My father passed away and willed all his property to his grandchildren, noting to us, his children "A man passed away, and his will was read. He never willed any of his properties to his children, but to his grandchildren; to each of them, he had willed properties and huge wealth. Was he right or wrong to have done so?"

I thought grandchildren means the children of his children. The man has spent the most of his life's fortune raising yuu guys with his sweat and wealth. I think it's very thoughtful that he also willed it to his grandchildren, to olay a part in setting them up for financial freedom too. Or was this "question" brought up by one of the children who doesn't have a child? |

That's his wish for his property and it needs to be respected. He is a a wiseman. Even what Queen Elizabeth of England left behind is that her will should be read 75 years after her death. |

Grandchildren, no problem. Naa who they control the children? Naa who get the children? If you can't control your children or wives, then you have problem... serious one. |

While we respect his decision, it is a stupid decision. What of the grandchildren yet unborn? What if some of the children don't have grandchildren yet? Or some children not even married yet. It's nonsense. I come in peace. |

imsoftcash:That situation can be especially painful because it is not only about property—it can feel like your father deliberately bypassed his own children in favour of the grandchildren. If the question is “Was he morally right or wrong?”, I would separate it from the legal question. Morally, he was not automatically wrong A person who owns property generally has the right to decide what he wants his lifetime’s wealth to achieve after his death. He may have deliberately chosen to make his grandchildren financially secure rather than leave everything to his children. There are several possible reasons why a father might do this: - He may believe his children are already established and don't need the inheritance. - He may want to secure the future of his grandchildren. - He may have had concerns about how his children would manage the wealth. - He may want the wealth to remain within the family for another generation. - He may simply have had a personal reason that he never explained. So the fact that his children received nothing does not, by itself, make the decision morally wrong. But there is another side. If he knew his children had sacrificed for him, depended on him, or would be left struggling while grandchildren received enormous wealth, then many people would consider the decision unfair or hurtful, even if it was legally valid. Legally, however, the answer depends heavily on where he lived and what law governed the estate. Nigeria does not have one uniform inheritance regime. The applicable law can depend on the state, whether the deceased was subject to customary law or Islamic law, the type of property, and the circumstances of the marriage. For example, under the Lagos State Wills Law, a child or spouse who was completely excluded from a will can, in appropriate circumstances, apply to court where the will fails to make reasonable financial provision for them. And customary law can impose additional restrictions. In the famous Benin Igiogbe situation, for example, the Supreme Court held that certain customary inheritance rights could override what a person attempted to do in a will. So “Dad left everything to the grandchildren” does not automatically mean the will is either valid or invalid. But there is an important distinction If your question is really: “Does a father owe his children an inheritance simply because they are his children?” My answer would be not necessarily. An inheritance is not a salary that a child is automatically entitled to receive from a parent. A parent can have legitimate reasons for leaving wealth to grandchildren, charities, a spouse, or even someone unrelated to the family—subject to whatever legal restrictions apply. At the same time, being legally entitled to make a decision doesn't necessarily make the decision emotionally fair. A father can be within his legal rights and still make a decision that his children reasonably experience as deeply hurtful. |
