicated and put in their best. I didn't have any issue with that, but when he concluded by saying that salary doesn't matter, that what matters is passion and dedication, I shook my head. We have really lost it! You fly first class to different parts of the world. You buy choice properties. Your kids attend some of the best schools abroad. All from the proceeds of your business, and you open your mouth to tell me that salary doesn't matter?

Re: One Bitter Truth You Should Know As An Employee by jenkate: 4:38pm On Jun 09
Honestly, everything you said is the plain truth. And let me add my own experience, the company I currently work for is a perfect example of this broken system. They don’t pay well, they don’t value staff, and the way they treat employees is nothing short of disrespectful. You give your time, your energy, your skills, and in return you’re treated like you’re easily replaceable.

The sad part is that many Nigerian employers have built a culture where workers are expected to “manage,” stay loyal, and be grateful for crumbs, while the owners enjoy the full benefits of everyone’s hard work. They preach passion, dedication, and sacrifice, but when it comes to compensation and welfare, they suddenly develop amnesia.

People have dreams. People have responsibilities. People want to grow. But how do you grow when your salary can’t even sustain you, talk less of helping you build anything meaningful?

Until employers start seeing their staff as human beings with goals, not tools, nothing will change. And that’s why many people are quietly planning their exit. Because at the end of the day, if you don’t build your own life, no employer will build it for you.

You have written well, someday when you become an employer, one or all of what you have written definitely would show where you belong.

Nothing you can do with a status quo, you can only do your best and leave the rest.

We have seen good employees turning to bad employers after they gained their freedoms. Likewise the other way round.

Good employees is not equal to good employers.

Bad employee doesn't equate bad employers.

do your best and leave the rest, dont impress or do eye services. though i work with no supervision and do all my duties without expecting any favor or complement.
Re: One Bitter Truth You Should Know As An Employee by TylerForbes: 4:42pm On Jun 09
Your job should only be a crooked ladder which you must strive to climb to get to your own destination. It shouldn't be your final destination but only a means to get there. Acquire more skills, get updated and walk out of there a winner. But its really difficult that's why I call it crooked.

Never get comfortable with a box. Always think outside of it.

Your second paragraph is so, so wrong. Some employers pay fair wages and it’s not their fault if you lack financial discipline or have so much needs. What you should rather say is that the business doesn’t exist to make you “wealthy “. In the good old days, Nigerian breweries pay their permanent staff fair wages that are enough to take care of their needs as per Nigerian living standards.

3. Irrespective of your skill, achievement or expertise, you are just a resource to your employer and and same time disposable and replaceable.

4. Always put at the back of your mind that, in your absence, the work will always go on and never stops!

This is what happens when people without actual experience write about things they have 0 knowledge of

People in oil companies, in telcos, consulting firms are all living very well.

It is actually the other way round - give a person a comfortable life and he will be able to focus on the job.

I get the frustration behind this view, especially in environments where employees feel underpaid, undervalued, or trapped in jobs that barely cover their needs. Those realities exist, and they shouldn't be ignored.

However, I don't think it's entirely accurate to say that employers deliberately pay workers just enough to survive so they won't leave. The truth is often more complicated. Many businesses, especially in developing economies, are also struggling with high operating costs, economic uncertainty, taxes, inflation, and competition. Not every employer is sitting on enormous profits while employees suffer.

It's also important to remember that employment is fundamentally an exchange of value. An employer pays for skills, time, and results. An employee chooses whether that exchange is worthwhile. If the compensation no longer matches the value being provided, workers have every right to seek better opportunities, negotiate better terms, acquire new skills, or pursue entrepreneurship.

That said, employers should never expect passion and dedication to replace fair compensation. Passion may inspire people to do great work, but passion does not pay rent, school fees, transportation costs, or medical bills. Telling employees that "salary doesn't matter" while enjoying the rewards of a successful business sends the wrong message.

The best organizations understand that business success and employee success are not opposing goals. When workers are fairly compensated, given opportunities to grow, and treated with respect, they become more productive, more committed, and more likely to contribute to the company's long-term success.

Employees are not just tools for building an employer's dream. They are people with dreams of their own. A healthy workplace creates room for both to thrive.
