Brothers, What Will You Advise a Brother?

I'm currently confused about my relationship journey.

I haven't really been the type to consider a serious relationship for a while now. It's just been a couple of sex partners here and there. We do it safely and keep things on a superficial level.

Now, recently, there have been demands and questions here and there about starting a family, especially considering that my immediate junior brother is done having children. His lastborn will be three next month, while the lastborn of my family is also done having kids. Her firstborn is already 10 years old.

I seem to be the only odd one out in this regard, even though I'm arguably more financially settled than all of them. Not to brag, please; I'm just trying to paint a clearer picture of the situation.

I clocked 35 in May, and it was as if everyone in the universe agreed to centre their birthday wishes around God providing me with a wife and family. Ever since then, the reminders from my folks have been pretty loud, persistent, and disturbing.

For the first time in years, I decided to seek a proper relationship, unlike my usual superficial flings and sexcapades.

Come to think of it, I can barely go three days without proper sex. This detail should be useful later.

I met this very beautiful babe from my state. She's 27, a first-class graduate (I am too, actually), and I'm naturally attracted to every facet of intelligence, especially communicative and academic intelligence. She has both, and I'm superbly into her.

She can hold a very reasonable conversation without leaving you mentally exhausted. She's become an integral part of my life, and at this point, I think it's safe to say I'm deeply attracted to her and genuinely like her.

Worthy of note is the fact that I've enjoyed a very unusual level of peace with her over the past three months, which is absolutely unlike me.

I get correct anger ish, although I've learnt to manage it well. I'm not a violent person, but I pick offences easily, and most times, I walk away when provocations get too loud. More often than not, my walking away is goodbye. I'm so good at it.

But since meeting this babe, we've not had any ugly disagreements over these past few months. She's very calm, calculated, and receptive. These qualities have made me like her even more.

She has a reasonably good-paying job, but that's not even an issue. I earn well enough to cater for everything, but she's also financially independent. Gifting seems to be her thing, too, as she's spent quite a sum on gifts for me without expecting anything in return. I haven't even matched up to a quarter of what she's spent on gifting though.

For the first time in my life, I agreed to a no-sex-before-marriage relationship because she's a virgin.

I still dey run my games on a low, so this didn't really look like an ish.

Here lies the rub.

Just last week, she said she had a confession to make, and she opened up about being SS. Mind you, I'm AA, so, by the usual norms, this shouldn't be an issue.

But during one of our previous conversations, she had claimed to be AS and asked if I would be comfortable settling down with someone who was SS. I almost freaked out.

I'm sorry, but I've always wanted to have AA kids. With apologies to those affected, I've always believed that if I ever have children, I owe them the best possible chances at life, including heightened intelligence, beauty, and a sound genotype. I believe I have a reasonable degree of control over who complements my genes to bring these qualities to fruition.

I'm honestly very good-looking and intelligent, so why not get someone who possesses these qualities, too?

Call it insipid or vapid, but I could swear that life has already dealt some people heavy blows by limiting their options in their quest for a future partner. Unlike those of us with AA genotypes, who can consider partners across all the common genotypes without the same risk of having children with sickle cell disease, they don't always have that freedom. I wanted my kids to have that freedom and an avalanche of options, too.

So, when she asked me that question, I sincerely freaked out and couldn't hide my disdain.

This, in turn, stopped her from opening up until last week, when she could no longer hide it.

Funnily enough, I already like her to the point where I don't mind if she's SS, BB, or iPhone. undecided

But the fact that she lied is what actually turned out to be my ish. She's been a very straightforward person so far, and this particular issue has upset our fashioned norms.

I proposed that the no-sex-before-marriage agreement should be off if we were going to be together, and she agreed. But now, I'm beginning to think it might look as though I'm trying to take advantage of her at this point.

Brothers, what will you advise a brother?
Am I being unreasonable?
Considering the emotional supports people with SS need, how challenging can it be? What is the possibility that she lives long enough?

All insults, curses, and whatever are welcome.
T for grateful.
Marry her if you're ready to support her come rain or shine. Don't marry out of pity.

My cousin who is a sickler has been married for over 20 years with 2 children. Her husband is AA. They're both successful and they have a happy home. Over the years, her health improved due to better care and God's grace.

Good morning my brother..have read what you posted here..and I just want to ship in some advise.. please don't take it with a levity hand.

Go for medical checkup to know the validity of her genotype and blood group

After checkup, if truly she's SS, pray fervently on it for God confirmation.. whatever the situation you have in your marriage, God will see through..

Please don't have canal knowledge of her for now until you marry her..may God bless your way.

You already have your match in a future partner, you can't expect the package to come perfect, thank God you are AA, and from your explanation, this lady truly loves you.... and this is the most important. pls don't blackmail her emotionally, Go ahead and marry her, I don't see any issue here

I don't believe this write up how can you date a sicle cell carrier for 3 months and you won't know? even if it doesn't show in the persona physique there is no way he / she won't potray some symptoms even I that I am As genotype still gets exhausted easily when I run, suffers from insomnia and i am stressed because the sicle cell is receptive in my gene let alone a person who is a full carrier and the sicle cell is dominant!

