From an environmentalist's point of view, this gesture will reduce people's dependence on firewood, which in turn will reduce deforestation and put a stop to desertification. The beneficiaries are the poor people. If it's not well implemented is another case entirely. All in all,it's a nice gesture from the govt.

And whose fault is that. Why wont they enrich their own economy when our useless youths would rather sit down and complain "jonathan dis, jonathan dat, ha his wife cannot speak english, oh he is clueless" and most of this useless youths cannot come up with something innovative to the onward development of this nation. Only action not words alone can change this country for the better.

Ask not wat your country will do for you, ask wat you will do for your country.

Haven said that, by now you should realize how stupid you are.
You still aren't making sense. I know what I've contributed personally to this country. Even if the youths aren't contributing/doing anything, what about the elderly ones? Everyone cannot be wrong at the same time!

You're actually the stoopid one here coz you haven't proven any point but to repeat the "Ask not wat your country will do for you, ask wat you will do for your country" bullshiiit. Even Life is about giving and taking; and not a one sided thing.

I should not even argue with you coz you're too myopic. Please Don't quote me again.

What fuel would be used to power these stoves, we need to know. Already the stove seems to be way above 10,000 already. There need to be some clarity here.

You are just a dimwit trying to sound smart and learned because u read one book.

Everyone lawful person in society contributes. Even though I am an entrepreneur not everyone is. Doctors contribute, teachers contribute etc. So long as you are doing your job well you are contributing to society.

Now tell me what the contribution of our rulers has been like and if this stove purchase is a good contribution.

Even the entrepreneurs are complaining so I dont think you are one.
entrepreneurs complain yet they still smile to the bank. would you start a house knowing you do not have the money to complete it.

i laugh at people like you because you seem to sound clueless. abi is it not this same country dangote became the richest man in africa and mrs alakija became the richest woman in africa? look around you and see people owning cars worth 1.5million yet we complain. if you want to see poverty first hand go to Sudan and you will thank God for being a Nigerian.

If you are serious about making it in Nigeria you will make it just like many young millionaires in this country because the opportunity is there, just dont expect a free ride. Think of it, if everybody makes it nobody will work for any reason. Gone are the days manna fall from heaven. Open your eyes and see opportunies and not failure.

