lagbaja:

I got my weaners for N30k each after waiting for 3 months. They could not meet my total order because their grand parent breeding stock arrived earlier in the year and would take sometime for them to farrow enough.

nice one. learnt they are out of stock

Add baker's yeast to your feed in the portion of 3g for every 1kg and see the fantastic results. It improves growth rate by up to 30%. The baker's yeast helps break down the normally undigested cellulose and fibre in the feed. I have demonstrated it and it works. See research work here : http://www.lrrd.org/lrrd16/10/akin16082.htm

@ Lagbaja: 9ce.
But this research was on cassava based feed. Anything to suggest it will work for spent grain? I should think there's some residual yeast in spent grain from the brewing process.
Re: Pig Farmers Lets Meet Here by lagbaja(m): 7:27pm On Jul 31, 2014
Brewers spent grain does have fibre and cellulose. I believe the baker's yeast will work similarly, though I have not tried it. You can try it and give us a feedback. Here is a research material that captures it.

You can also have a look at the information below which I captured from feedipedia. http://www.feedipedia.org/node/74

Was discussing with a pig farmer recently and the issue of profitability, comparison and so on on the various pig farming businesses came up. He was of the opinion that fattening farms are more profitable than farrow to finish farms. Can we discuss this??

Fattening is very exciting especially when you buy growers and acquire in bulk...the shrewd business man will always find some desperate farmers willing to sell growers at a very cheap price. This usually happens when all the rooms are full and cash flow is tight. The cost of fattening a grower is very cheap compared to raising from weaner/breeding.

Going by the current price of weaners at N3500, and the time and space you save from not farrowing, Fattening is definitely more profitable than farrrowing. The biggest challenges to d practise are sourcing quality weaners in large quantity and bio-security concerns.

Hi Guys,

Sorry i have been off the trend lately.
let me quickly answer some of those who sent me personal messages

@ fayahsoul: No., A.I is diff, we inseminate them with semens, i will try and post some of the pictures of me in the process; you can also google it

@ Konnet: My farm is at Laduba ( towards Afon); am based in SA, but come to the farm monthly, i will be in 9ja in 3weeks, will prefer you come then, e-mail: deji@fulfillsa.co.za

Read a post on adding yeast to feed, i think i will try it; i have also been experimenting some thing of late, and it seems to be working fine, i have introduced Rice husk ( some feedmill will call it rice bran, but it is husk most times) as 25% of my feed, rice husk at some feedmills in ilorin is N10-N13; i discovered a place, where it is free of charge in Lafiagi, i have used it to as a to lower my cost for my sow and finishers;

My view on buying weaners and fattening: if you do the maths, it is very profitable, because if you can get weaners like u said for N3,500; but i have a diff. view, if you get your sow management right, and you are able to ensure all process is followed, then breeding is more profitable, because you should be able to atleast wean 23 piglets from a sow each year.

Guys,

Can we start a young pig farmers club? I think most of here are young , i think with the club we can achieve alot, the market is huge, i think together we can do more, we can create biggier market, we can expand the market,;few people in nigeria, still see pork has a fatten/ unhealthy meat, they dont know that pork is white meat, healthier than beef or goat meat.
Also, We can collectively look into processing, i think that is the future, at the moment, we still have imported pork coming into Nigeria, because few farms process.We can conveniently sell our pork for twice or thrice what we sell for at the moment, if we process them;
With the club/association, we can have some who specialise in breeding, some in fattening, some can go into A.I, we can negotiate feed prices better, cut out the middle men, who get brewery waste, and sell it to us at high prices, we can go straight to the company, and get it off them in bulk and distribute it.

Just my thought, i dont know if something like that has failed before, if anyone also feels this might not work, i will like to know

Yea I think a pig farmers club will be fun we can share ideas and experience.I am an aspiring pig farmer with little or no experience .what ever I knw about pig farming is from this thread and the internet.@ dejia,lagbaja , femu and others let work together to get this off the drawing board I am involve in an agric cooperative in Ogun state and some other nairalanders here so I can. Contribute some small experience from d cooperative.I believe strength is in numbers if we all have a common goal or interest.

My contribution.

good day house.
thanks to all contributors.
Am based in Benue. I would like to establish a big farm here. I think I will start with weaners, then use the time to gain valuable experience.
I have a few thoughts and questions.
Where can I get quality weaners, my destination been Makurdi.
Weaners to be sold out will be mostly male... at what time can I still castrate to get better fattened sizes?
Am hoping to learn from Deji how to AI which will be a better option when I move to that level.
Also, do foreign breeds do well here? How can one get them?
your options for feeding has been excellent. they are all available here. I would also like to visit any of the ogas in the house to learn for some time before starting mine.
Lastly, building design best for 100 weaners and 30 sows.
Thanking you for your patience with learners like moi

Honest responses needed, pls how long does it that your pigs to attain 80kg live weight? Is there anyone here that has attained 80kg in 6 months? If yes was spent grain included in your formular.

it is possible depending on breed and feeding.

[quote

Reasons:
1.If you want to introduce superior genetic traits not present in your herd (heterosis) but is present in the Boar from which the se.men is gotten. Instead of buying a Boar that is pretty expensive, u can simply settle for its se.men that is much cheaper.

2. Sometimes, the Boar is much bigger or much smaller than d Gilt or Sow and mating could be challenging

3. You can also introduce AI In order to avoid inbreeding,

HI All,

I have about 60 weaners, am offloading into the market; they will be weaned in a next week or in fornight.

There weight ranges will range from 7kg-12kg; they will be between 28-40days old ( by the next week and the week after)

There are all products of A.I ; from PIC 433; from Kanhym , SA.

We sell weaners at N700 per kg; I will recommend them as breeders stock, for anyone who intend to breed them

The farm is in ilorin, we are about 30mins from Ogbomosho,Oyo state

We can arrange delivery at a cost.

Call Farm Supervisor Ms Paulina 07019320034; to view;
or e-mail me: deji@fulfillsa.co.za

I have attached 2 pictures of some of them at this stage ( they are about 5kg at this stage)

http://olumo./ I think we can learn a thing or from these guys in Ghana. Our independent attitude as farmers is what makes us suffer in the hands of brokers and middlemen/women. They dictate prices they buy pigs and we are usually helpless becos we need the cash. For instance when I was starting out last June I bought my weaners @ 4000 naira each and when I approached the same guy with my own weaners which in my opinion are bigger than the ones I got from him he said he would buy for 3000 naira and I told him I do not have such weaners for sale that mine are N4500 each fortunately I am not too desperate I have unoccupied rooms and cash. Once they reach grower stage no more sales be that. We should learn how to schedule our outputs so as not to sell in desperation. We need like minded people to come together with a purposeful vision to take pig farming to great heights in our dear country.

Hi oga, can you give a sincere appraisal in terms of litter size and weight at 8 and 16 weeks of the offsprings of the Obasanjo sows you bought?
What is the average weight of the sows now?
