Illimitable:
So if a Messi regen emerges today and everyone can see the talents and the high ceiling, United should not touch him because of high transfer fees and high wages?

How will United ever win a MAJOR trophy again with that attitude?

Mediocre players win mediocre trophies

Elite players win elite trophies.

INEOS are such a disgrace.

They have lost 2 of their prime targets to their rivals.
Na this same policy make Chelsea to chosse delap over osimhen

And now they are probably regretting such a foolish decision

Osimhen was 75M while Delap was 35M

Big teams that want to win trophies dont buy players because of the price, they buy players who can help them win trophies, choosing the cheaper option is one of the reason arsenal became a joke from 2008 till 2022

Status wise, Matteus is the midfield Version of Delap and he's going for 85m cheesy

I am all for spending / investing wisely and reasonably.

85m for a 21yr old from Relegated West Ham looks somehow tbh. The 250k/week rumoured salary even makes it worse.

I trust that our scouts would do their job well.

Then buy Anderson or Tonali, and enjoy money. We know what to do if we want to win

The transfer window is still open for the next 6 weeks.

Let's see how it pans out

when this club went down the stump up cash route, at least it was for players that were mostly already established, and we cannot even say it was a successful period.

dumping such amount and wages on players of Matheus Fernandes' levels will be an even bigger disgrace.

One universal law I know is:- if you buy cheap, you will pay thrice.

When Rice was available at £105m, United board concluded he was too expensive for that price and they settled for cheaper options.

They recruited bargain basement players like Ugarte(£50m), Mount(£60m), Amrabat(£10m loan fee). Those 3 options have not solved the midfield problem till date. The folks that paid £105m are the current PL champions.

When Kane was available for £100m in 2023, United also decided he was too expensive. They went for the cheaper options paying moderate fee on Hojlund(£70m), Zirkzee(£36m), Seško(£74m). United ended up spending £180m on a problem £100m Harry Kane could have solved.

Kane has won multiple titles while United have resold Hojlund and Zirkzee is on the chopping block. His growth has stagnated.

Man Utd is the epitome of Penny Wise Pound Foolish. cheesy

The club is doomed.

Unless you want us to focus only on non-EPL players.

When we were being fleeced and targeted by other clubs it was a disgrace but this situation is a little different.

Like I predicted, the Anderson deal has reset the market for EPL players (esp midfielders ) for this summer.

If we want to spend 60m on a midfielder it’s either we look outside the EPL or we go for a player much worse than Fernandes or an older player/soon out of contract player.

Newcastle are said to be asking for 100m pounds for Tonali.

All EPL clubs are experiencing the same issue. Yesterday’s price is not today’s price.

I will be patient and wait for the window to end before making a judgement but I am suspecting it will be another 1 step forward and 2 steps backward situation.

We spent money without purpose. It's not about paying money. There was no plan.

Buying pogba for example, who needs a Pirlo or kante like player to partner in the midfield but having McTom and Fred in midfield, is lack of planning.

We have ederson now, Maino, the next step is to get one solid guy irrespective of the money, then maybe promote an academy player or buy one prospect. That's a plan.

We now have surplus players we can't sell. Such a shame.

Tchouameni is not injury prone. Unless you mistake him for Camavinga?

Roy Keane relegated Nottingham Forest in 92/93 season.

Alex Ferguson still had to convince him to sign for Man Utd instead of Blackburn FC(the moneybags of Premier League) back then.

Sir Alex paid British record transfer fee for Keane in 1993 to sign him. Imagine if United had this INEOS attitude in 1993, Keane would never have played for Man Utd. Did Keane perform or not? cheesy

If your rivals are getting these players, you have no other choice than to get them too so you can compete. These players are going to make United’s rivals better and United will not be able to compete.

While it’s interesting that you had to dig 33 years into football history to find a single comparable case, the example still doesn’t hold.

Roy Keane wasn’t some random relegated punt ; he had already dragged lowly Nottingham Forest to two Wembley finals (1991 FA Cup, 1992 League Cup) and was a recognised, influential figure across Britain before United paid the British‑record fee for him.

Matheus Fernandes is nowhere near that profile. He’s been a standout in relegated Southampton and relegated West Ham, which is a completely different résumé.

He may develop into something valuable, but right now Spurs are taking a massive gamble - the type that United can’t be criticised for choosing not to participate in.

United paid British transfer record for Keane.

The £85m West Ham was asking isn’t the British transfer record. Elliot Anderson’s £130m is the British transfer record.

West Ham asked for £85m. That’s 65% of the British transfer record which is very very fair for a talent like Mateus Fernandes.

Keane of 92/93 is not different from Mateus Fernandes of 25/26. 21 years of age, the shining light in a relegated club that was seeking a move to a bigger club.

If United could pay a British transfer record for Keane, £85m should be a stroll in the park for Fernandes - especially for a club like United with a huge midfield problem.