FALSE CLAIMS! Do not buy!
By Amy Carle - November 14, 2013
Amazon Verified Purchase
I cannot begin to tell you the magnitude of my disappointment in this product, the Wonderbag.
I had so much enthusiasm for this new product that seemed to be changing lives all over the world. I was even willing to pay the extremely expensive price for a product that was so dedicated and passionate about helping people. I try to be a very informed consumer. I like to make sure a product is high quality and economical, foremost. Since this company also claims their product is good for the environment and a worthy contribution to society, I believed I could not go wrong by the purchase of this product. In fact, the main reason for this purchase was to try it out, so that I could give them as gifts.
After making the purchase, I proceed to prepare for its arrival with all of the other necessary items I would need to create my first masterpiece of a meal, with joyful thoughts of impressing my large family. I imagined my family of seven all sitting around the table, savoring each bite of a delicious home cooked meal while discussing the possibilities of future meals and what a wonderful gift this product would make for our family and friends. It is good that I did try this product before giving it to anyone else. I would not want them to suffer the horrible events, physically, emotionally, and financially, that my family has suffered because of this product.
After reading many reviews on Amazon and visiting the company website to become more informed of this intriguing product, I finally made the decision to purchase the Wonderbag from Amazon on October 13, 2013. I did not own a pot that would be meet the appropriate requirements as quoted in the description of the product:
"Fits your home - Works with 2-9 Quart pots with short handles and lid; metal and cast iron work best"
Therefore, I also purchased an 8-quart stainless steel pot from Amazon on October 23, 2013. By this time, I had already received the Wonderbag. I was so excited to see it and looked through all the directions, following the guidelines for bringing the Wonderbag to life in 4 easy steps. Although I could hardly wait to use the product, I wanted to be sure I was doing everything correctly. I proceeded to search recipes and gather ingredients in anticipation of the inaugural meal using my incredible new Wonderbag! After reviewing the recipes in the enclosed Knorr pamphlet, I decide on the Homestyle Beef Stew. I had also purchased the Knorr concentrated homestyle beef stock, even though I felt the company is possibly teaming up with Wonderbag for their own profiteering agenda.
The day finally arrived when I had all the necessary ingredients for the first meal using my new Wonderbag. It was a perfect day, because we had a long weekend full of busy activities. After church on Sunday, November 3 2013, I washed my new stainless steel pot and lid. Then I carefully prepared the ingredients for our stew, following the recipe in the Knorr booklet, which came with my Wonderbag, exactly as described. I brought all the ingredients to a boil and then reduced the temperature to medium low. My family kept commenting on how good it smelled. When the 15-minute low simmer was over, I stirred the delicious smelling stew, replaced the lid on the pot, removed the pot from the stove, and placed it into the Wonderbag. Then, I place the Wonderbag cover on top of the pot and pulled the drawstring closed. Right away, I noticed a very odd burning smell. There were a few drips on the sides of the pot, so I assumed that a few drips landed on the stove top and that was where the smell was coming from. I checked to be sure I had turned off the stove, which I had. My family left the house for our afternoon activities, fully expecting to return to the house in about 4 hours with a delicious pot of home cooked stew waiting for us on our dining room table!
We returned home four hours later, expecting to smell delicious stew, upon entering the house. You cannot imagine our shock and dismay when we were overwhelm by the most disgusting burnt smell. It was so overwhelming that my family left the room while I proceed to investigate the cause. I first checked the stove to be sure nothing was left on. The stove was off. It was obvious the smell was coming from the dining room table. I carefully opened the Wonderbag to check on the food. The pot was still very hot and the food looked fine. I attempted to lift the pot out of the Wonderbag and shockingly it was stuck to the bottom. I pulled harder and the pot came loose. I could not believe my eyes at what I was looking at next! A giant whole, the exact size of the pot was burned all the way through the top layer of fabric and foam. The only thing left was the outer layer of fabric. When I lifted the Wonderbag up from the table a burned circle was left on my table! The fabric of the Wonderbag is melted to the bottom of my new stainless steel pot. The stew inside the pot was now burned on the bottom. I am still in shock over the events that have taken place! My husband I quickly examined all of the papers that had come with the Wonderbag and even the stainless steel pot. I did everything exactly has directed. There is not a single thing in the directions that warned us that this could happen. In fact, it is quite the contrary:
FALSE CLAIM:
"Because it is not on direct heat, it will never overcook or burn."
Even though the top of the stew looked fine, the burned taste had permeated the food and it was inedible. I had to throw out all the food, over $30 worth of ingredients. I had to open all the windows in my house to rid it of the horrible smell, wasting the electricity being used to heat my house.
FALSE CLAIM:
"It reduces toxic fumes which means less respiratory problems and other diseases, particularly in children."
I had to order take-out food for my famished family. This sounds so trite when I think of the poor families in underprivileged countries. The exact families I thought I was somehow helping, in my own small way. I had planned to help more. My dreams of buying more Wonderbags for families and friends is now squelched. My anticipation of spreading the word about this incredible new product is now ended.
"Buy One, Donate One: For every Wonderbag purchased in the US, one is donated to a family in need in Africa; Families in developing countries who use Wonderbags save up to 30% of their income otherwise spent on fuel for wood stoves."
All of the valuable time and resources invested, gone! My brand new stainless steel pot ruined! My dining room table ruined! My belief that I was going to help save my family money by investing in this product has actually cost me more.
FALSE CLAIM:
"No Plugs, No fuss - Cooks your food, unplugged, by retaining the heat from an initial simmer on the stove; Perfect for the holidays when stove, freezer and counter space are at a premium."
Everything that the Wonderbag website claims is false. There are no warnings about temperature of the pot.
I have attempted to contact the company but have received no response. This company is not based in the USA. The only contact information available for a USA purchase is an e-mail address. There is no phone number or mailing address!

I was excited to receive the bag, as we want to have as small a carbon footprint as possible. I also wanted to write a review of the product.

I prepared the bag as per instructions.

I followed the recipe book to cook beef stew, leaving out the vegetables for simplicity. I wanted to see if it would cook my regular recipe which I start on the stove top and finish in the oven. After 4 1/2 hours in the bag, I opened the bag to find a slightly warm pot containing partially raw beef.

No returns on this scam bag.

This is essentially a haybox, but more expensive, and less durable. Fifty dollars to purchase a couple pieces of foam seems like too much. I have a friend who bought one of these and it is not really something I can see standing up to hard use at all. I am also concerned about the possibility of plastics and related chemicals leeching into hot foods. Does this bag contain Bisphenol A?

I guess people will continue to buy them because it gives them the illusion that they are somehow helping the poor. Thinking you are helping is much better and easier than actually helping.

Following the instructions, I tried it on 2 occasions cooking the first meal & putting it in the wonderbag for about 9-10 hrs, & 7-8 hrs the second time. The meat wasn't fully cooked, & it was only luke-warm at best so to avoid salmonella we had to discard the food. I spent $57 on this, hoping to be able to use this in preparing meals, & at the same time help someone in Africa;.

I am a little annoyed with the marketing of this product. My grandmother cooked like this, for example rice, just by putting the pot with the rice in her bed for 2 hours. A bed is not as portable, but $50 cheaper
African people always used similar ways, for example by cooking and keeping things warm in holes. Maybe some Africans need an reminder of these very old techniques, but I do not think that they need some plasic insulated bag that will add to their garbage problem The "African" lady in this marketing picture has an electrical stove hmmm.

Is it a slow cooker that conserves heat? yes. Does it do its job well? again, yes.

The problem? Slow cooking is, inherently, an inefficient means of cooking. You may have been led to think it was some saving grace to all across africa that are afflicted with energy problems.

The problem is that a pressure cooker can cook the exact same meals FAR more efficiently than any slow cooker. In fact, it is already the primary means of cooking such dishes in africa, as well as other blooming countries like india.

It tries to fill in a niche that is already well taken care of. Frankly, the only reason I would recommend this product is if you wanted to help make some african woman's cliche dream of wealth come true.

glorified travel bag. Doesn't cook will keep it warm but cook? I would not trust my food in it. Not something I would spend my time with. Slow cooker is so much safer. But if that isn't an option, I guess this might be the answer for you but then again if you can't use a slow cooker, I wonder how you are using a computer to read this and order onehuh just wondering.

we tried this in Uganda and it did not work. So sad because we thot this would be a good way for our young mothers and widows to cook and save money on charcoal.

Hay boxes are not a new invention. Indeed they've been around for at least a century by that name and longer in one form or another. Put hot food in the hay box, the insulation keeps the heat in and the food cooks without more heat. Virtually every person in the 3rd world could be taught to make one from materials to hand - some brick / plastic / wooden / cardboard for the box container and paper, rags, blankets, polystyrene, grass etc as the insulation to pack around the pot. It can be made from scraps.

This is the sort of self sufficiency that countries should be teaching people instead of waiting on handouts from companies who're guilt tripping Amazon customers who would be better off buying a slow cooker. If you have the electricity to be browsing Amazon then you have the electricity to run a slow cooker. It cooks food better. It's safer (food cooks at a high temperature). It stores in less space. It only costs cents to run.

Or build your own haybox. You could improvise one in about 5 minutes. e.g. take an empty cardboard box, stuff a pillow in the bottom, put the pot in, put another pill on top, make sure it's tight and snug and close the box. Voila, a "wonderbox".

This is fine of you are just transporting food from one place to another, but you have to do most of the cooking before you even put the food in the bag. By then you might a well finish it and just eat it.

Ovamboland:
Countless stove and efficient cooking methods has been prototype by numerous indigenous companies, Addis Engineering, Techo-Quip, Advance -Tech and countless Nigerian fabricators and so many similar projects in polytechnics and universities.
Yet this clueless government will splash 9bn Naira to enrich the South African economy and leave our own designers, fabicators, and craftmen unappreciated.
What is in a stove? you can call a design contest by giving out specifications e.g design a stove that will use 50% less fuel ans produce 40% more heat and give out 95% less smoke. Same way US government will give specifications to it's defense contractors like produce fither planes that can active 100,000 Ft ceiling, top speed of mach 5 and range of 3000 miles while consuming 30% less fuel.

We know it is campaign material for PDP paid for by the FG, but is it too much to make it count? Call like 10 fabricator firms, attach a proffessor and researchers to each firm, give them matching grant of like 10 million naira, and 6 months time and see the wonder that will be produced plus the knowledge and know-how that will be resident in-country. The best 1 or 2 designs will then be standard specification to be masses produced by fabricators all over the country. That knowledge spurned by foresight will be available to develop other simple devices.
We keep displaying the fact that we are clueless people and are not hungry for development. I am sure even Ghana or Benin Republic will not throw away it's money like that.

Then 18000 wonder bags?! are we real ?
my brother hmm you are talking of 6 months when election is February. A clear indication they don't have this country at heart

Whats this brainless chap on about?

That everybody in the planet and in Nigeria should be an entrepreneur or they dont have a right to criticize the government?

Was it an entrepreneur that taught you in school? When you are sick do you go and visit an Entrepreneur? We have heard you..you are an entrepreneur...how many people can you employ compared to a favorable government initiative that creates jobs?

