The story is pure fiction. Any resemblance or coincidence with anybody's name or character is just coincidental.

CHAPTER ONE

“What a sad day.” Chris remarked with a heavy heart as he sank down into one of the settee in his brother’s sitting room. He removed the black spectacle from his eyes and crossed his right leg on his left leg.

Chris was in his late mid-forties, forty-six years to be precise while his late brother was forty-four years old when he died. A sparse of grey hair can be spotted in the right side of his head exactly where it was on his brother, Funto. They were like identical twins despite the difference in their ages.

The whole room was gloomy and boring. One could easily hear the sound of a pin if it falls down. His brother’s wife was there among the sympathizers. Actually they just came back from the cemetery where they just buried his brother.

His mind wandered back to sixteen years ago when their father’s will was read to their ears in this same living-room which is now his brothers’.

Chris and Funto were the two sons of chief Bode Brian, the famous business mogul who specialized in oil and gas businesses. Chris is the elder of the two.

It happened that their father put a clause into his will that whoso-ever first get married among his sons should be the sole owner of his company but the beneficiary must be giving the other brother twenty percentage of their annual income. This was concealed from the two gentlemen by his lawyer. Even if they knew, little would have happened because they were both in love with a girl.

Tonia can be best described as the epitome of beauty. She has a beautiful set of teeth that is as white as snow. Her hour-glass figure made it hard for boys to ignore her; even her succulent, ripe and robust br’east was an eye sore. She always walks in elegancy. She can be best describing as an elfin. Her opulent parents also add to her beauty.

Funto eventually got married to the lady through the help of his friend Segun who is a cousin to Tonia. This broke the heart of Chris and he eventually travelled out of the state to the neighbouring state to continue with his business. This happened eighteen years ago.

Two years after the marriage of Funto and Tonia, their father died and the Will was read to them. This did not bothered Chris as he has become successful in his transportation business. He went back to his booming business. The two brothers seldom meet. They were always busy with their respective businesses.

Funto was coming from one of their oil well in Port-harcourt when he had an auto-accident; a Good Samaritan rushed him to a hospital but his driver died on the spot. The doctor said his cerebro-spinal-cord was broken and he also suffered a massive brain haemorrhage. He eventually died the third day. The news was broken to his wife and their twins children.

The burial was done two weeks after the accident.

He was brought back to reality with the sudden uproar coming from Tonia.

“You succeeded in killing my husband and you still have the effrontery to come into my house?” Tonia was barking at a lady in her mid-twenties.

“Please I just want to see Mr. Chris and that is all.” The lady pleaded but she was barred from coming in by some sympathizers so as to avoid the impending chaos.

“Let her in.” Chris commanded and the lady despite her gloomy and worn-out face was stunned that how on earth can two people be identical like this even with their posture, voice and calmness in all situations.

“Oh! My God! You must be Chris.” The lady pointed out shrugging off the people holding her to examine the replica of her love standing in-front of her.

“Yes and you must be the Evelyn Funto has been telling me about.” He responded and at the same time ushering her out to the amazement of the watchful onlookers who were waiting to see a drama enfold. But their hope was dashed when Chris lead the lady out and whispered some things to her.

He came back in and headed straight to the guest-room ignoring the probing eyes of the onlooker and called his driver to wake him in the next forty minutes as he have and appointment to keep that time, he checked on his Rolex wrist watch and the time was 11AM.

To the amazement of the sympathizer and Tonia, Sharon one of her twins waved the lady as she turned to take her leave and they both responded with the only smile the house have seen for the past two weeks.

“Had I delivered under anesthesia, I would have said Sharon was not my daughter.” Tonia lamented as she flung herself into the double divan bed she once shared with Funto and drifted into a heavy slumber that has elude her for the past two weeks not because of her husband’s death but because of influx of dignitaries into the house.

CHAPTER TWO
AROUND 1PM

Evelyn walked majestically to the table where Chris was sitting down. She couldn’t still believe the man in her front wasn’t Funto. They were so alike that someone could have passed one for each other. She looks deep into his face and discovered that except the dimple that was absent in Chris face there is no difference.

“I am sorry I am a bit late.” She apologized as she sat down in the chair across Chris’ table. He checked on his watch and discovered that he had actually spent thirty minutes there waiting for her.

“I don’t even know I have been sitting here that long.” Chris repels her apology as he shifted his chair to face her. “I am so much grateful to you for being with my brother in the latter years of his life, he told me you brought back joy into his life.” He continued.

“He equally deserved much more than that.” Evelyn said with a sigh as she rested her chin oh her folded knuckles.

Chris ordered the barman to give her soft drinks but she told the barman that only a strong drink could do for the moment. Chris understand her feelings deeply well enough and beckons her to continue with what she invited him for in the first place.

Then she began her stories......

“My name is Evelyn Brown; I was born 27 years ago to a fairly well-to-do family. Ironically, my father worked in your father’s oil company as the chief security officer.

My daddy forbade mummy from working as she was diagnosed with leukemia shortly after my birth, this also denied them of giving birth to another child as he don’t want to risk the health of his beloved wife. That makes me the only child of my parents.

Daddy would ensure that nearly all we needed were provided, he never joked with the welfare of his little family. He would even find times to take us out for picnic whenever he was less busy as his job was time consuming and demanding.

