Stop Phone Number Recycling In Nigeria Without Exhaustive Contact Attempts. by Baxilexi(op): 4:07pm On Jul 01
I recently experienced the tremendous upheaval of having my MTN phone number recycled despite being in the midst of active and crucial conversations that impact my career trajectory. The loss was overwhelming—suddenly, I found myself severed from essential contacts on WhatsApp and dangerously exposed, as the new phone number holder could potentially access my account. What unfolded was a distressing cascade of issues, all stemming from this unexpected policy. It’s an experience I wouldn’t wish on anyone else.

If you’ve experienced similar issues kindly sign this petition to enforce a change in this behavior.

I don't understand the point of this number recycling when they can easily generate more phone numbers. The Glo line I bought for data gets minimum of 10 calls from "touts" per week.

Funny thing is that I've never dialled any number with that line before let alone knowing the number of hand. The calls are super annoying.

The 7 digits after the service code can generate 99 million combinations, in a country of 250million I don’t see why we are actively recycling.

Secondly, why not avail the user the courtesy of trying to reach out to them. WhatsApp is the easiest channel, add the number on WhatsApp and ask if the owner still needs the number.

Thirdly the network can contact Banks/BVN to inquire about active banking processes. If USSD or alerts are sent to the number.

Phone numbers in today’s world are digital identities.
