Also an engineer but i must tell you, that car look odd and not impressive.
they chose to build a car, why cant they do normal body finishing.
it is a no no for me......
For God sake they are University student and definitely not Level 1 or 2

Oho!!! Now, you're making reference to these countries. Nigerians and hypocrisy. These same set of people will rant China made/India made and will state how it is not on par with Western nations yet when it comes to what a Nigerian has made, the technologies they so condemn automatically becomes adorable. They forget that despite the low quality work done by these people, they were encouraged which made them what/where they are presently and turned into nations where different firms outsource their various productions.
There really is an inherent problem with us. For students with that budget (#400, 000), they tried taking into consideration the negative factors that abound here in this country. But as the usual crowd mentality that we all have, we condemn, they never bothered reading the article to see that it was #.4 million yet they come here to criticise and say how they can couple sheets of metals together and voila! the car is made. Tomorrow, they'll say Nigerian students are not creative enough, they don't read anymore when they can't see a simple figure up in the above article about these young undergraduates. We should keep wallowing in our hypocrisy.

I'm sure when we hear and see what team Uniben did in South Africa recently, we'd still condemn.

You guys don't just get it. No one does things like this anywhere in the world, it doesn't just make sense. I am not comparing Nigeria with those countries as we don't even know what we are doing (Just like these guys, you and many others on this thread), our education system is still lost in the 60's. Let me give you an example of what I mean in simple term; take for example, because your parents didn't buy you a shoe when you were 3 years old won't make you as a 20 year old kid to go and buy a shoe meant for a 3 year old kid so as to cover lost ground. Actually you can buy it but to sane people like me it will look stupid, that's exactly what these guys are doing. India's Minister of Science and Technology recently said they lost in the semi-conductors revolution when countries like Taiwan, Singapore, China, etc were keying into this revolution, but they can't afford to lose out in the nano-technology revolution going on presently. They are spending billions of dollars in research not into semi-conductors but into nano-materials and nano-technology cause they are not looking backwards but into the future and in the next 10-20 years we will see the result in their Health care, IT, manufacturing, etc. We need to join the world in the race and help develop what is going on at the present, there are many ways in which we can do this but surely not in assembling this.

there is room for improvement

They should improve on their skills and produce something better,

With the support of the government/society they will do better.

what these guys did is commendable, but the most commendable thing is the contribution of their department by funding the project to the tune of 4million.The truth is that the only difference between the west and others is the amount of money they spend in sponsoring research and projects such as these .With this new attitude, there is no doubt that Nigeria will move forward, and our youth will be encouraged to do even greater and novel works

Good engineering is economically feasible and useful.
Instead of creating this prototype, they could have looked towards the direction of fabricating sellable vehicle parts e.g carburetors, exhaust pipes. Doing this, they will make cool cash.
Building a full vehicle like this is inefficient and infeasible.

great criticism , it is the corupt part of projects that kills the ideas and knowledge behind it .....this is what we need to fight not the ideas and skills.

anybody can do it , how many are doing it .....which have you done in your line of expertise ? actions speaks louder than work ...if the japense were criticised for making those small adding machines am sure they would never have made the scientific . well you are only thinking lame about no one wanting to invest in them ... the truth is they stood out from their peers in a little way.

The bold was an invention, please tell me one thing new about what this guys did. I am not criticizing these guys but their Professor who made them do things like this. What they did cannot be published in any International journal with more than 1-impact factor if it will be taken in any journal at all (except maybe the like of our naija kangaroo local journals). I am very sure these students will bear the cost of buying all this fairly used parts. It is ridiculous.

Let me answer your question now, as kids we built things like these with empty cans and woods, the difference between this and ours is that we didn't have money to buy a fairly used engine.

Why do we continue to celebrate inadequacies in Nigeria?

This is a piece of shyte and primary school students should be ashamed.

But I don't blame this mor0ns though, when their Vice Chancellor is too busy parading alleged rapists around the campus and leading jungle justice cowboys.

am very sure , you are not in the engineering line . you built when you were young with cans , whats the science behind the motion ? have you bothered to ask the science behind the motion of that project ... bro , the japenese or chinese never invented the adding machine , they only built on already known technology in their own way. the iron and other equipments are not their inventions . you should check on the science used .pls , if we envisage development , we should not talk down something which is worth it . like I said , you should drop a link to one of your international works.

Nigerians, stop feeling sympathy for your predicament, strive to break beyond your current barrier. This project would have been more welcomed both home and abroad if the guys had put in more efforts to create something out of the ordinary. But look, take a closer look, they created something we all were expecting. I'm sure most of us here would do better if given the opportunity. If this project work was sent to represent nigeria among the japanese, Germans, etc. I'm sure not only me, but you will be embarrassed and humiliated as well.

I'm not here to debate with you but to offer my individual opinion.

Offers yours and shove off. You're part of the problem why we are stuck in the stone ages in Nigeria.
