Op, I think your shyness and related self-esteem issues stem from your strictly religious upbringing. Nice goal, wrong motive. Being able to talk to guys shouldn't be the sole reason for wanting to get your shyness under control.

Em... I THINK it's like this... Growing up, you didn't associate much with any guy you do not call 'brother'. Now you are not sure how to relate with them, and feel the girls who can have a secret recipe. Well if they do, it would be that they don't see every other girl as better than they are. That's what you should change.

Start by discovering your strengths, those things you excel at, including your talents. Improve on them. Try to acquire new skills. The more you do those, the more your self-worth increases. Everything else would fall in place afterwards.

NB: try not to fall headlong for the first guy who showers you with seemingly 'undeserved' attention or who proclaims undying love for you. Head injuries can be really bad.
