These people are scartered in major places im lagos especialy lagos island.
This happened when i was undergoing my industrial training at a firm i lagos island. There was this pretty, well dressed and cute woman. The first time she approached, I was in the bus wating for the bus to full she said with sprinkle of tears about to come out fro. her eyes "Good afternoon sir, please me and my daughter are stranded and we are still going to festac, i lost my wallet and i dont have any money with me, please help me" Thank God I was just with my exact t-fare that day.
The next day this woman aproached me again with the same excuse. I just thank God that I didnt fall for her trick.
After about three weeks, she approached some men in the bus and they gave her 500 nair each to the extent that one woman chased her when she left so that she can give her own donation. After the woman left, the two men started showing some pity for the woman. I could not help my silence but to tell them that the woman just fooled them, they didnt beleive until another woman testified to my claim.

I once heard of a beggar that died. He had almost #900,000 on him, am sure he'll be richer than almost everybody he begs from

I understand you. Nobody will beg if they are comfortable. For me the problem is not that they begging but the medium through which they beg using religion to put fear in you or outright lying is an insult on our intelligence.

#villagetinz is when the ex-prisoner beggar asks for money in the bus and you are the one that shouts him down.... 20 mins into the journey, the guy and two other passengers bring out their guns

One entered our bus wearing aboki suit, with faded neck and his hair is jerry curled and started asking 'are you a christian?' if you say yes, he will give u an envelop, sometime was written on it like church growth and missionary work.
I didnt bother to collect. Then, he started asking those that collected to return the envelop. Just 2 guys dropped sometin in the envelope. He collected their numbers and said he was going to call them.

A woman just said, my number wan you collect, you never still call me since. With shame,, the man droppd at d next bus stop.

Similar things like that are happening in different ways, even some of ur Secondary school teachers.Imagine a teacher requested three hundred naira from every student in school which I was among, all in the name of workbook without giving us the workbook, evry year he kept demanding three naira from us for the six yrs I stay in that school I paid close to 2000,and we were more than 300 in a class from j s s1 to ss3 calculate such huge amounth of money.the funny part of it all is that if you refuse to pay, he Is ready to beat away your sense and if mistakingly you ask him of the workbook of which you paid for, then that very day you will be among those people that will be expel from school without any reason or he will look for one way or the other to lie against you to the principal.so fraud is everywhere in the world not only nigeria.

I have mixed feelings about the amount of beggars in public across Nigeria.

On one hand its kinda crazy because when you are truly stranded and in that situation, you may not get help yourself.

Gosh, I remember when I was stranded and the only thing I could do was beg, the look I got from niccas that day was beyond chilling.

Some dudes wouldn't even look me in the eye, lol.

On the other hand, it's like these professional beggars are really spoiling the show for peeps that really need assistance.

Then again, how can you truly tell who needs assistance without having the ability to see through to the soul?

So what should be our conclusion? To give, or not to give? To ban beggars from the streets or leave them as they are?

Really touchy subject, I for one prefer going through NGOs that have a good outreach, but bottom line I guess is you can't just shut down your gates of giving due to some miscreants.

I went to UNILAG some days ago and on my way back from my faculty a guy approached me and begged for transport money that he is stranded. I just sighed because I had less than #300 on me that day. I asked him how come he was stranded and what department he was, he said he was in Industrial Chemistry and his money finished. Asked if he doesn't stay in the hostel and he said he does but he needed to go home to get something.

Considering that it was a Friday, I had to believe him and when I asked how much his fare was he said #300. I was like ahhhhh I cant afford that oo so i gave him #100. A part of me felt he lied because there's no way a student won't have someone to borrow #300 from but I didn't feel bad about giving him because there was a time a guy had begged me for money to eat and I felt it was scam and didn't gjve him. Its over 2 years and I still feel bad about it and wish I could have helped him out because I had the money.

Hmmm
If you have kwanu you give them. Abi do people who beg have money and still beg? Will you die if you give them 100 or 200 naira which is even not enough to continue these life? Give them biko...we have no reason whatsoever no to give to them.... Our concern should n't be if it is a business or not but that they asked and we did give.
THANK YOU.

