Today, Friday October 3, 2014, Ms. Damilare Babajide, a 400 level Student of Faculty of Law at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) was rewarded with a new car alongside other unannounced sumptuous perks as the winner of the 2014 Miss UNILAG pageant.

The reward for the beauty pageant was far cry from the reward given to the winner of the university debate competition last month.

On September 10, Olaitan Zainab, a 200 level student of Political Science who emerged from a rigorous academic debate competition was handed a sum of N100,000 with a laptop computer.

Reacting to the disparity of gifts made to winners of both the debate competition and beauty pageant, some students on the campus said the measly gifts to winners of academic competitions compared to the sumptuous packages to winners of beauty pageants will definitely affect the morale of students in the course of their studies.

I think those companies who sponsored the beauty pageant assisted with more money compare to that of the debate...
You know,most Nigerian companies esp telecomm. Companies will prefer to be a sponsor of a beauty contest than an academic debate.

She may not be to everyone's taste but that is a beautiful girl shown below. It shows how unbridled hate has eaten into the mentality of some to the extent negative comments the entire world can discern to be borne of bad belle is all they have to contribute once it is a Yoruba person praised for one thing or the other. If any of you have a sister, girlfriend or wife as pretty as the lady shown below then kindly show us their picture let us appraise it. An academic environment should reward academic excellence more than beauty whatever. Corporate institutions sponsoring all these need to define their priorities. However, the benefit of N100k and fulfilment from the academic debate is worth more than enough from the SUV if I'm to quantify it.

I'm yet to see the value political science adds to society. If anyone wants to study Pol science why not push a little harder and go for Law. It seems Nigeria is currently awash with empty degrees that are worthless both for the society and the individual.

Pol Science is not useless, it empowers one and equip one to pursue a career in either law, journalism, business, int'l relations and diplomacy, public service(working with political party), political analyst, psychology, academic etc. It is a valuable degree but in Nigeria we don't think.
