Hey Guys,

I am 25years Old and single. I just started work about a year ago and I think its about time I got my first automobile. I thought I saved enough for a mazda 6 or Toyota corrolla but I was shocked to find out that both cars cost above a million naira. My budget cant cover this so recently, I started thinking of going for a power bike instead.

I work on the island and live on the mainland. My job also requires me to wear a suit and tie. Although my company policy doesnt refrain me from getting a power bike, colleagues have argued that it looks unprofessional. I am not a marketer. I dont go out to meet clients and even if I do, we have staff cars I can use as nobody uses their personal automobile for office runz. I would simply ride it to work and back as well as weekends (although wearing a suit and helmet). I also think it would be the safest bet to beat the 3rd mainland trafic daily.

The VW Golf is a small and feminine car and I really havent seen myself riding it. I was advised by colleagues to get one since it is cheap and within my budget. That I can give it to my wife/fiancee/girlfriend when I buy a bigger car. I really want the power bike the more I reasearch into it though.

I need advice on which one to go for. Cost of maintainance, which one girls dig, suitability, durability, second hand value etc should all be taken into consideration.

Thanks.

From experience with bikes its not worth it get your self 4 wheels, and a good clean well maintained bike is not as cheap as you think, apart from the fact that a crazy road user on 3rd mainland bridge could ram into you and you find your self swimming in the ocean they don't have very good 2nd hand value. And not very easy to sell.

Imagine ur self in a suit on a monday morning and then ur on ur bike looking all cool and then it starts to rain the better one that causes flood, you would get to the office looking terrible man. I'm not a golf fan, but I'm sure you could get a well maintained small car to suit your budget.

Are you comparing Four Wheels and a Roof
with
Two Wheels with your leg as a stand at the traffic light?

Have you rode a bike in pouring rain before?

Did you mention which one girls dig?
I 'll tell ya
Its the one with proper seats, six-speaker Sound System and an Air-conditioner.

With your budget I would advise a Golf 4, I see a bike as a recreational toy and for daily use. You need a car first before thinking of a bike or you can get a good naija used corolla.

Personally I think you'll be making grave mistake if you buy a motorcycle out of economic desperation.

I am a die hard biker and even some days/weeks I find myself not touching my bike and driving instead. If you're not 125% together and you get on a bike then disaster awaits.

Find yourself a VW Golf in good condition. There's no such thing as a feminine car.

Take a look at Mazda3 it is a good first car although dealer ones are very similar to ford focus.

Another option is the Mitsubishi Galant if in the market for a cheaper midsize

With the new policy used cars will get a lot more expensive your option is to get the non existing N1.5m made in naija new car

OP asks the one girls dig, it shows I can't advise him!
Re: Suzuki VS VW Golf 3 by gogodaye(m): 12:03pm On Jul 04, 2014
@ OP..........I'll suggest you opt for a Volkswagen Vento Saloon car....The models span from 1994~1998.
Its a sturdy car, a sure low budget car on maintenace and its' got fuel economy on its side.
I must add its got a masculine touch to it.
I never would go for a power bike.....

Appreciate all the advice. Is there any good car one can get under a million naira (including registration, duties and all). A friend said I should spend a day shopping at Berger (Apapa).

It depends on what you want. If you want tokunbo, yes its possible. Registration and plate number purchase shouldn't take more than 50k. However, you can also check sites like cheki for cheap well maintained nigerian used cars. i once saw a renault megane with mileage as low as 40k kilometers for sale at N600k. I will advice you to be patient and take your time to browse thru ur options. Do not worry about cars that chicks will dig. They won't share the maintenance bills with you.

Yimu all around.
The real question here is what do you want? Your own personal preference. After that, take a look at your budget and then decide.
I'm a serious biker with a very professional organization, I need to do suits, ties and the whole 9 yards at work. You won't be riding to work in your suit bro. You ride in your proper riding gear, have a change of clothes in your backpack or bike-luggage and change at the office. Been doing this for over 3 years now cheesy
Trust me, the chics dig the bikes over cars.
That said, riding is expensive. The bikes are expensive, riding gear is expensive, parts are expensive. The rainy season is though on bikers, but as we say, if you don't ride in the rain, you don't ride.

P.S: I also own an SUV and drove to work today instead of riding (rain been dey fall) :p

wish i could also do this. i have an suv which i drive to work daily but traffic in lagos is a killer. i spend 6-8hrs daily in traffic. leave early get home late. thought of getting a power bike to commute to work and back and drive my car weekends. Other option is get a flat close to the office which would cost me around #1m. wondering which one to go for.