It is very wrong to encourage this. While it is good to help people in need, it should not be abused by people who take others for a fool to make their living

Just recently, at one of the parks in Onitsha on my way to Aba. I watched with keen interest as three suit-wearing and bible-clutching men compete amongst one another the first to pray for the occupants of the buses b4 their departures. Then, one came to our bus and prayed for forgiveness of sins, for success in our various endeavours and also for journey mercies. "Amen!" we chorused at required intervals. Then he asked for money to finance his good works for God. He left for other buses to win more souls (for himself i guess) and then another came with an even more powerful lines of prayers. Again, we (they) made contributions for his services.

This style of money-making by such "prayer-peddlars" has worsened over the years. Their modus operandi vary, for eg, one may board the bus along other passengers. He preaches, prays and collects his revenue on transit and then alights at a given junction making way for another of his cronies to join the bus as the journey continues.

This "disguised" begging business must be very lucrative especially when one considers the risk involved and skills exhibited by such practioners. Some time ago, I equally saw some physically challenged (if truly they were) persons on their wheel-chairs lined up at the middle of the Niger-bridge express way chasing after motorists moving at top speeds for alms.

The list for such begging excesses abound!
Initially, i'm usually dumb-founded whenever i come across these brazen display. But on the realization that this is Nigeria where anything can happen, i now look at them in awe! Have u witnessed any other begging ploy? Pls share ur story.

Other begging ploy is by full fledged babes asking for recharge cards. The modes and methods are numerous but the end feeling remains degrading . On topic, the few times it happened while i was in d bus, i never joined in the prayers or said amen to them and i never had and never will them money. Paul the apostle said with his hands he worked out what he fed with and even take care of those close by. They should stop lazying about and go get busy with meaningful jobs including farming

There are times those pleas are genuine. I was coming back to Lagos years ago as a student and all my money was stolen while i was scrambling to join a bus. On the way i was sooo thirsty. So when we stopped at the usual point for refreshment i told a certain guy to spare me some change for pure water. I was not even talking about food. It was with a heavy betrayed heart that i monitored the guy eating and then buying suya and then his drinks but to spare me N10 never happened. It dawned on me that he probably did not believe me. Today i hand out help to people because sometimes they may be genuine. But as for the brazen liars , shishi i no dey give.

I see loads of them @ Ojodu Berger in Lagos everyday when going to work. sometimes its like a family business...Father, mother and their children all begging. Personally if some1 is disabled, or when its lil kids I do give. But healthy n abled adults I am always reluctant to give except if I feel they are stranded. For those bus preacher, bus and park beggars I Don't give.

I stepped out from the popular metropolitan supermarket in Uyo. I started the car and was about to leave then this man knock on my window.

Holding his folder he introduced himself as Edidiong Ekanem from Eket. He said he just attended a meeting in Uyo but got stranded going back as he is short of funds.

I handed him the whole change i had which was exactly N350. He look at the money in disgust and guess what will come our his mouth.

"Is that all, this will not take me to Eket now".

I said give me bck so i can give you N500 with the expectation of denying him when he gives me. He said bring it, i just rollled up my glass and swore i will never be kind to anyone in need again.

I've parted with my hard earned money to this professional beggars that I decided to stop it, there is an incident that happened that I ll share. I was with my neighbour outside around 10pm talking when a middle aged man walked up to us, he said he was going to Obalende that he had no money on him, my friend told him that he doesn't have any money I said the same also. The man now said we should enter inside and bring money, I was agitated wit what he said, I told him if he was going to Obalende he doesn't have to enter my street to look for money rather he should be at the bus stop. I called my street security to arrest the man, when he was searched we found close to 5k on him, I had to hand him over to police patrol team that was passing by.

I have a good one.
Driving to Shoprite one day with a friend, gisting and distracted. Almost getting to my destination, one well-dressed light skinned guy flagged me down, holding his ATM card in his hand. I stopped thinking it was someone I or my friend knew from somewhere, the way he stopped me.
With urgency in his voice, he said he was stranded, his ATM card won't pay him and that he need to get his pregnant wife to hospital because she was bleeding. I did not even think. I started looking for money to give him. I found 500 only in my wallet. I think what saved me from giving him more was because that was all I had on me. Driving off, we started replaying his story and concluded it was so false and had just been duped. Well, what can I do? Learnt my lesson since then.

I had an encountered with the same guy weeks later, this time he was at Mobil filling station, knocking at my window to wind down. I was glad I recognised him. I totally ignored him, was too tired to say anything to him that day.
