tobsin: Hey house,

As regards giving birth in Canada, it is true that any child born on Canadian soil gets automatic citizenship. However, I beg to disagree with Justwise that the child gets automatic health card too. Health card is given only if either parent has one.
Regarding when to 'enter', I know someone that came in less than 3 weeks before she had her baby. I'm not sure of the official date.

Thanks

Tobsin, I beg to differ with the bolded part. The health card is the first thing the hospital would give to any child born in Ontario. The child would get the health card even before getting the birth certificate. When the mother is about to be discharged from the hospital, the hospital would give to the mother the temporary health card ( a piece of paper) for the baby as the permanent health card (the plastic one) would be sent to her through post office. The mother has to apply for a birth certificate and Social Insurance ONLINE and they will be sent to her via post office.

@OP, in the case of low risk pregnancy, there is also the possibility of giving birth from "home" with a midwife instead of going to the hospital.
Midwifery services are completely funded by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, so women do not pay for care out-of-pocket. Women who are not currently covered by OHIP can still receive free midwifery care. - See more at: http://www.ontariomidwives.ca/midwife/q-a

@Rexwood, between 7 to 14 days, u will get the passport. However, if both parents won't be available at that time, Passport Canada would send a message with da child's file no to Canadian embassy either in ABj, ph or lagos (anyone datz closer to u) to go there nd sign nd it will den be faxed to the passport office in CANADA u sent ur application before the passport will be processed cuz they need both parents signature.

Cost of birth will differ from hospital to hospital and Dr to Dr cuz its the gynecologist that u saw through pregnancy that will deliver u nd depending on where u reside is where u will give birth. If u r in Mississauga nd hospital is full den they will tell u ahead of time dat it will be in Brampton which is close to Mississauga

Hello Rexwoods,

You can also get a passport within 24 hours if you you use the expedited services available for Canadians in person at a Passport office in Canada

This is the data I find on the Passport Canada website http://www.ppt.gc.ca/info/service.aspx?lang=eng&region=Canada#PPTC

Service ##################### Additional fee#########Processing time
Urgent pick-up ################ C$110 #################24 hours
Express pick-up ############### C$50 ##################2 to 9 business days
Standard pick-up ############## C$20 ##################10 business days

As for hospital cost, I agree with Hotstepper as she indicates that it depends on the hospital.
I have no idea of the cost range given that the Canadian Government foot the bill for Canadian Citizens and permanent resident. Canadians citizens and permanent residents only pay for the cost of a private room if they choose to stay in a private room.

I will get back to you with the cost range of different hospitals.

You may also consider checking with an insurance company to see if they can cover your maternity BILL.

I can recommend you EMPIRE LIFE. It is the insurance company I use through my employer. I did use them to pay for my wife private room in the hospital upon the birth of my son.

You can call them COLLECT CALL from anywhere in the world @ 519-742-2800 (they will pay for your phone call from anywhere in the world)
But, if you calling them from the US or Canada, you should use this tall free number 1-800-321-9998.
Or you can visit them ONLINE www.empire.ca

Good luck

Jenny thanks. HotStepper. Previous posts are not so detailed and you know lots would av changed between 2013 and now.I am 27weeks along. How do I contact a midwife or doc cos it seems they are not enthusiastic about signing on late patients.

Then how much would it cost. Best flights. I need to be armes with more info. Thanks.
Re: Giving Birth In Canada by Hotstepper(f): 11:24am On Nov 23, 2014
You see, Canada is different from US in this aspect. You cannot just contact a gynecologist straight. You have to go through a general physician that will now refer u based on where u r staying, this is even for Ppl who lives in Canada.

If you have a contact here, Datz where thru can come in nd help u. They can go through their family Dr nd den get u all the info like da cost of birth nd at wat stage they stop taking clients

My gynea wen I asked him said 3-5k CAD for normal nd 5-7k CAD for CS but st that time, around June this year he said he's full nd can't take any more clients. Then my friend told me about a naija gynea she uses. I can get his info if you want to contact him.

all flights comes to Toronto but I prefer Ethiopian airline cuz of their services, leg space, less waiting time etc

I hope this helps a lil bit

If I am a student in Canada on a Study Permit and registered with a health card in a province like Alberta or Saskatchewan or Manitoba where health care is free for international students will i be required to pay the same 3-5K CAD after giving birth.
