'NZERIBE'- most Igbos don't know the full pronunciation which is 'zebelu ndi ikwu n'ibe'. I think the full meaning in English relates to this; 'be careful of friends and some relations'
I stand to be corrected thou.

Another is 'ZIKORA',full pronunciation is 'k'anyi ziko ora na chi anyi di nma' which means let's show the world that our God is good'.

Naaa it means 'There is God'.
God Lives is -Chidindu.
Chidi can also mean 'there is God' but the full name Chidiebele means God is merciful.

@ Arysexy, I think Imo has the highest number of men bearing female names. I met a cashier bearing Chidinma!my name sake!!, I so laughed at him that he was embarrased and I had to apologise.
Also my family friends from mbaise,Chioma and Chinyere. Both male and twins.
But its not an abuse like you termed it because their meaning all give glory to God.

POTUT:

In my opinion, Chijioke actually means God holds (is the custodian of) creation ("oke" being shortened from "okike", meaning creation).

"Oke" also means share, but in the context of name Chijioke, I believe it means creation. Otherwise, what share of what does God own?

Please throw more light if you have a better explanation.

The name is actually deeper in meaning than it appears on the surface level. Igbo people believe that God is the holder and sharer of talents which all proceed from God. And they also believe that God gives everyone his own share of talents in life that that individual needs to succeed in life. No two persons have exactly the same talents or I would say in exactly the same proportions. You might be excellent at public speaking while I suck at it but excel instead at drawing and painting. These are two God-given talents and you and I would believe that these are actually our individual share of talents from God the father.

Literally, it means 'God holds the share' but deeper it actually means God-given talents.

thunder74: Most of the names has "Chukwu" or Chi" before or after.

It goes to explain to you the importance and significance of 'chi' in Igbo mythology. Before the introduction of christianity, Igbo people believed every person had a guardian spirit or chi that followed every individual around and helping that individual on his spiritual journey on earth. The concept of chi was so important that it reflected greatly in the names of Igbo people. After the introduction of christianity, the concept of 'chi' was modified to refer to God almighty(chi ukwu = Chukwu).

Chukwudi doesn't mean "There is God". Rather it means "Diaris God oh"

What are you people even talking about? Chijioke simply means God the custodian of all shares/benefits.

We give this name to the male child to highlight the importance attached to a male child, which translates to "God has given me my own share".

So all these talent stuffs you are saying are just secondary

Hmm im still confused, cos in igbo onome means- I was there when it happened
are you saying that the bracketed (O)nome in igbo means 'I' instead of He/She? I was there when it happened, in Igbo means ANOM OMEE. He/She was there when it happened means ONO OMEE, which is the one you are mistaken for ONOME. Get it right dear, if you want adopt it as an igbo name, it would be ONOMEE. But does that really make any meaning to you as an igbo name?

Onwanlen: I have a lot if Ibo pals and I love them die. Great minded peeps. But I also find that the Ibo own the below listed names. If anyone can help with the meaning.

1. Calistus

2. Vitus

3. Paulinus

4. Cyracus

5. Ignatus
These names you mentioned are Roman names that we Igbo Catholics bear in commemoration of the saints who had them and for us to emulate their godly and righteous lives, just like mine; Modestus.

That will change from my own offsprings as they will bear only Igbo names with deep Godly meaning. Igbos have been known since ages as godly people and so refusing to take a whiteman's name won't rob us of our godliness unless a whiteman takes the name iwene Tansi (Iwegbune Tabansi) who is also a Catholic blessed and prospective saint

You don't understand me dear. I asked if 'i was there when it happened' makes any meaning to you as a name? Did the Child partake in his/her formation or delivery? Who is actually the one present at whatever it is that happened? The Child, the mother, the father or God? If it is any of those except the child, why using the 'I' and making the child a partaker? It doesn't make sense to me especially on what it is that happened that that is begging for a witness. You can throw more light please
