Please my people of nairaland, I need your advice on what step to take on this situation.

Please no insults, I just need an advice.
I am an engineer by profession, I worked as a consultant in a company some years back until I got this present job. Truth be told I was happy when I was called for an interview in a much bigger company where I presumed I will make a career. First I remember I submitted my CV to a friend who promised to hook me up with a better job, and sometime this year he called to advice I study for a test but refused to tell me the company n type of test I should prepare for. To cut off the long story, sometime last month, I was called in for an interview for the proposed job, I was elated and took an undermined risk of travelling for the interview. On reaching the office the next day, I was impressed at the company and the level of organisation in the company. I was interviewed, I performed and I was told that I will be briefed when I resume. Waow I already got the job which was what I told myself because of the way I saw how impressed the interviewers looked. Finally I got the job with an offer of below a hundred and forty thousand as gross salary, I later realized that I was employed as an office assistant, me an engineer a formal manager and to grease the elbow, it was stated in my offer letter and I was to serve a dozen of young engineers in my office. I resumed with total equality but realised that I was way below the food chain and the young stars didn't waste time to clear me on that. One of them yesterday even told me I would help him make some deposit at d bank and all that, and even went on to say that it was part of my job description. Now I know I don't have to envy which is non of my business, it's already 14 days into the job and I feel my dignity has been tramped and I may not have a quick rise here. Let me halt here but will share more ordeal I have passed through in this few days if you care.

Please I just need to know what you people think and what you have to advice either for me to get out of this situation or another.

So sorry.I can imagine how u r feelin now.had a similar experiense yesterday when a company I applied to as an admin manager only informed me at d last stage of d interview dat there's no position for such(but they advertised for it) rather I will be employed as a sales person.I really felt bad havin my hopes dashed at d last minutebut if u quit dis ur present job now,is d former job still available for u.if no,then I suggest u exercise patience n continuw wit dis present job instead of stayin jobless while u start searching for better job.but incase of next time, its advisable u find out every deatail about a job before takin it up talkless of droping a job u were enjoyin for sometin u weren't sure of.anyway I believe u've learnt ur lesson cos experience is d best teacher.wish u d best in future

In fact, that was my mistake. I signed it thinking that it was not the discovered job because the name was changed and they lied to me that I will work with the team n the job is strictly for engineers. Only for me to discover that I am the only person holding that position, in fact the previous holder resigned and wasn't an engineer. I also found out along the line that the position was never for engineers which I was informed by one of the reasonable engineer I serve in the office.

I think the needed an engineer or a science person n this time a graduate so that the person can easily flow with their pace.

Thanks friend, you see that's not fair, why will they change a name of a position just to get the best out of it. For instance I was given Technical support coordinator and was not briefed of doing this, I was even asked if I can drive and from my investigation carried out previously I was told the moment they employ an engineer they buy the person a new car. Actually it is true, the engineers all drive brand new cars depending on the year u were employed, u get the model for that year. That's not my business, though in my former job, I was given a car, house n official driver but they had inconsistencies in paying because its an indigenous company so it is not a new thing but the fact that they even noted it on my appointment letter and the manager of my department told me that my job doesn't require it is really discouraging. I believe God sha.

Money first. Career satisfaction next or vice versa depending on which you made your priority. It's never too late to make amends.

That's what we have in a lawless country, the country is so inundated with lawlessness that individuals, private companies can do whatever they like. My brother the best advice I could give you is to do whatever duties you are assigned to diligently and look forward to better offer that's right for your candidature.

Very unfortunate situation for you. I can understand how you feel. You need to be calm while searching for the best solution. It is important I let you understand that many people are not happy with their current jobs or role profile. However, a job brings food to your table and enables you leave your house every morning. That way, you avoid home boredom & financial struggle.

You can make enquiry at your previous company to see if you could go back to the role you left. Where this is not possible, stay put in the current job while looking for new jobs. One reality you must acknowledge is that there are so many graduates driving taxis & all forms of menial work just to put food on the table yet so many others are searching for such opportunities.

For me, I think you should move away from ego, pride & the euphoria of being an engineer to face the reality of our time. Continue in your current role, if you are very good at what you are doing, in time, you will be assigned a much dignified role and responsibility. What is more important is the added value you are bringing to the organization rather than your course of study. By the time they realize how good you are at what you do and that you are almost indispensable as the case may be, they will promote you ahead of some of your current colleagues.

Do not be discouraged, find ways to develop yourself and move on.

@dvdon, ur story really cracked me up. keep d job, be nice but don't get pushed around n get close to d big guys there. U can even get close to a few sensible ones amongst them, n try to know what they know.

Some of those engineers will leave 4 new places, sm will go 4 masters, sm might be transfered, sm might be promoted in addition to d fact that their will always b a yearly entry level recruitment. one way or another, there will always be a befitting opening and d friends u already hv, coupled wit ur cert n experience will definitely get u d job.

In case ur former company needs another guy or any other opening, I no go reject efen graduate internship. Baba, I full grand o, pm me ur email make I drop my Cv na.