Both As and SS may not suffer from malaria symptoms as they are both carriers of the sickle cell defective genes as the plasmodium that transmits the malaria parasite as the organism(plasmodium)can consume the sicle cell to deplete it both they get fatigued easily compared to AS genotype people.

Granted she may not suffer from crises for 3 months still you should be able to know my SS secondary school room mate did pant a lot after a a strenous work or exercise!

But if it's true marry her and just have 2 kids because her health won't even be able to withstand more than that o I don't think you can have ss kids 2 kids are enough in this tinubuconomy or what is nigerian men obsession with many kids?I insist on 2 kids because I could remember my family friend she is a sickle cell carrier during her 1st kid birth she almost went to meet her maker even as it was a ceasarian section she used to give birth now imagine if she was subjected to 2more of that?

EVEN AS SHE JS SS, TRUST ME SHE WILL BE MORE USEFUL AND PEACEFUL TO YOU THAN A DOZEN OF THOSE USELESS AA GIRLS ROAMING THE STREETS.

MARRIAGE WOULD HAVE BEEN MORE STRESSFUL IF ITS THE KID(S) THAT ARE SS. BUT SINCE ITS JUST HER, YOU CAN MANAGE IT WELL. PROTECT HER FROM MOSQUITOES AND LET HER EAT RIGHT I AM SPEAKING FROM EXPERIENCE.

DONT ALLOW ANYONE DERAIL YOU ,MANY OF THOSE GIRLS THAT ARE AA WILL IN DUMP GARBAGE INTO YOUR LIFE.

THANK ME LATER
Mosquitoes don't affect SS carriers only their crises they don't even experience malaria from mosquito bites their cells are sickle shaped so it can't be eaten by the malaria parasite only they suffer from oxygen depletion and shortage of blood because of lack of circulation as result of their earlier sickle red blood cell shape

I do not feel it's normalized that the non-virgin man can cheat while in a relationship with his virgin girlfriend. You men just like to eat your cake and have it at same time.

That is my own problem with the OP and I called him out for it. The dishonesty is nauseating.
The lady did a good thing. Meanwhile, OP's babe is willing to compromise. My own be say: the men who wish to date and marry virgins should play by the rules: remain celibate until marriage.

Why do you assume that female virgins seem okay with men cheating on them? Where is the statistics for this Gerrard? I know you to be smarter than this.
Well, an assumption. But if ladies go about breaking up any relationship or marriage simply because their men cheated, then divorce rates would soar higher than ever imagined. grin

Please marry her and thank me later. Amongst other qualities, she came to you armed with virginity and common sense. That's scarce in thos generation.
what if she is lying about her virginity too?if she could lie about a serious thing as a genotype she could also lie about her virginity I no dey hide my genotype even as I am as let alone an ss genotype
Re: A Brother Needs An Advice. by Abas01(m): 10:57am On Oct 19
I sense purity and sincerity in her even though she didn’t tell you she was ss from set go.. she most definitely didn’t want to loose you.. God has blessed you with a genotype that complements others so that shouldn’t be an issue.. then if I were you I would rather hurriedly get married to her and honor the no sex before marriage deal (as to sleeping with her as punishment for not being upfront with her genotype earlier).. this would make you a greater man!! My opinion

And if you aren’t still sure if you want to continue abeg send ME her contact.. I am AA too.. I love the fact that she couldn’t continue with the lie!! She was prepared to loose you rather than live a lie!!!

Keep your advice in Sambisa
It is possible female Sicle cell carriers mostly die during labour of giving birth my family friend an ss almost died while doing her 2nd birth(twins)even when it was through a ceasarian section and I know of an ss lady who died while giving birth to her first child she was even a medical doctor

It's funny how some people think life is a movie script where you can write every scene and event to happen how you want it. You see some declaring things ignorantly like they are God. Whenever I see such utterances or behavior, I just laugh cos I know such person haven't experienced life much to understand how life works.

If the Op's story is real, he must be very careful not to hurt that lady or mislead her or take advantage of her if not, I pity his future. I am a student of positive affirmation and applying the law and power of attraction in drawing the things we desire into our lives but still, I have realized that some things are beyond our control no matter how much we try. Some times, God intentionally send the things we ignorantly or arrogantly despise and belittle our way to teach us a lesson about life. Like I said, I grew up being a highly religious kid who feared sin, especially sexual sin based on my late mother's extreme indoctrination and repeated warnings about it, as a result of that, I grew up disliking girls ignorantly and seeing them as similar to evil lol.

