State police is useless if the constitution establishing it doesn't clearly separate state and federal powers. Federal police should never have any jurisdiction over state police unless a federal crime is involved. |

If that's the case, no difference from what we have now. |

You’re still giving the president too much power. Let’s build strong institutions and not strong people. Let the court handle such issues. If you want to copy something, copy well and do as those you’re copying from did while also improving on the lapses they may have. Is this how the USA we copy do things? |

Pass the bill into law already. All these fear mongering will not stop it. We already know why Fulani and Islamic expansionists are against state police. So when the President abuses federal police, why are the governors not allowed to intervene? |

Story for the Gods, the State police should be funded and separate from the both state and federal. I understand the intention behind building safeguards, but giving the federal government the power to take over a state police force defeats the very essence of creating one. If Abuja can simply step in whenever it believes a governor has "abused" the state police, then what exactly makes it different from the centralized policing system we already have? The real issue isn't whether abuse can happen—it absolutely can. The question is: Who should check that abuse? The answer shouldn't be the Presidency. It should be independent institutions—the courts, a State Police Service Commission, the National Human Rights Commission, and other constitutionally empowered oversight bodies. Otherwise, we simply replace one form of political interference with another. Nigeria is a federation. Governors are elected by their people, just as the President is elected nationally. If we truly believe in federalism, then states should have enough constitutional autonomy to manage their own policing, while remaining accountable under the law. Ironically, one of the biggest arguments for state police has always been that the federal government cannot effectively police over 200 million people from Abuja. If that's true, then retaining the power to take over state police whenever there's a disagreement weakens the reform. We need checks and balances, not another layer of central control. A well-designed oversight mechanism, judicial review, and clear legal consequences for abuse will protect citizens far better than giving one level of government the power to overrule another. If we're serious about true federalism, then let's trust the institutions we create rather than designing them to remain dependent on the centre from day one. |

State police would have been one of the solutions to the problems we are having now, but unfortunately politics might take over from it especially in my state Akwa ibom. |

I will also suggest that state police should not be allowed by law to participate in elections as security agents. Governors will use them to rig and manipulate. |

The fight for supremacy between state and Federal police will be epic. Some will be overzealous. But regardless, we still want the state police. It's non negotiable at this point. We can't discard such initiative for the fear of being misused when it has not started at all. State Police we want. |

What if someone doesn't want to intervene because of political bias? I don't think we are matured yet for it. The politics of pepper eye won't allow it to work. |

SlavaUkraini:Without proper legislation, state Police will only be a tribalistic police. Imagine you are a Delta indigene resident in Osun state and you want to join Osun state Police based on where you are resident...will they allow the Delta man to join Osun state Police? |

Sheuns:If state govt are not checked, they will abuse state Police. And know that there is less media on the excesses of state govt as it was on presidency so they can do anything and get away with it. Just like Seriake Dickson and Woke abused power |

Confused lot. Is that what exists in the USA? Even the copy and paste, you guys can't do it properly. The president can't intervene if it is truly state police. The jurisdiction between the state and federal police will be different. I still maintain my position that Nigeria is not ready for state police because of our corrupt system. |
| Re: Barau Jibrin: President Can Intervene If Governors Abuse State Police by geoworldedu: 6:19pm On Jul 13 |
I know their plans. I know where they are heading. This means that when terrorists are in your state, don't command the state police immediately. Seek the permission of the federal government, because those terrorists could be federal-sponsored terrorists. If the governor catches them and they declare their sponsors, it would be traced back to the federal. We know them. |

Jd10k:Usually when there is a federal element. The jurisdictions are clear. State police are concerned with state laws, while the FBI focuses on federal laws. If that won't be the case in Nigeria, then state police is meaningless. Elementary stuff. |
| Re: Barau Jibrin: President Can Intervene If Governors Abuse State Police by AcadaWriter0: 7:13pm On Jul 13 |
Absolutely! It's a straightforward matter of policy. The state police are perfectly adequate, and the benefits are undeniable. It's a win-win. |
| Re: Barau Jibrin: President Can Intervene If Governors Abuse State Police by bentenny(m): 7:34pm On Jul 13 |
This is by far the weakest safeguard I have ever seen. I always knew this would happen. This guardrail will likely be subjected to different interpretation from both governor and president depending on their relationship. |
| Re: Barau Jibrin: President Can Intervene If Governors Abuse State Police by franksam209: 7:48pm On Jul 13 |
State police can never be the solution to insecurity, what weapon do they have? What weapon can a state afford? Even the whole Nigerian military with their armory couldn't end insecurity. On the other hand, the bad side of a state police will be worst than lawma, lasma, and VIO put together, infact those are the people that would get recruited and merged into the state police force. Secondly state police will become tribalized, how safe will you be as an igbo man surrounded by a Yoruba filled police squad at night. Or you as a Yoruba man having a police case with a hausa in a northern police station where everyone are hausa indigenes. Lastly your Governors becomes mini Gods. Tribalism and hatred towards fellow country men will skyrocket. |
