As far as we know, the bible said in 1 Peter 4:6 that for for this cause was the gospel preached also to them that are dead, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit.

So the answer to your question is that Jesus went to Hell and preached to them and those that repented followed him to Heaven.

As for those who died after Jesus came, they are all in hell as far as we know. You cannot enter heaven without Jesus.

I was once a full blown Christian and the more I got involved in the church, the more I started seeing things for what they really were... I saw hell on earth, if members didn't do enough evangelism throughout the month, they'd get whipped with a belt by our senior pastor, we'd each be allocated the amount of offering that we're expected to give as members depending on our family backgrounds, and almost everyone was fornicating in that church because apparently "the founding pastor didn't mind"... So I did give Christianity a chance, but I unfortunately ended up in deep depression and became suicidal, it took the work of a therapist to get me back into my senses... And this is one of the biggest churches in Africa.

I'm sorry and shocked about your experience. That Church did not represent JESUS CHRIST well. Recall HE drove those same kind of people from the temple. That's why the Bible says: looking into JESUS, the Author and Finisher of our faith. Unfortunately , no Church should be our model of who or what a Christian is, and you must never make any man that either. If GOD puts it in your heart, you could start a new relationship with HIM, just by reading the Bible and praying privately until you find a real community of believers that live according to the Word.
