No. It was initially meant to be for 8 weeks but it was cut down to six weeks for us all. I guess that was from a different era and things have changed greatly over the years.

My experience of orientation camp was nothing like that at all. Come to think of it, we were literally pampered and coaxed to partake in the parades and drill exercises...and I mean really pampered for the entire eight weeks six weeks of camp.

I've got fond memories of my experiences there jare...but tell me something, how come you guys only got to spend 3 weeks there? Abi na new government rules / guidelines / policies on NYSC??

Wangu has finally decided to open up to me. I always knew there was something about that cold gaze the sargent gave to me.

After the morning fainting incidence, I had to probe for answers to some of the question bordering me. Sitting at the medical centre that morning, I asked her about her relationship with the sargent.

At first, she denied having anything serious to do with him. But after I reminded her of the incidence at the joint on sunday, and the report the sargent filed against we both, she decided to own up and tell me the truth.

"I wasn't thinking straight. But when you spoke to me on sunday about it, I saw the truth and decided to quit immediately," she continued.

"He called me to come to the military quarters that morning but I told him I was at the kitchen doing platoon work. He called again in the afternoon after lunch after you spoke to me. I didn't know what else to tell him. I was scared, I couldn't say I was at the kitchen again. So I told him that platoon 2 was doing camp cleanup, and that I was involved."

That was not anger! That was spiteful hatred laced with bitterness.

"Did you tell him you are quitting the affair?" I asked her.

"Not yet. But I will tell him later."

That was it! If she had not told him and is playing stupid hide and seek games with the sargent, then its more risky hanging out with her.

"I'm scared of what might happen if I tell him." She informed me.

That's her business! She's becoming a risk to me and the entire platoon. I was going to cut her off.

But how could I do that? She was my assistant, and we must work together for the good of the platoon.

I remembered agreeing to cut off Jane too because of her marriage. And now wangu, because of a married military man who she claims her association with her was a mistake.

"You spoke to me on sunday like you care," her voice brought me back.
"Do you really care? Right now I'm confused and don't even know what to do."

I looked at her and saw the passionate plea therein.

"I care about you like I told you yesterday. But look at the harm hanging out with you caused me and the entire platoon. . ."

There was no need arguing with her. She wasn't going to see it my way. So I will just go ahead and do the right thing.

Moreover, their credit facility was structured to benefit high borrowers, not small scale borrowers.

He went ahead about the government efforts to support small scale enterprises. I wondered if it was not the same government that levies small shops like the barber's shop with all manner of levies; tax, environmental due, property rate, business premises levy, business permit and so on. Most times, you even have to pay to erect a sign post. Then your shop requires electricity to run it, you will spend all your income on fuel to power you generator, and the affordability of the fuel is something the same government was working hard to reduce by increasing its price.

The man was totally yarning dust! So was other speakers during the lecture. It was a case of trying to sell one book or one certificate or the other.

I've heard enough bullshit for the day. I moved outside and sent Ms Enoh an sms informing her I was tired and leaving the lecture hall.

I didn't know where I was going to hide. I pretended I was going to pee, then from one hidden corner to another, I moved around until I found myself at the delta kitchen restaurant.

I moved inside and met the lady cook who was smiling at me during my rendezvous with oge came to me. She was suprised to see me at the kitchen.

"What are you doing here?" She asked as she hurriedly moved me away from the main kitchen, towards an extreme corner, away from prying eyes.

"I came to see you," I joked, but she rather took it seriously.

"You shouldn't have come now, maybe later."

She looked and sounded alarm that I began to wonder what wrong.

"There is a strong law against corpers staying at mami during lectures and parade," she informed me.
"They will seal our restaurant if you are seen here."

"Come with me." She said as she moved towards her room, where I and oge used as our hideout.

I followed suit and she ushered me into the room.

I lay on the bed for some minutes. It was soothing as all my aching muscles started relaxing. I was almost falling asleep when the cook re-entered. I noticed she has re packed her hair and made it look better, removed the apron she was wearing and even smelt nice; maybe she just wore some perfume.

We talked for some time. She was a lively chatter. She asked how I was fairing in camp and I told her about our punishment that morning. She laughed hysterically. I asked her about herseilf and she told me.

She was a student at the state university, but comes to camp to help her aunty whenever camp opens. She stays the entire 3 weeks, and when camp closes, she goes back to school and wait for the next batch.

She was easy going.