I could remember very clearly on my fourth year birthday, mummy, I and my aunty who is daddy’s junior sister was in the living and I was dressed gorgeously waiting impatiently for my father to arrive with the birthday cake he promised to bring when coming from his place of work when the telephone rang on the table. I collided with my Aunty at the table as she was about to pick the phone because mummy went to the kitchen as she was preparing our supper.

“Hello…..” my aunty said to the mouthpiece. I noticed that her eyes suddenly became swollen with tears. What she was told on the phone was a misery to me. Simultaneously I heard piercing cry from her and my mum. She also overhead the discussion from the receiver that was in the kitchen.

“What happened? Why are you people crying? Does that means daddy will not be coming home today?” I asked childishly.

“I am afraid he won’t.” was the swift reply from my aunty.

My aunty rushed out of the house while my mum kept pacing in the sitting-room. Trinket of sweats began to stroll down her neck. She took her time to explained to me that daddy was involved in a ghastly motor accident and he was terribly injure and I should keep praying for him to be alright so that he can bring me my birthday cake.

I was waked up second day to the wailing of my mother. I taught it was her usual agony of illness. Daddy eventually died from the accident.

I cried on the burial day not because daddy was dead but because some callous people were lowering daddy into a pit!

My mother was never the same again. What was once a joyous home suddenly becomes a gloomy place of abode. My mum seldom smiles and I too always long for the customary knocking of my Dad late in the night.

When I was five years, my Mum fell sick and broke down terribly partly due to dad’s death and due to her health status. Almost all the money daddy left behind was spent on my mother. She succumbed to the cold hands of death eventually.

CHAPTER THREE

I was put in the care of my aunty. She wasn’t that caring person I thought her to be. I was trusted early into school so that I won’t disturb her I guess.

Everything became boring and at so tender age of six, I began truancy in the school. I would stay in an empty shop adjacent to my school and cried the whole day because I always missed my parents. This went on for like a week when my aunty found out through one of our teachers.

She scolded me for the first time in life and I took this bitterly as it left an indelible mark on my left cheek and greatly on my mind.

I promised myself to run away from her house and back to my parents’ house one day. I kept to this promise and made for the house one particular morning after she has dropped me in the school, I wandered around the city of Lagos for a whole day and couldn’t find the house. Poor me! I cried my eyes out but all to no avail I couldn’t find my way to the house nor track back my way to my Aunt’s house.

My aunty became worried and searched for me in every nook and cranny of our school and street. She later went to a television station and put up an advert searching for her lost niece.

I slept in a shop beside the road that night. It was while I was wandering around the street that morning and totally famished that I pull at the sleeve of a lady going her way to beg for food and alas! She turns out to be my class-teacher, Miss Kajola.

She carried me with joy and tears in her eyes and headed straight to my aunty. My aunty on sighting me couldn’t contain her rage. She furiously took me to a foster home and practically dumped me there.

CHAPTER FOUR

Our lady's Children home was situated in the city of Lagos. I was put in the care of the nuns in-charge of the Orphanage by my Aunt.

Ever-lively Evelyn resigned into her shell as this was totally strange from the lives I have been experiencing before; even life with my strict Aunt was even free compare to the life in the orphanage. We have to always follow rules in all we did. What infuriated me most was the fact that we were mandated to always attend all kinds of Mass services ranging from different times in the Chapel as the orphanage was owned by a Catholic church and I had never been religious throughout my stay with my parents and Aunt.

I resigned to faith as time goes on and I found out that life in there was not that bad and it wasn't the end of life. I became the Evelyn of old with my charming and jovial nature which even the nuns could not resist as it endear me to most of them.

We were allowed to always go to a relative in the december period, and I use to used the opportunity to visited my old teacher, Miss Kajola(now Mrs Kolawole). Her husband and her junior brother always made sure that my brief stay was full of fun and enjoyable. I noticed that Tumininu her brother was always fond of me although he was two years older than me.

My Aunt visited me only once when my the death of my Dad clocked ten years![i]

Chris used his pink coloured handkerchief to wiped a strain of tears from his left eye, something that haven't occurred for the past twenty years.

Evelyn continues her story....

Our education in the orphanage was sponsored by the donations from the philanthropist in the society and the catholic churches nationwide, in addition; each of us was given the opportunity of learning a handiwork from the nuns. I took up computer engineering and also learn to use the computer effectively in word processing and graphic design applications.

It was a custom in those days to release us into the 'World' on our eighteenth birthday. I was now over seventeen years of age; I have come of age of maturation, I now had a full formed robust and tender br'east, an oblong face and long hair to complete my beauty. (Funto always joked that I took after my mum which I always take as a flatter because she was a paragon of beauty).

On my eighteenth birthday, I was released into the 'world'. The reverend Mother called me early in the morning and admonished me to eschew all forms of behaviour that may tarnish my image and the orphanage. I went back to my room and pack my belongings and amid tears and pain I said goodbye to my friends and the nuns in the orphanage where I had known to be my home for over a decade.

I headed straight to Mrs Kolawole's house as she was the only person I could pointed to as my relative. Her husband did all he could to secured me a job and fortunately he secured one for me in a bank as their computer analyst as I had completed my national diploma in computer science in a polytechnic at the expense of the Orphanage.

I was to resumed the following morning into the bank job which I did with my utmost joy and gladness.
