Mary Habila: You Do Not Need To Belong To NSP To Practice Physiotheraphy by Seun2019(op): 8:42pm On Jul 16
Today, I read an "official statement" from Nigeria Society of Physiotheraphy where it was stated that the late Mary Habila was not a physiotheraphist because she did not belong to the society.

Please see here: https://www.nairaland.com/8710907/mary-habila-not-registered-physiotherapist

This statement is not only misleading, it is grossly incorrect.

The essence of this topic is therefore not to defend the deceased (or Dave Umahi, the Minister of Works) but to enlighten those who may have been misled by the statement and state what the law says.

In Nigeria, you do not need to belong to the Nigeria Society of Physiotherapy (NSP) to legally practice physiotherapy in Nigeria.

Apart from being a graduate, you only need to be registered and licensed by the Medical Rehabilitation Therapists Board of Nigeria (MRTB).

MRTB is the federal government agency empowered by law to regulate the profession and issue practicing licenses.

Below are the four steps to legally practice physiotheraphy in Nigeria.

1. Earn a Degree: Hold a Bachelor of Physiotherapy (B.PT or BMR) or a Doctor of Physiotherapy (DPT) from an accredited university.

2. Complete Internship: Undergo a mandatory one-year clinical internship at an accredited hospital.

3. Register with the MRTB: Complete your registration and obtain your legal license.

4. Complete NYSC: Fulfill the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) requirement, if applicable.

So, you do not need to be a member of Nigerian Society of Physiotheraphy (NSP)

NSP is just a professional association and labor embodiment for physiotherapists in Nigeria.

It is nothing but a pressure group that defends the rights of therapists, provides continuing education, and offers professional indemnity.

Its membership is voluntary, though it is recommended for career networking and professional growth.

NSP is just like Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) which is another pressure group. You do not need to belong to NMA before you can practice medicine in Nigeria.

Thank you

Didn't you read the article.? NSP is like the NMA, a pressure group/trade union.

That organization just wanted to use the unfortunate incident to Publicize themselves. Never heard of them before.
Who cares if she's a registered member or not. Nigerians want only wants answers on how she died
Re: Mary Habila: You Do Not Need To Belong To NSP To Practice Physiotheraphy by ejieddy: 7:25pm On Jul 17
I agree with you. It's just like NSE for engineers and COREN. One gives the license to practice and regulates the profession, the other (NSE) is an association for Engineers. Though being a member of one grants you accelerated registration for the other.

The question would be was she registered with MRTB?

I guess she would be a registered Nurse and not an Auxiliary. I can't even imagine that the minister will have an auxiliary in his team. If na auxiliary she be, then there's cause to suspect but I don't think she's an auxiliary. She looks like a professional.

Associations are just a trade union. Membership is voluntary. It's politics and corruption that made most of these guys believe they are more important than they are. A medical doctor won a case against NMA few years back where he denounced his membership and stopped paying their dues. They kept harassing him and claiming he can't practice medicine in Nigeria. He took them to court and won.

You are the one who misquoted the NSP.
The NSP did not say she was not a registered Physiotherapist because she didn't belong to the society.

"Following verification through the appropriate regulatory channels, the name “Mary Habila,” as stated, does not appear on the database of registered physiotherapists"
What the NSP said is what I quoted here.

The data base of all practicing Physiotherapists in Nigeria is with MRTB which is the regulatory body and that data is readily available on demand

Writer should have done a better job in telling the public the school where late Habila graduated from and her year of graduation as well as the certificate she held, since they have changed the story from her being a physiotherapist to being a nurse.

What is holding Nigeria police from investigating her death?
Why is her father refusing autopsy?
Una go explain tire

Brethren, I want you to know that if any, and I mean ANY woman, tells you she's a massage therapist, physiotherapist or any variation of therapistism-ism (don't fact check me on that word), where they have to travel, spend one on one session, and touch the clients body, do not copy your Nigerian government and try to privatise that woman.

Re: Mary Habila: You Do Not Need To Belong To NSP To Practice Physiotheraphy by saintmm(m): 8:14pm On Jul 17
Well, it is well.
RIP to the deceased, if there's a foul play, then, let the players live forever and not die if it is possible. Everything hidden shall be made open at the right time.
The fact that the affidavit was not done in Kaduna but Ebonyi raised a question except the man is living in Ebonyi which I doubt.
All will be well. Let the deceased rest in peace Biko.

OP won't have access to that kind of detailed information. He would need a court order for that, and it's not like the judge would just give it out , one has to exactly explain why the info is needed. Even the police too need a court order for that info.

It's like someone asking to post your NIN online. Una go gree?

ERM, the police has commenced investigations.

As for autopsy, as someone who works in the medical field, when you tell patient's relatives to do autopsy, dem go say 'No thank you'. And that's for non suspicious deaths!