How many can you individually create compared to what government can do with providing power? For your information 9.2 billion is far more than what a lot of companies in Nigeria that are even quoted on the stock exchange declare as profit. These are companies that employ thousands of jobs and provide value to society, but they dont have that kind of money to spend on frivolities.

You want us all to keep living in a society with no functioning road, light or security because individuals are making millions. That is not a functioning society, that is a jungle. And in the jungle no matter how highly placed you are on the food chain, you just might walk into the wrong den on a bad day. Besides how much money can one man make to provide all the basics for everyone he/she cares for. From your argument there is no need for a government then.

Every society should aspire to be better. Even the USA does not think they cannot do better and Obama gets the heat for that. Your argument of Sudan is moot. Sudan is aspiring, Nigeria should aspire too. We are at the bottom of all human development indexes. Access to education, doctors, security etc. You say we should all fend for ourselves for what are "public goods" things only government can provide? Sorry Sir, you are full of bullsh!!!!t. Try and read more and educate yourself further. I warn you: I little knowledge is a dangerous thing.

WOW! This should be a new topic and should go to front page let Nigerians see the height of cluenessless

It perplexes me if dis government has a thinking cap. So South Africa could invent a cooking stove and we buy. A refinary dat is most important to us, we have not established one. My uncle used to tell me wisdom is not obtainable in d university

Omooba77:
The Federal Executive Council on Wednesday approved the purchase of N9.2billion worth of clean cook stoves and wonder bags for rural women under the National Clean Cooking Scheme.

Wonder bag is a non-electric slow cooker invented by Sarah Collins, ‎a south African eco-entreprenuer, who came up with the idea six years ago during a power cut, when she decided to keep her dinner cooking by surrounding the pan with cushions.

The council also awarded a contract of N60.9billion to an indigenous firm, KaKatar CE Limited, for the provision of engineering infrastructure for Kyami District, Zone C, Abuja.

Supervising Minister of Information, Dr. Nurudeen Muhammed; Minister of Environment, Mrs. Lawrecia Mallam; and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Senator Bala Muhammed, briefed State House correspondents at the end of the meeting presided over by Vice President Namadi Sambo.

Muhammed said the N9.2billion inclusive of Value Added Tax was approved for the procurement of 750,000 units of clean cook stove and 18,000 wonder bags.

He said the stoves are expected to be delivered by Messrs Integra Renewable Energy Services Limited within a period of 12 weeks.

He noted that the stoves which will be assembled locally, will provide jobs to Nigerians among other benefits.

The minister said, “The National Clean Cooking Scheme is an aggressive drive to engender clean cooking culture amongst the poor rural women, to reduce and possibly eliminate cooking with solid fossil which is detrimental to health.

“The scheme is expected to provide 20 million clean stoves over a five-year period at the rate of four million stoves yearly which will be distributed without charge.

“It will also reduce incessant felling of trees which exposes the country to ecological problems.

This is a good development provided it won't go into the hands of greedy politicians as in the Relief materials of the last flood disaster. Ecology and nature conservation is a worthy consideration now. Biodiversity and nature will be of immense aid if the government sit up now. What about those heavy smoking truck engines, motorcycles and daily pollution from factories depositing unheard level of toxic and harmful gaseous filaments?

Then you dont have the right to be critical of what the government is doing.

You are not ashamed to admit you dont have anything positive to contribute to the development of this country yet you open your rotten mouth to abuse the government. Shame on you.

People like you should be thrown to hell, you are useless here.
To get on my nerve you'll have to do better than that, but bro I'm not the cause of your frustration so why are you trying to transfer your aggression on me? Anyway, I understand that the situation of the country has eaten deep into your brain so that the minute portion left is incapable of cognitive reasoning. My sincere advice to you is to try and visit other advanced countries of the world, then you'll stop celebrating mediocrity and start asking the Govt. to do what the electorates elected them to do.

Our Federal Government has taken a lot of idiotic steps in the past few years, however, this must be the most idiotic of all decisions taken in the last 4 years!

What strategic benefit would this senseless expenditure bring aside its use for election spending and enrichment of some clueless government officials and their stooges?

We deserve the type of leaders we have!

A whopping N9.2 billion for stoves to be distributed to rural people? N9.2 billion!

Even in the face of dwindling revenues, this government just can't put an end to its squandermania. Stoves for 9Billion and you say Jonathan knows how to run an economy!! I guess when the cloud of this shiitstorm they are gathering breaks and starts to rain, they wouldn't go looking for whom to blame.

This is just madness.
Omenka, it is the height of madness! Sheer insanity, I dare say!

God bless you, nothing to add. So apt...
