When A Relationship With God Wasn't Enough To Save God's People, Israel

Israel being called God's people in this particular case wasn't by any man's declaration, but by God Himself, by virtue of the covenant He had with Abraham, that Abraham's descendants would be His people, and He will be their God.

Genesis 17:77(KJV)

And I will establish my covenant between me and thee and thy seed after thee in their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be a God unto thee, and to thy seed after thee.

However despite there existing this real everlasting covenant relationship between God and Israel, it wasn't enough for them to be saved from destruction by Him, if they yet worked iniquity and refused to repent from it.

Hence why they were destroyed severally by their enemies, and even banished from their ancestral land, which consequently laid desolate for many years, up to seventy years on at least one occasion, before their remnants were able to return. 2 Chronicles 36:15-2

This was exactly what God forewarned will happen if they followed the wickedness and abominable ways of the former land inhabitants, even that the land would spew them out just as it did to the others. Leviticus 18:26-28, 26:27-35.

God Himself also said it was only when Israel, His Own people according to Him, repented and turned away from their wicked ways (despite their everlasting covenant relationship), that He will hear their cry and come to their rescue.

2 Chronicles 7:14 (KJV)

If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

Therefore a relationship with God wasn't enough to save God's own people, Israel from destruction.

They needed to repent and turn from their wicked ways to be saved.

Even John the Baptist despite being a offspring of Abraham, and hence a bonafide part of the Abrahamic covenant relationship with God, knew much better than that, hence his warning to all those who thought being descendants of Abraham exempted them from destruction even if they refused to repent from their sins.

That was even before Jesus began to preach, however when He started He only corroborated the teachings of John, when He called the same descendants of Abraham, children of hell and of the devil, because their works were evil and not like the works of their father, Abraham.

Hence Jesus proved being a part of the everlasting Abrahamic covenant relationship with God, wasn't enough to save any of his descendants from destruction if they continued to do evil works.

Therefore if God couldn't spare His own people (by His everlasting covenant with Abraham) from destruction, when they continually sinned, and won't even hear them until they truly repented and turned from their sinful way, is it someone that doesn't have such an everlasting covenant relationship with God, that God would save if the person refused to repent but continues to sin?

God has proven overtime that any relationship He has with anyone is secondary to Him, if the person refused to repent and turn away from sin and iniquity.

Jesus Himself warned the lukewarm church He had relationship with, that He would spew them out of His mouth if they refused to repent, to prove that a relationship with Him isn't enough as long as one continues to work iniquity.

I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot.
So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.

God chose Abraham, Isaac and Jacob to become forefathers of only one person Christ Jesus {Galatians 3:16} so the covenant God had with Israel wasn't established on mere emotions in fact God said its when they (Israelites) stood firm for His laws that He will establish an everlasting relationship with them {Exodus 19:5} but again and again they destroyed that covenant by hurting His feelings! you can't even have a relationship with God if you don't repent and turn to God, like how does anyone expect to have a relationship with someone they are away from.

If there was a relationship, and you left God for the world, then repent and return to Him. Can't be outside God's ark and expect to be saved from the flood.

OP, there is no way you can have a relationship with God and not follow his laws and commands, anything apart from this is a no relationship.

God called Israel, there was a caveatr to the relationship- as long as you follow me and obey me, you will be the head and never the tail, this was the relationship. Israel broke the relationship and the curse of the covenant was activated against them since 70AD. This situation is the great tribulation which is going to end when we see Jesus, when he appears, when he is revealed from heaven.

When God reassured to Abraham about the covenant to save mankind Abraham concluded that he has a son now who will fulfill the role but God told him straight that the covenant has nothing to do with Ishmael:
