Op...let me talk to you like I was there. grin

some companies will take time to study you before giving you any managerial (sensitive) position. I think this coy is trying to test something in you. prove to them that you have it.
Re: Already Frustrated With My New Job by oladcity(m): 2:06am On Nov 08, 2014
@op
Young man, you were given the job of a technical assistant (TA), "technical support coordinator" is just an embellishment. I guess lessons learnt here is that the impression a job title gives is different from actual job function.
TA position is actually a good place to start for an OND holder, but the employment situation in the country is what makes BSc/BEng holders take such jobs.
My advise: Focus on your job, this will give you an idea of what the engineers are doing, begin to ask them to cascade some of their jobs to you, so that you can relieve them of too much work, then deliver outstanding results. In time they will see value in you and make you an offer. Alternatively, look for another job, but whichever option you take, be HAPPY.

Oga engineer turn messanger...sorry about ur situation...ur position nd pay grade in ur former company is nothing to ur new employers...they employed u based on ur qualification nd what they seem fit...im going to tell u frankly no company in naija pays office assistant( well I've not seen one..so I stand to be corrected ). well over a 100k... what's happening to u now is a bruise in ur ego..which is normal considering the title u held b4 in ur former company....let me share a small true life story...a guy graduated nd got a job as a QUALITY CONTROL ANALYST (damn!! what a sweet title) with a package of 63k per month in 2010..good job actually for a 22 yr old no wife no family..but he wanted more...he applied to bank..nd wow.. he was called after spending almost two yrs in the present company..he was interviewd..nd got a job as an operations staff..salary 117k permonth. that's almost double ..he got to the branch nd found out his greatest night mare he's going to be a teller...WHAT?.. CASHIER, TELLER. just call it wateva u like..i tot this job was for OND peeps...but some how dis bank uses graduate...he hated every single day in his new job...but the truth is how many banks pay cashiers 117 permonth....mr OP...I know it demoralising when ur job description seem kinda at the bottom of the food chain...but belive me when i say this...just be humble in wateva u do...nd greatness will find u.

bros u r nt alone..

i am an engineer.. made d worst decision of my life Dec 2013.. when i chose to be a "manager" with a private firm that was new over being a sales executive at a small oil servicing firm..

though i dunno how far d oil servicing firm would have paid off.. the setting is small and nt so futuristic.

but to cut the long story short..

i ended up being an executive assistant to my boss (female). insults ehn.. no b here. i hate waking up most mornings.. but that has become the source of my drive.

check my dp.
i am HSE level 3 competent.

all i have to do now is.. save up, brace up.. and do my Nebosh certification.

ill advice u brace up.. then learn how executives roll.. the nitty gritty of an organisation, the administrative languages.

it might help u later in life.. then u could join me. lets do Nebosh joor. then hope for d best.

Please my people of nairaland, I need your advice on what step to take on this situation.

Please no insults, I just need an advice.
I am an engineer by profession, I worked as a consultant in a company some years back until I got this present job. Truth be told I was happy when I was called for an interview in a much bigger company where I presumed I will make a career. First I remember I submitted my CV to a friend who promised to hook me up with a better job, and sometime this year he called to advice I study for a test but refused to tell me the company n type of test I should prepare for. To cut off the long story, sometime last month, I was called in for an interview for the proposed job, I was elated and took an undermined risk of travelling for the interview. On reaching the office the next day, I was impressed at the company and the level of organisation in the company. I was interviewed, I performed and I was told that I will be briefed when I resume. Waow I already got the job which was what I told myself because of the way I saw how impressed the interviewers looked. Finally I got the job with an offer of below a hundred and forty thousand as gross salary, I later realized that I was employed as an office assistant, me an engineer a formal manager and to grease the elbow, it was stated in my offer letter and I was to serve a dozen of young engineers in my office. I resumed with total equality but realised that I was way below the food chain and the young stars didn't waste time to clear me on that. One of them yesterday even told me I would help him make some deposit at d bank and all that, and even went on to say that it was part of my job description. Now I know I don't have to envy which is non of my business, it's already 14 days into the job and I feel my dignity has been tramped and I may not have a quick rise here. Let me halt here but will share more ordeal I have passed through in this few days if you care.

Please I just need to know what you people think and what you have to advice either for me to get out of this situation or another.
U can easily get out when you feel like getting out !!

Or compete for your due position when the offer for such is out and as as an internal dude, you may have an edge !!

I hate when people ask for advise and they don't give the basic info. needed for one to give proper advice.

You didn't state how much you were paid in your previous job and the reason you left or was sacked!

Anyway, from the info. you already gave;
Did you read the employment letter before you commence work?

Start looking for another job and leave only when you get a better one.

If I were in your shoes, I will not quit.

So, continue looking for other opportunities and just do the current job well.

Programme your mind that the current job is to hold body together until other opportunities prop up.

Do not resign. Job hard to find o! Some people will kill to have your job now. N140k approx/month is better than N 0/month.

Btw, you will be surprised at how many people hate their jobs.

Thanks friend, you see that's not fair, why will they change a name of a position just to get the best out of it. For instance I was given Technical support coordinator and was not briefed of doing this, I was even asked if I can drive and from my investigation carried out previously I was told the moment they employ an engineer they buy the person a new car. Actually it is true, the engineers all drive brand new cars depending on the year u were employed, u get the model for that year. That's not my business, though in my former job, I was given a car, house n official driver but they had inconsistencies in paying because its an indigenous company so it is not a new thing but the fact that they even noted it on my appointment letter and the manager of my department told me that my job doesn't require it is really discouraging. I believe God sha.

Look, Nigeria is a f#ucked up country. If it were other civilised country u should get a Lawyer that specialise in Labour matters and sue this ur new company, but u c, unemployment is d order of the day in our dear country, employers can do as they wish. I assure u, if u leave this job, there are a million and one people willing to take this ur same job for a lower pay..
All sort of bullshit in Nigeria, thank your stars you are not even a contract staff..
The truth of the matter is, we need a revolution in Nigeria.

Turn the experience to a game. Use it to train yourself how to be humble, thick - skinned. Throw ego into the dustbin of your former post. It's gone for now. Today's office boy might be tomorrow office' boss, depending on whether you will handle well. The patient and humble dog eats the fattest bone.

I don't get it. Didn't your offer letter state your job description and position offered? I wanna assume it did and if it did then you definitely worked into this with your eyes wide open.

If you not happy then quit or stop complaining! My previous job I wasn't happy with what I was doing (HR) and I quit. I remember a lot of people telling me I was mad to quit before getting something else but I just couldn't see myself working there any more and it was killing my drive and morale on the job. Less than two weeks to my last day, I was asked to come pick up 2 offer letters at two different companies. One was a bank and the other was an Advertising Agency. Even though the Bank paid more, I chose to work with the Advertising Agency because it aligned with my future plan and how I would like to see my career progress.

Re: Already Frustrated With My New Job by clemzo101(m): 6:46am On Nov 08, 2014
My advise, pls do not let ur frustration show on ur face, smile all the time and keep what ever u are passing through in ur mind. It may even be a part of a bigger interview to see how u take the job, stop complaining to everybody u see on the job. Guy believe me, the HR dept is aware of ur certificate, they know ur worth with time dey will upgrade u..........but if the company is as big as u call it they won't deceive u into a role u didn't apply for, as an engineer did u not pass through a technical interview? From the interview u shld know what the job is like. And most times dey will discuss d role with u and ask ur past xperience on d role.

bravolad:
Very unfortunate situation for you. I can understand how you feel. You need to be calm while searching for the best solution. It is important I let you understand that many people are not happy with their current jobs or role profile. However, a job brings food to your table and enables you leave your house every morning. That way, you avoid home boredom & financial struggle.

You can make enquiry at your previous company to see if you could go back to the role you left. Where this is not possible, stay put in the current job while looking for new jobs. One reality you must acknowledge is that there are so many graduates driving taxis & all forms of menial work just to put food on the table yet so many others are searching for such opportunities.

For me, I think you should move away from ego, pride & the
euphoria of being an engineer to face the reality of our time. Continue in your current role, if you are very good at what you are doing, in time, you will be assigned a much dignified role and responsibility. What is more important is the added value you are bringing to the organization rather than your course of study. By the time they realize how good you are at what you do and that you are almost indispensable as the case may be, they will promote you ahead of some of your current colleagues.

Do not be discouraged, find ways to develop yourself and move on.

oo. Just the advise I need right now.... Thanks bro

People should learn to read.
And To make enquiries.
His friend told him about a company but will not disclose the name.
The company told him he will be briefed of the role 'when' he resumes. I.e. He did not even know the role before resuming.
It was written in his offer letter but I'm guessing he didnt see it until after he had signed-after he had resumed.
Does this mean that he quit his previous job for a job he did not have full details of?

one of my My slogan in life is as long as you pay me really well, then you can insult me.

that is just the problem with some Nigerians living in Nigeria. they want to tell their mates that they work in so and so company with heavy names even when the work place pays peanut as salaries.

they are paying you what you expected to be paid, why are you complaining? assuming you were in abroad and you were offered such job, you wouldn't have minded. you would not have been here ranting because it is US OR London or some other country.

Bro do your job and do it with your head raised high because there is dignity in labor. i have never seen any one that got job satisfaction except you work in radio station where they talk all day and play music or you are the boss of yourself. That is why it is called job.
