It is not right, old man.

We should not be using a road to dry food on it. It is better our agricultural engineers build drying machinery that could do that comfortbaly off the road.

That people were doing market near the railway lines for as long as I can recall does not mean that it was right either, for example
Until infrastructure for farmers is provided in mass, all the man to hustle for his family. No one will feed him.

This just social media content. It's normal to see people drying garri, egusi, elubo (yam flour), cassava, okro, pepper by the road sides. This is not an offence. grin grin grin grin grin
Re: Man Caught Sun Drying Cassava On A Newly Constructed Road In Ibadan by Jollos(m): 10:02am On Aug 06
All of this still comes down to a lack of basic necessities. It’s the long-term effect of bad governance on the poor.

Sometimes people do know what’s right. Ask the man if he’s happy sun-drying his food on the roadside — the very food he’ll later eat — and you’ll hear the frustration in his answer.

Maybe the poster over reacted , maybe.

Normally, what the man did isn't something that should be allowed en masse. If it continues, that place may just become a market hub for casava sellers and someone will start taxing them for it.

Talk about how we have such menance in Lagos. Market women will leave their store to sell on the main road and always fighting pedestrians and motorist if they happen to pass infront of th store anyhow . A two lane road will now become a one lane
About market in festac is a proper example.... I grew up not knowing that was a road that connected lagos badagry road

Nothing wrong here if you ask him. He was Sun drying on the Road shoulder and not on the main road.

Op ,this act and dangote trailer passing through the road, which one has more damage effect on the road ?

Sometimes I will just imagine the mind of Nigerians, from north, south, down to the east. You keep seeing some primitive nature.
Firstly you didn't spread any nylon or sack before drying your cassava.
Secondly, I all places, na road be the best place for him to dry it.

This same practice is all over Nigeria, I saw something like this in my way to Abuja immediately after lokoja.

If you want to change Nigeria for better many people will tag you a winch hunter, they might call you over Sabi.

The cassava in question...is it for eba? Is it for garri? What of the ewa? These are all APC recommended foods o!

Let them keep supporting him. See somebody asking if govt provides agro-processing equipment for him. So na govt go deh provide everything for them? Some of you just like defending nonsense, later they will be comparing Nigeria with UK, can this type of nonsense happen in the UK? Fact is most Nigerians behave anyhow and believe anything goes.

So it's the government responsibility to provide him with agro processing equipments right?

Nigerians with their entitlement.
Yes it is. It is not entitlement. There is a video of a Nigerian girl in Germany, where the government spent 22,000 Euros, to train her in driving and maintaining modern vans, and still bought a van for her?

It is not entitlement. It is the duty of the government.

Re: Man Caught Sun Drying Cassava On A Newly Constructed Road In Ibadan by MurderX: 10:06am On Aug 06
These roads run through villages and farms of the local people. These are their community corridors and as far as the roads are not in use, you cannot stop the villagers from using it for their insignificant local needs. How does a local farmer drying cassava on the road affect the road's integrity in any way? and once the roads are put in service, the villagers will stop the practice. This is a very irrelevant and trivial observation.

Absolutely.

To sun dry Cassava, yam flour, pepper etc on road shoulders has been with us for ages.

Perhaps this content creator hasn't really travelled well enough to see this being done all over Nigeria so, I will excuse him/her.

Yes. You people are so used to incompetent government and think it is normal.

The Chinese government has provided BYD with over $3.7 billion (€3.4 billion) in direct financial subsidies, plus billions more in broader industrial support, cheap loans, and battery supply-chain assistance. Operational filings show that BYD reported receiving roughly 10.41 billion yuan ($1.5 billion) in 2024 and 12.47 billion yuan ($1.8 billion) in 2025 alone under state operational subsidies.

It is a normal thing with roads in the interior of the country.

Pepper, yam flour, cassava flour, meat etc are usually processed this way.

It might not be normal to the Kenyan but thats the way we do it here.

Here is a man caught sun drying Cassava on the newly constructed expressway in Ibadan. This has caused a lot of uproar online as some people are criticizing the man and the non-challant attitude of most Nigerians towards basic amenities provided by the government. While some people view it from the hygiene perspective, to some, it is just the safety concern. Other people feel it is normal practice everywhere in Nigeria and it is natural. As a Nigerian, what are your views about this?

Video:
.

The issue is not really about the road being new, it's about why we still dry edible stuff on the road. This is one of the reasons I hate yam and cassava flour bought in the open market. There are deadly diseases claiming lives because of this dirty practice. You go soak garri like this come see animal poo inside....na lassa fever we dey play with.
They should arrest him.
Thank you.

Why are you people so okay with billions being looted than spent judiciously on the people? What is the collective wealth for if not things like providing in large scales for farmers?
Rather than rant, why not answer the simple question I asked?

A. After providing tools for every single farmer, why should the government stop there? Won't they build factories for you and I to process the agricultural goods? Won't they buy trucks for you and I to operate logistics businesses to transport the goods?

Love to hear your thoughts.

B. And since the government has refused, isn't it a good idea for us to vandalise all available public utilities to solve our individual desires? You can vandalise the roads while I vandalize the street lights to support my iron condemn business. While Seun can take the electric poles as his own share.

Wouldn't you agree?

Don't reply me without answering both questions.

What is bad in sun drying Cassava on the road?
Yeah, I doubt cassava can damage a road. But then the road could contaminate the cassava.

In its final major targeted push ending around 2020, China invested roughly 1.6 trillion yuan (about $246 billion USD) directly from government fiscal funds over an eight-year campaign. This effort lifted nearly 100 million rural residents out of absolute poverty.

Not looted or magic investment. Well tracked and directly monitored investment directly into poor people.

He needs to put food on the table 😞
He is not begging online for food or money.
Is there any other facilities for the rural dweller's ❓

We have to be realistic and not emotional ‼️

Yes, and he can then form a group and ask his local govenrment for help, or indigenes of the state or area who have experience in fabricating solutions to the problem can do so.

We should stop using poverty as an excuse for illegality. The food they are drying on the road is exposed to all sorts of pollution and dirt...and then it enters someone's stomach, and then person starts falling sick, and everyone blames everyone else for problem wey get simple solution.

You are just dribbling a simple point. The point is government should invest more and help ease the burden off young business people. Without fighting poverty, poverty will fight the efforts of the government. Simple.

Poverty is not an excuse for illegality it is a vice that fights progress. Fight poverty and illegality will reduce.

You know Nigerians are so used to bad government that they don't even understand what good government is all about. They don't even know the meaning of government. An average Nigerian thinks the government is just the gathering of the most powerful people in the country. They don't know government is there employees. Government is supposed to serve them with purpose and direction. They don't even know they have the right to sack the government they installed if they are not performing to there expectation.

Foolish people everywhere.
