Hi,

A relation of mine is interested in starting this watermelon business.

But the problem is getting the land to farm.

You all know the cost implication of getting land in Nigeria is very high

And this business would need up to a hectare of land or what?

Please reply.

On Saturday, Day 28:
I will advise anyone going into WMelon planting to take spraying of pesticide very seriously especially @ early stage.

These will be transplanted by this weekend. By then, they would have developed secondary leaves. These are the Kaolack variety seedlings, 7day old.
I adopted this method (transplanting ) in order to beat the planting time expiration, though this weather/rain is becoming unpredictable.

Welcome back Mangam!

Sorry for the loss. All is well. Kudos to you for creating an educative thread like this in the first place. Your fellow melon farmers can help tell what went wrong.

Happy Sunday.

Eeyah, sorry MAGNAM. This attack looks like a fungi related type. Z-force spraying would have addressed it. Then, pls try a disease(anthracnose) resistant variety so as to avoid labour loss. Lastly, your soil, I hope it's well drained. I wish you all the best. You must bounce back pls. However, I will continue to update your thread, it will not die.

That will be the best in order to prevent flower shedding and premature fall off.

Funny guy.
I mean you need sandy loamy soil that does not retain water. Clay soil retains water and it harbours /hosts insects e.g termites, so it's not good.
Anthracnose is a major disease of water melon, but there are some disease resistant seeds that are been sold in some agric shops.
Look through this thread for contact of seed seller already given several times. Hope my grammar is not big again...... lol.

Its best you grow crops with certified seeds that are resistant to common diseases, not just water melon but other seed propagated crops

One funny thing about farming, what we plant grows daily and mature to harvest,.and our care determines the harvest. But if you don't plant today, what do we care for, and what do we harvest later? ....This is the reason for the bushes around your houses and along our express roads. Oil price is falling, agriculture is the way out. How was your night?

Water melon=Ogbanje plant? Haba!!!..... lol.
Just take your time and give it TLC. That's not a chemical, it's Tender Loving Care. This should start right from seed selection stage.
