Jonathan not fighting corruption – Ex-ICPC chair

A former Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, Justice Mustapha Akanbi and the Chairman, Anti-Corruption Commission, Nigerian Bar Association, Mallam Yusuf Ali (SAN) have said that the President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration is not serious in the fight against corruption.
The two decried the increasing rate of corruption in the country, saying nothing tangible and substantial was being done to address the trend.
They spoke in interviews with journalists on the sidelines of the public lecture on “Corruption – the bane of our society,” organised by the Amicus International Club in Ilorin , the Kwara State captal, on Tuesday.

Akanbi, who is a former President of the Court of Appeal said corruption, kidnapping and other societal ills were on the increase in the country and that government institutions and the judiciary were not helping in curbing corruption.
Akanbi said, “Honestly, I do not see what is being done about corruption now. I ask myself these questions: Does it mean that all the governors are corruption-free? Does it mean all the legislators are corruption-free? Does it mean the judiciary is corruption free? We know that it is happening but people are not being arrested, no action is being taken and the end result is that people accept bribe with impunity now.
“At least, if they had taken few people to court, we would have known that something is being done. There is a general lull and the fight against corruption has gone down completely.

“Now, when you look at many people wanting to be governors, is it because they want to serve their people or that they want to go and chop? It is apparent that many of them want to enrich themselves because they know that when you go there you make money and become wealthy, ditto going to the legislature. Yet people are suffering; there is no development. Corruption, kidnapping and other ills of the society have gone on the ascendency.
“Honestly, in case of the governors, who have been arrested? We know about Oduahgate and the billions of naira that Sanusi alleged was missing. The terrible thing is that the judiciary is not helping.

“The indices are that the moments are dark, the clouds have thickened, corruption is escalating.”
Ali said that Jonathan’s administration was not fighting corruption at all and urged Nigerians to know that corruption makes all the citizens poorer in the short and long run.

He said, “I have said this long time ago, there is no drive against corruption by the current government and that is quite obvious because the President believes that there is no corruption in Nigeria. He believes that what is going on is petty stealing.
“So, if he doesn’t believe there is corruption, you can’t hold him for not driving any anti-corruption war. If somebody doesn’t believe there is a problem then he would not be obliged to look for solution.”

We already know this fact. Only the corrupt and those blinded by bigotry have refused to see it.

The four sets of people that can vote for PDP according to Prof. Wole Soyinka comes to mind here:

(1) Those who are intellectually blind, - The unwise ones

(2) those who are blinded by ethnicity, - The bigots

(3) those who are blinded by corruption and therefore afraid of the unknown, should power change hands, - The corrupt ones

(4) those who are suffering from a combination of the above terminal sicknesses"

TANoids in the house, please choose which one you belong.

Akanbi's record as ICPC chair is there for the world to see. Let him tell us how many convictions he secured during his time at the ICPC.

All we heard from him then was; 'more money, no money. ICPC is starved of cash!'

He should have learnt a thing or two from Nuhu Ribadu, whose commission was limited in jurisdiction to only economic crimes.

How much could he have achieved without the presidency bringing cases of corruption to his attention?

As usual, attack the messenger and ignore the message which is correct in its entirety. I hope you know that what you do here is something honourable and/or upright men would never do.

Better to say nothing than deploy the shameful and condemnable tactics of attacking the messenger alone with the intention of diverting attention away from the 100% correct message.

@Topic.

Even in regards to corruption alone, minus everything else, GEJ deserves to be voted out. Pervasive corruption will always stifle the development and growth of any nation. Without tackling corruption, leadership effort in Nigeria simply resembles the futile attempt to gather water with a highly porous basket.

I am yet to see you condemn Buhari for asking his people to kill corpers and other Nigerians after he lost woefully to GEJ in the 2011 general elections. We know you are a lackey of the messenger, but, at least, attack the message and forget the messenger.

No man that has respect for life would condone that act.

According to Transparency international, Under Jonathan Nigerian in I year we went from 31th most corrupt country to 39th. 8steps forward

What happened? Was there actually a successful fight against corruption or did other countries just become more corrupt.
Well, this is what happened.

There are two sides to the fight. Prevention and punishment . while little has been seen regarding punishment, a lot has been done to prevent corruption. from strict banking rules, to transparent contract award and execution to more professional procurement processes and proper accounting processes. CBN, Ministry of finance and other government agencies have improved their processes to a good extent.
Is 39th most corrupt nation worth celebrating? Not at all. but Rome was not built in a day as they say.

The sad part is that all this means nothing to the Public. proper record keeping is no news. they want someone to be hanged. they want a 'big' man to be humiliated. the people want blood. and in this regard, the government gave them nothing. No politician in jail. no body to ridicule. So all the good behind the scene work has no political value. OBJ administration had terrible processes. Corruption was huge, but he gave the public the ''punishment'' they craved. Even if it was mainly visited on his political opponents, the people loved it.
This government has actually done a lot, but punishment is the only way to show you are fighting corruption. They simply did not ''show working'', thereby exposing itself to the accusation of tolerating corruption. Don't just work, be seen to be working. Its also called ''eye service''.

- A.C

He is also the first Nigerian president to grant complete independence to the EFCC.

Government does have a part to play in the fight against corruption. But truth be told, if the people are not ready to change their ways, nothing will change much.
We have a flawed value system that will not be corrected by just sending people to jail. Waiting for one man (whoever it is) to come and totally stamp out corruption is unrealistic.
Everybody has a role to play in the fight against corruption and it all starts with a change of values to embrace honesty and transparent dealings with one another.

It's not enough to rant and build momentum online, when Febuary arrives we all have a patriotic/ civic duty of changing the direction our dear nation is heading by voting out this corrupt and irresponsible government..

If the opportunity avails itself here, there is no question, no iota of doubt or sentimental bias as to who I am proudly voting for..

Jonathan and his corrupt cronies should start seeking asylum in foreign lands if they want to be guaranteed freedom and peace of mind, because even the famous Otueke would reject it's own Dog