Perhaps you didn't take time to read the job description well enough. In a work place where man no man is the criteria for having a chance for an interview, you could find yourself in any situation as the same leg that brought you in may also be applicable in position, some people could be place ahead of you not because they are more qualify but because of through who they were employed. You are there already. You will have to settle down, take your time to study the environment, the opportunities until another better offer comes up, that's if you still want to exit. Surprisingly you may discover you are spending more and in the real sense of it, your salary is not actually better Than where you left. If there are opportunities where you now however, you will do yourself a lot of good to ignore the distractions and aclamatise

Here i am frustrated that as an engineer i am still at home watching BBA hotshots without even securing a teaching offer...in lagos
infact i resolved to even volunteer for free only if i can leave my house and gain some experience in the oil and gas industry which is the course i studied

And i read this and for a moment i paused to ask myself if i really want this kind of offer.
To be candid with you dear,i do not compromise my happiness in anything i do.
The reason is because over time an unhappy, unfulfilled heart will degenerate to depression and that will be catastrophic both to yourself and to those around you.

My views may not be the best, as i write i dont even have 1k in my account but i will tell you this, dont remain in any firm where you are abused in the name of job offer.
Money isnt what you should pursue, self development and self improvement should rank topmost.

It maybe crazy but until you step out you wont get a better offer.

Another route to this is to build relationship with some of the staff and seek avenue to be promoted to your desired department.
This second option will mean that you'll have to forget your degree and focus on serving them and expect a favourable outcome in the end.

Sorry for the frustration...
I hope you take it easy on yourself please.
Your life is worth more than any amount any company can offer.
Preserve your life!

I hardly come to this thread. Don't know why I came and picked your topic.

Something tells me this, stay there and do your job humbly, it may not seem popular to you. Soon there will be a change. Don't quit. In fact, while you are there shadow what course you can do to make you outstanding, register and do it . soon you will post a new topic.

Draw close to God, humble yourself and be on the lookout for new opportunities, I've had the same experience, someone I was even more qualified than would send me to buy food, and recharge card, I swallowed my pride and behaved like school cert holder, until God lifted me.

@dvdon, I didn't get your frustration? Useful advice have been given in some of the responses but one important thing is what is the God factor in this your situation.
The present dissatisfaction could be a temporary one, have you taken time to brief the person that linked you on this development.
That the gross is above 100k should not even be any reason to stay or leave but the most important question to ask is
1. Can you cope with the job requirement(though that is the problem now)
2. Any opportunity in the company in the nearest 6-12months.
3. Will it add value to your CV.
4. Have you discussed with the owner of your future(God).
I will advice you make yourself available and get acquainted with the big ogas that run things in the organization.
Technical support coordinator today could become
Chief Technical Officer tomorrow only with a positive attitude. Cheers. smiley

First of all, hardly will you find any coy paying an office assistant a hundred and forty thousand.
Number two, it really doesn't make sense that you were given an office assistant role when they know you were a manager where you are coming from.

A part of me wants to believe that "In order to lead, you must be able to serve".
Perhaps, they are trying to see how well you perceive the concept of serving and if you are humble enough to serve.
Which sometimes are a crazy recruitment process in some coys (but I doubt this).

This may be wrong too but what choice do you have other than to do your job diligently while you keep searching for another job.
Will you paste it on your forehead that; "Hey, I am an office assistant when you go to church or social gatherings"?
It makes sense that anyone must continually aspire for more even when you have a top shelf job.

So bro, take it, keep aspiring and you may as well resign if you feel your pride or level in the corporate world is too high to that job sincerely.
To resign, this must mean you have savings to take you through the little wait or a business you could just do on the side during the wait.

Good luck.

From Engineer to Office Assistant, downgrade of the highest order.
Anyway, if the previous company can't accept you back, sit down and look for a way out. IMHO , the way out is to find a way to turn the sadness into happiness, if it does not not work out after 2-3months, then do the honourable by resigning voluntarily rather than to allow them to sack you because your happiness supercede their money.
All da Best

I have a friend who is a Top Manager In Shell, I Think Second in Command in Bonny Terminal Portharcourt....First of all, he was working with a firm that did jobs for shell as a graduate. He was earning 15k then but he said he neva let it show in his attitude to work...He worked hard and happy until one day he got a letter inviting him to resume work at Shell..o boy!!. With a pay of 200k plus on contract terms....wow!......He moved on to this new grounds and then later got full staffed but no promotion.. He said all his mates got promoted except him but he never let it show, once in a while wen odas wia collecting promotion letters he wud ask for his and they would reply " you don't deserve it so urs ain't here",..He neva stopped being happy at work...when his promotion finally came, hmmm, he said it was times 3...Three shift movement, managerial position..... Big things they say comes in small packages.

In as much as i do not agree with what i just stated above, life is a funny piece of shiii.

Just wen u think uve hit rock bottom, and u decide to be patient a little, and grass to grace becomes the order of the day.

Bro, if u dont have the patience to deal with that job, which i think if u dont fine tune your mindset will fraustrate u every single morning

Get out of the job after u collect ur salary.

But by the way, for u to leave ur prev job for a job they pay less than 150, it means u earned lesser and ur quite comfortable with ur new pay.

Bro, a job that offers an office assistant that amount?

Ask urself really. What am i more concerned about in my carrer.

A job i act as boss but get the pay of an office assistant?
Or
A job i work as an office assistant and get the salary of some bosses?

If you can convince urself on any of those answers, which i know ur indeepthly want the job that makes u a boss and pays u like a boss.

But forget the thoughts, you are here in the middle of 2,

So decide.
