Sorry, but why would a woman choose a male gyneacologist?
Re: The Pap Smear (Test For Cervical Cancer)! by bebe6(f): 12:18am On Mar 03, 2006
Some male gynecologist come highly recommended for things that might come along with the pap results smiley

I've had both a male (years ago) and female (presently) gynecologist and they are both highly recommended in their field. Really, it's all about who the best specialist will be to take care of your female needs.

It is very important for women to go for regular smear tests. Cervical cancer is one of the biggest killers of women.
The sad fact is that 90% women can be treated successfully if it is caught in time and it can only be detecting by regular screenings!.

So, go and have your goodies checked at least once every 4 years minimum :-)

Current general guidelines recommend that women have a Pap test at least once every 3 years, beginning about 3 years after they begin to have sexual intercourse, but no later than age 21. Experts recommend waiting about 3 years after the start of sexual activity to avoid overtreatment for common, temporary abnormal changes. It is safe to wait 3 years, because cervical cancer usually develops slowly. Cervical cancer is extremely rare in women under age 25.

Women ages 65 to 70 who have had at least three normal Pap tests and no abnormal Pap tests in the last 10 years may decide, after talking with their clinician, to stop having Pap tests. Women who have had a hysterectomy (surgery to remove the uterus and cervix) do not need to have a Pap test, unless the surgery was done as a treatment for precancer or cancer.

However, if you your last pap or colposcopy has detected cervical cell changes, then a more frequent pap smear may be done.
Re: The Pap Smear (Test For Cervical Cancer)! by bebe6(f): 9:32pm On Mar 05, 2006
um Reverend surely you are not a gynecologist, abi?

Who told you that women who have had a hysterectomy should not have pap test anymore? Do you know that even after women have this procedure done there is still a pocket there and women are still suppose to get pap test to monitor and make sure that no cysts, polyps, tumors, etc that can develop because the ovaries and tubes are there (unless they have a complete hysterectomy).

These tests are also done to detect what could be the cause of abnormal menstrual cycles. The pap is also performed for early detection of female complications w/in the reproductive system.

Please! Any woman in her right mind will have this test done every year (well-woman exam). Any specialist who knows their field will surely not tell a female to come back every 3 years.

As far as sex goes, women do not begin to get pap test when they become sexually active. They also get these test while they are virgins as well.

If we listened to current general guidelines, there would be many things that come upon woman that could have been diagnosed if detected early on, so it behooves any woman to know her body and take care of it accordingly.

I hope you don't go through life taking what articles or books say as the truth because honey nothing is more truthful than knowing for yourself.

LADIES PLS GO AND DO THE TESTS OOOO.
CA CERVIX IS THE HIGHEST KILLER OF WOMEN, NEXT TO BREAST CANCER.
THOUGH BREAST CANCER IS EASILY DETECTED BUT CA CERVIX IS NOT SINCE IT GROWS ON THE INSIDE. A PAP SMEAR TEST EVERY YEAR WILL DO THE TRICK. ITS BETTER TREATED WHEN DETECTED EARLIER.

THOUGH THE TEST IS QUITE PAINFUL BUT ITS ALL FOR THE BETTER.

Did you know they have developed a vaccine against cervical cancer! Fantastic! See here for more details: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/2495029.stm

And no, if you are a virgin, you do not need a pap smear. As the article I linked to says, cervical cancer is caused by the human papiloma virus (HPV), which is spread by intercourse.
Re: The Pap Smear (Test For Cervical Cancer)! by omoge(f): 1:28pm On Jan 24, 2007
they do that in Nigeria? How expensive would it be??

just curious so that i can send info/pass it on to friends and family.

it makes me sad that there are not enough nigerian women responding to this. i did a research in northern nigeria last year and was amazed at the results obtained. apart from information on the state of your cervical cells, other sti's like chlamydia, hpv, herpes, trichomonas can be detected in pap smears. 30% of women screened had at least one of these infections. we also found out that there was a relationship between trichomonas infection and hiv because 70% of all HIV+ patients had trichomonas and/or chlamydia.

these are alarming statistics yet these women find it very difficult to go for a pap smear. even though we did free screening because it was an APIN (aids prevention initiative in nigeria) initiative many women refused to come voluntarily. women please, pap smear is not just about cervical cancer other things can be detected which if treated will prevent problems on the long run.

it is not entirely correct to say cervical cancer is caused by HPV because it is a cancer and nobody knows the exact cause of cancers. however, certain strains of HPV are a major predisposing factor to cervical cancer as well as, wait for this, obesity, multiple sex partners, smoking, oral contraceptive use, early sexual intercourse, late child birth etc. the vaccine has not been as effective as thought work is going on to modify it.

it is almost impossible to do a pap smear on a virgin without disvirgining her.

most annoting, nigeria has no policy on cervical cancer screening, oh the country of my birth

you can insist on a female doctor. a vaginal exam is one of the most embarrasing exams on the face of the earth.
[s]what does a man know about a vagina aside what he reads in his textbook[/s]?

Cancer is a very deadly disease which every one should be careful on how he or she handles his life. What you eat and drink and how you take those things matters a lot. Check well on how you expose your skin to dangerous rays and body creams. Ladies should always pay attention on their breast as often as possible.