Because of this, I avoided girls so much that it was so obvious to everyone that knew me even till university days. Based on this same reason and more, I unknowingly developed disdain for girl childs and always said I will never have a female child no matter what. Even after school and NYSC, I still harbored that desire not to have female child based on so many reasons but look at me today, I am a proud father of more than one beautiful and adorable female childs, that is how God and nature operate; most times to humble us and to teach us to be reasonably, to be empathetic to others and to follow life with love for all and open heart cool
Are you going to be in the marriage with him? same with all the other nairalanders prodding the op to marry her when the chips are down only him will paddle his canoe as a yoruba adage will say"ti o ba ko iwaju si e ki o ta ti o ba ko eyin si e ki o ta ti o ba ku iwo nikan ki o tu ero ara e pa' easier said than done apart from the financial aspect what about the psychological and emotional aspect?when it comes to this kind of issue love won't be enough!

I know of a couple in akure ondo state (a well to do) influential one both gave birth to 2 ss and 1 as has lost 2 of their kids the remaining one is an ss female she should be 41 now never married, don't think she has any kid.Since we have relocated from Akure the one their mother lost in 2021 isn't even ss she has 2 kids their only brother died when he was 7 years old,he was also ss their mom is in her post menopausal period(age)and I don't think their dad had more than a wife self!so how are they going to start all over?

despite how understanding, loving and financially buoyant they were yet they still lost 2 of their kids this op's fiancee may or may not even last 1 child birth yet you people are egging him on to undertake a life time of challenge (physical, financial and etc).

Yes, she did well.

I agree that men should remain celibate until marriage if they choose virgin partners instead of cheating on them.

First of all, your statistics of 50/50 survival is wrong. People with SS genotypes are not 'crisis' patients. The fact that her genotype is SS doesn't make her a plaque to be avoided. If he had the S trait, that would be understandable but his reasons are primarily self-centred. His assumption that he has significant role in what gene is passed on to his children is somewhat delusional. Life happens. Even when one has done everything possible, life happens. No one is asking him to marry her. If you read my comments, you'd see that I advised him to break up with her if he is bothered by her genotype. The 'what if' is because marriage should not be decided by flimsy excuses.
And yes, intelligence was one of the things he wanted to preserve for his children. He wrote it there.

olakan22:
but his reasons are primarily self-centred. His assumption that he has significant role in what gene is passed on to his children is somewhat delusional.
self centred ?? He clearly said he was hoping to give his kids a better fighting chance at life even in this area of not passing them the AS genotype that will make finding marriage parters difficult… because that will be the automatic outcome of all his kids if he marries the SS woman..
so please explain,,, how is a man thinking about the genotype of his own kids delusional and self-centred??

olakan22:
Life happens. Even when one has done everything possible, life happens. No one is asking him to marry her.
This is not life happens…life happens are the thing you ddnt see coming that eventually became you realitieszz

. He already knows the woman is SS… Thats full disclosure before entering the marriage…he will be dealing with her health crises as a SS genotype person and will be passing AS genotype to all his children…
theses are real issues,,,, but hey!! you want to make it look like they are not a big deal and also make the guy look bad for considering them…. Shame on you jooor.!!

olakan22:
If you read my comments, you'd see that I advised him to break up with her if he is bothered by her genotype. The 'what if' is because marriage should not be decided by flimsy excuses.
Ur comment was not an advice, it was a bunch of emotional blackmail with a “what if” to make him feel since disease can happen in the marriage, he should just kukuma throw caution in the wind

…… the fact is his concerns are not flimsy excuses…. and that what you are trying to paint it as… and thats why i comically asked if u were SS urself because u sound very biased ..

olakan22:
And yes, intelligence was one of the things he wanted to preserve for his children. He wrote it there.
he never attributed intelligence to genotype as u claimed in your previous comment .. please go read his comment again..

…. He mentioned intelligence separately and added that the girl checked that box as a first class graduate and is also impressive in other areas… he also mentioned that he was first class graduate too..

Oh.. so now u want to avoid SS kids because of their SS genotype and prone to health crises?? why are u now claiming in your first paragraph that the SS mother isnt a health crises patient to be avoided ?? U are just deceiving yourself…

self centred ?? He clearly said he was hoping to give his kids a better fighting chance at life even in this area of not passing them the AS genotype that will make finding marriage parters difficult… because that will be the automatic outcome of all his kids if he marries the SS woman..
so please explain,,, how is a man thinking about the genotype of his own kids delusional and self-centred??

This is not life happens…life happens are the thing you ddnt see coming that eventually became you realitieszz

. He already knows the woman is SS… Thats full disclosure before entering the marriage…he will be dealing with her health crises as a SS genotype person and will be passing AS genotype to all his children…
theses are real issues,,,, but hey!! you want to make it look like they are not a big deal and also make the guy look bad for considering them…. Shame on you jooor.!!

Ur comment was not an advice, it was a bunch of emotional blackmail with a “what if” to make him feel since disease can happen in the marriage, he should just kukuma throw caution in the wind

…… the fact is his concerns are not flimsy excuses…. and that what you are trying to paint it as… and thats why i comically asked if u were SS urself because u sound very biased ..

he never attributed intelligence to genotype as u claimed in your previous comment .. please go read his comment again..

…. He mentioned intelligence separately and added that the girl checked that box as a first class graduate and is also impressive in other areas… he also mentioned that he was first class graduate too..
