This is a nice thread I just ran into. I'm considering studying Mud Engineering in PTI. Although my background is not engineering but sciences, Maths to be precise, what are my chances of landing a good job ?

Hello house. I recently got an admission to study subsea engineering at Cranfield University. Having studied electrical and electronics engineering in my first degree without good grades I believe I can graduate with good grades too from the msc.

The real reason,I am here is for to ask one simple question,is spending 6million at Cranfield University a justified investment? What's the salary range for a subsea engineer? I currently have two years
work experience in the manufacturing industry, will it hamper my chances after the msc to secure a job that will help me offset some of the debts that will result from this advanced degree?

Bro, I would advise you to think about this critically. Subsea Engineering is the bomb now, no doubt about that, now that drilling activities are taking place in water depths exceeding 2000 m. However, the prospect of gaining employment as a graduate subsea engineer is very low, except you are connected. If you really are, you can go for it, else I would advise you to think it through, it might not worth it.

. I am always of the believe that There is really no limit to what you can achieve as long as u set ur heart to it. For me, I still insist you go for it. Think inwardly if you can persevere, Job search isn't the easiest of things this days, but I can assure you that with subsea, you stand a very good chance of getting opportunities both locally & internationally. The choice is Yours!!!

I have been to land rig, semi-submersible rig and a drill ship during the course of my career.

My first challenge ever was casing design for an HTHP, sour gas and multilateral wells in the desert of saudi arabia. Getting the casing strings and liners that meet the expected burst, colapse and tensile load ( and still within AFE ) was tough.

I am currently engaged in well planning and design phase for for deepwater ( 3500 ft - 5500ft of water ) project offshore Nigeria.

There are so many ways of getting into the field. I will explain one of the ways to you. You can come into the industry as a drilling fluids engineer ( Mud Engineer ). There is a drilling fluids school in PortHarcourt/Enugu. You will attend the school for a month thereabout after which you will be given a certificate to work as a Mud Engineer. Indigenous drilling fluids company occasionally employ graduates from the school. Otherwise, after acquiring the skill, you can apply to any drilling fluids company in Nigeria ( MISWACO, Baroid, Cledop, Atlantic fluids, baker, star AP etc ). The acquired drilling fluids skill together with your petroleum engineering training will you in a vantage position. I will find out the contact address of the school and get back to you.

A classmate of mine whom did his internship in Germany (dresdern) precisely is of the opinion that its better to study Msc PEE in Norway than to do it in Germany because Norway has much more oil reserves than Germany and it will be relatively easier to secure a job after studies in Norway than in Germany.
2. Like the poster who I also quoted asked you.. How did you get the €8000 to survive during your second year? Working while schooling? Internship? Please I'd love to know cos frankly my parents would not be able to afford sending me such money again... They would instead want me to be doing the sending lol... And I don't know if that my friend who did his IT in Germany is correct... He said during your second year you are required to do paid internships form which you can take care of your second year expenses... Pleas how true is this (moreover I looked up TUC's internships website and M.SC PEE was not among the listed departments who normally do internships)
3. Then lastly I have a question for you concerning Norway.. In Norway like Germany, you are also required to pay a certain some of money into foreign account per year.. So my question is for the second year how again can one get the money by himself overthere? (working? Internships?)

I may not be able to give a precise answer on this but I will try to be as objective as I can. Your friend is right with regards to the current state of oil and gas reserve in Germany - it is practically dwindling. You do stand a chance of securing a job after graduation from both schools; however, with UniStavanger, I think you might get more job opportunities.

I got a student job for the 1st semester (I worked in the Department). For the rest of the semesters, the doe I made from my internship was sufficient to keep me afloat. Let me stress one fact. Getting an internship could be challenging here as well. In my class, only about 46% of us got internships. In addition, getting an internship is NOT a prerequisite to passing the Masters Programme. Some students complete the programme without securing one.

Hmm... This is a tough question. I am certain that students of UniStavanger are given the chance to take internships if they are able to secure one. Promising students who are unable to get internships are usually offered a student job at the Department. The professors secure their services for Scientific article writing, proof-reading, programming, experimental or simulation work, research among others. Others get any student job available e.g. Working in an automobile industry, waiters in restaurants and other menial jobs.

The decision is yours to make.

Well, it is quite possible, but on the long-term, it might adversely affect your scholarly performance. Since you would need to work more hours than required over the course of the semester break, you might have to forfeit several classes. An internship or some sort of home scholarship would be a better option to relying solely on menial jobs. Your folks will have to help you out in such scenario.

1.the duration for the training is 10 days (classroom training and practical rig experience) Will this be ample time to get all the required knowledge one needs?
2.should I go ahead and apply for PGD program in petroleum engineering and later on go on to MSc in a university

3.How well recognized is the Institute of petroleum and drilling engineering IDPE in the the oil sector in Nigeria it seems new.

the certificates that will be offered after the training are 1. IADC, Assistant Driller Certificate under IADC Drilling Industry Training Certificate (DIT)
2. IADC HSE Rigpass Certificate
3. IADC Well Control Certificate, Mandatory for every drilling personnel coming on board a rig.
4. Man- management and Rig management certificate.
5. Rig inspection Certificate.
6. Practical Rig exposure Certificate
