The Ordeal Of A Department In A Federal Teaching Hospital: A Call For Help by TheGuyJ(op): 11:21pm On Sep 08
Dear nairalanders,

I would like to seek your opinions and advice on a very critical matter.

My friend and I work in a Nigerian Federal Teaching Hospital as health practitioners, in different departments. The director of my friend's department is making life extremely difficult for staff of the department. He calls staff unprinted names and insults them in the presence of patients and patients' relatives, which, to my understanding, is contrary to the standards expected in the public service.
No one appears to feel comfortable challenging or even making suggestions to him. He exercises significant control over staff entitlements, including the approval of leave, and sometimes verbally posts staff to different locations at his discretion. He has also reportedly told staff who are uncomfortable with his decisions to resign.

His conduct is also well known within the town where the hospital is located. Many people in the community have personally witnessed his hostile and demeaning treatment of his subordinates during visits to the hospital.

He has been reported to the CMD on several occasions, but nothing appears to have been done. Interestingly, he often boasts that nobody can remove him from his position as a Director.

My questions are:

1. What are the appropriate ways to checkmate or hold such a person accountable within the Nigerian public service system?

2. Has anyone here experienced something similar in a Federal Teaching Hospital or other government institution? If so, how was the situation eventually handled?

3. What formal channels can affected staff use when internal complaints to the CMD appear to have yielded no result?

I would particularly appreciate responses from people with experience in the Nigerian public service, Hospitals, HR/industrial relations, or public-sector administration.

Thank you.

Op this is last valid option. Govt and politicians hate public embarrassment, they love to project a positive public image even when rotten inside.

Whoever he's banking on will turn his back on him once his raging fit becomes public knowledge.

It's so unfortunate that the powers that be are the ones ruling the affairs of your institution.
You just have to be prayerful, and diligent in your workplace, otherwise, it is a clear indication that the director operates in a higher level,
Occultic men boast much like that, you just have to save your life.

If your life depend on your job then take everything you get at the job as part of keeping your life intact.

Drop your ego by not counting patients or people in the community seeing you being talked to by your superior as anything to be concerned about.

Just face your job and stop wanting to be pampered and respected by your superior because the way must of you young doctors feel yourself despiting knowing little actually needs someone like this director to put you in your places. Be humble and learn to be a doctor not a decoration grin

I hope i have not sounded like the director to you grin

Follow this advice, and if possible, if you have a cordial relationship with the patient, you can tell one of them to do the video for you.

Is this an advice at all. Because he should tolerate every insults because his livelihood depends on the work. Aba, even there's a limit to insults at every private sectors talk less of public.

OP, is obviously a Gen-Z staff, and a product of one of these private universities where they're pampered. Contrastingly, the director na older gen trained in probably one of the federal/state universities and mentored to the top through a hierarchical and stern system with a no-nonsense approach. Gen-Zs find it EXTREMELY difficult working with such people because they dont have skins thick enough to take any criticisms, and rigid corrections. Very incorrigible and arrogant set of youths we are having around now. Na that director fit una. grin. You must all sit up and do the right thing! no chance for non-challance, unseriousness or laxities.

Then the alternative is to resign and setup his own clinic.....there are many doctors or health "practitioners" (that's what they call themselves when they are not actually doctors grin) waiting to take the BS he is complaining about...but i don't think a director will just start insulting you for nothing but when a student doctor comes late to work, or flip through tiktok at work, or sit around gisting amd chatting away or can't differentiate between a 5mm and 10mm cyringe or make proper diagnosis they need to be insulted with every insult imaginable because lives depends on what they do....the job is not for titles is to save life.

Every mistake can cost someone their life so they need such a director there and may God keep the hated director safe there.

Nope:
You are just like him. Or else, you would have advised him to:
1. Do his job well
2. Report to higher authorities if not treated right.

There are rules called the PSR in Nigeria.
The OP can’t report and get any action taken because he most probably knows that there’s nothing that the boss is doing wrong. They just don’t like him.

Well, i do not want to take side till i hear from the director first. Hearing from both parties is the way to go because all this Generation of zombies staff are something else.
