I also think it's fair to recognise what Madugu achieved with the girls however one feels about his coaching philosophy. I'm personally not a fan of his as I do not think he's the right coach for the Falcons, I however wont discount his WAFCON achievement. A second WAFCON win won't change my position btw until he replicates same success playing against top teams. The Super Falcons have dominated Africa for almost 3 decades, success has however evaded the team at the world stage. The closest we've had at achieving some success at the world stage was what Waldrum's team did at the last World Cup. The NFF's incompetence has sadly also meant he's had no opportunity to face top teams which should have given us an idea of how his team will fare against stiffer opposition. I'm hoping we get to see that soon, hopefully before the world cup, and should he achieve success on that front, I'll be his biggest fan.

I'm tempted quite frankly not to respond cause like I mentioned in an earlier post, most of the conversations aren't had in good faith so it's largely fruitless. Also folks on both sides of the argument already have their minds made up, but against my better judgement, I'll assume you're asking in good faith so I'll respond.

First my characterization, was that "the closest we've come to achieving some success" (important distinction). Now to the crux of the argument.

Since Nigeria started participating in the world cup since 1991, We've advanced from the group stage only 3 times. First in 1999, then in 2019 and 2023. In 1999, we advanced straight to the QF cause there was no round of 16 at the time because of the limited number of participants, so it's more or less the same leap as other times. 2019 we qualified as the last best 3rd team to have a chance. The difference between 2023 and the other 2 times is that 2023 was the first time in our history we didn't lose a game in regular time. It's the first time we had some semblance of respectable result against opponents of that cadre at the world stage. We literally turned the tide from a goal down against hosts Australia and held our own against the Olympics champions in Canada and almost knocked out the European Champions in England but for a badly executed penalty shootout.

In pervious world cups, we'll typically concede a basket load of goals, (you can go down the line of world cups and this was a consistent phenomenon) but 2023 was the first time we conceded in just one game, a game we eventually won. It is why it was considered our best world cup outing ever by most. Even if you rank the 1999 outing above it, it will still be that 2023 was the first time in 25 years we've had somewhat of a similar result so the argument still holds.

With due respect to Randy, a RO16 is still RO16 whether you qualified as third placed team or by conceding one goal in group stage. Your argument (closest thing) will only hold if we got to QF or even further.

Going by your logic, there's nothing special with what we achieved in 2023 WC because we also got to that stage in 2019.

I heavily criticized Randy and I don't really fancy Madugu's squad list sometimes but at the end of the day, result is what matters.

Taking over a team with structure and form is one thing, putting that team to good use is another thing entirely.

He gave us Esther, Michelle, Payne sisters, Echegini, he really integrated the diasporians in the team. Am also for the opportunity he gave Debbie to get a college degree.
