These days, more and more women are choosing not to get married, let alone proposing a court marriage themselves.

As if court marriage in Nigeria benefits or protects women. It works against women's interests in many situations.

If a man rejects a good woman simply because she wants a court wedding, that is his choice. But he shouldn't assume opportunities like that will always come along.

No offence taken, but you are simply confused. Don't tell me that you think me explaining that I am no less deserving of respect as a person simply because I am a woman, and that I don't need a man to deserve respect, is somehow a toxic message against men.

How is pointing out the fact that some of us genuinely don't want marriage and dislike the idea of marriage the same as telling people who are genuinely interested in marriage not to get married?

I don't even like the idea of a woman acting selfishly after marriage. I believe that if a woman knows there are things her partner wants that she doesn't, she should discuss them with him before marriage rather than getting married and then acting in an unexpected way. I have brothers, and I wouldn't want them to marry a woman who would treat them unfairly. So why on earth would I advice women to treat men badly? A man is somebody's son just as a woman is somebody's daughter. He deserves peace, honesty, and happiness just as much as she does. So I believe that when a man and a woman decide to come together, they should both strive to create a peaceful and happy environment for each other.

What I will not agree with is someone forcing the idea that everyone wants to get married down my throat.

Fortunately, I am not a bitter or hurt woman because I have always been very picky about the kind of men I even agree to date. In fact, people around me don't even understand my lack of interest in marriage.

To me, marriage is just a social construct. I find it hard to convince myself that the exchange of saliva and other bodily fluids should be my reason for happiness and fulfilment. My message is simple: if you want to get married, then get married. Marriage can be a good thing. But those of us who don't want it shouldn't have it forced down our throats or be expected to deceive ourselves that it is what we want.

Marriage is not the criterion for happiness. It sounds quite ridiculous when people make marriage synonymous with happiness. Some people are unhappy in marriage, while others are happy in marriage.

I know acquaintances who became happier and lived more peaceful lives after marriage, and I know acquaintances who were happy and fulfilled on their own but became unhappy and lost their peace after getting married. I remember one particular acquaintance who was pressured into getting married. She married at 29, and not long afterwards she became one of the unhappiest people I knew.

Lol. The way some of you talk about this "Urhobo man" thing, one would think all Urhobo men are difficult, unexposed, arrogant cavemen.

Meanwhile, my husband is Urhobo and I'm Ibibio, and he is the complete opposite of the negative stereotype social media keeps pushing which sometimes is propagated by Urhobo men themselves.

We dated for EIGHT MONTHS before having our court and traditional weddings. We didn't have a church wedding because neither of us attends church or belongs to any religious denomination and that has worked perfectly for us.

At least try to analyse properly before you open your mouth wide to spout nonsense 😂🤣. Choices are simply divided. In Nigeria alone, there are more than 50 million female adults. Those less than 0.01% of desperate women coming online to seek a man do not represent every woman in Nigeria.

And if we even exclude proper logic and focus only on what we see online, you are still wrong, because even online, people's choices are divided. While some women are desperately seeking a man, some women are completely rejecting the idea of marriage.

It is high time you woke up and understood that you cannot tell other people how to feel, think, or react. If one woman even says she prefers a man who hits her, some of you would immediately start insisting that this is what every woman wants, as if women are customised robots that think alike. 😂🤣

I don't believe in anything church and I haven't attended any church for more than 15 years.
I don't have any business with any church,even here in the UK.
My parents, especially my mother,were not happy with our decision not to have a church wedding because they are church people.

My colleague got married in Nigeria 3 weeks ago at 42.
She had traditional and church wedding,both events 1 week apart.

On a different note, you should know that either customary marriage (aka traditional marriage) or statutory marriage (aka court marriage) is valid under Nigerian law. You dont have to do both.

Doing both is known as a "double-decker marriage".

The advantage of customary marriage is the easy dissolution (returning of bride price often ends the marriage), unlike court marriage that involves lawyers and is dragged for years.

If you do the statutory marriage, then you will get a marriage certificate from the registry. If you do customary marriage, then you should register the marriage at your local government and you will receive a customary certificate of marriage registration.

Both certificates are legal both locally and internationally.

I'm not against court marriage sha. If you really find a good woman, and you stay a good man to her, your marriage will last long, and no fear of what a divorce could cost you.

I'm only doing court wedding just to register it with the government,not that I love any woman.
