biafrandream:the guy makes no sense..people are nit living much in their villages due to mordern economic issues of trying to 'live better life' and at times the belief that the grass is greener on the other side..eliminate snakes?part of the ecological system?are you willing to also eliminate all the rats and frogs that these snakes help to reduce their population?replace them with antelopes? From where?when you say antelopes do you mean local variety like mgbada that prefers thick vegetation to open grasslands or do you mean the Sudan or sahel savanah types that probably would not survive out tropical rain forest region?why these type of thinking?have all the diamond back rattlesnakes being eliminated from rural Texas and surroundings before Americans settled there?would Americans even think of it ?where are there conservation efforts to maintain and increase numbers of endangered or decreasing numbers of animal species no matter how deadly and poisonous they are?I wonder where you get the idea that that is what oyibos did but I can tell you oyibos are regretting some past actions they did... 1 Like |

biafrandream: I don't think the guy was making any sense suggesting the demolition of villages. It is like saying bleach everyone's skin so that we all look white and you will stop racism. Sometimes children should be ignored.A good 40-50% of Nigerians still live in the rural areas. Most of the retired teachers that taught you in primary and secondary schools have left Enugu and returned to their country homes in order not to pay rent in the city, when they have no job there. Our cities are already crowded due to years of neglect, if you demolish the villages, where will you put the sudden 40-50% jump in the city's population? He would soon advise that we should create firing squad parties of soldiers to execute all of them so that they won't go and crowd the cities further. What we need is more infrastructure, roads, electricity, small scale industries in the villages to help people live there comfortably. That is why i am frustrated that the new Enugu-PH train isn't stopping at the various rural stations. If they did, people can stay in their villages and smoke fish, plant yams, cocoyam, vegetables, cashews and then put them on a train and supply PH and Enugu, without needing to live there and ride okada or become an agbero or even an armed robber just to have a job in the city. 2 Likes |

The village just needs some attention, that's all. Even the bushy areas, they can be maintained. I also dont agree with the killing of snakes etc and the perception that oyibo people kill all snakes and other 'nasties' is actually untrue. In Australia, they have many deadly snakes and spiders, they dont just kill them all. They educate people on how to live with them. I think many Nigerians don't appreciate delicate balance that exists within nature. Even in the UK and around the world, the same oyibo people are actively promoting the protection and promotion of bees. Not because of honey, but because of what they have discovered about what this stinging insect actually performs in relation to the rest of nature, including humans. Oyibo have their forests (bushy areas) as well as fields, many of which are actually protected by law. I am actually in the Lake District in Cumbria now. The vast majority is actually declared a national park, to protect it. This includes forest. Not everywhere should look like a town. There must be places that are kept closest to their natural states. IMHO both in the village and city, there should be a program for tree/flower planting and maintenance. |

spyder880:I tire for that kind thinking...improving agricultural techniques, comprehensive construction of access road to,within and fro these villages, presence of basic amenites like electricity and water are the things that would bounce some dormant villages to life..my village was quite notorious for no light until last yr when all the bad transformers were changed and new ones installed and almost automatically the economic activities in the village bounced back to life...access roads had never been a problem and it helped the situation....i laugh at the thought of levelling villages and relocating them to towns I mean like the way red Indians were done some centuries back?which villagers especially in the se would tolerate that?as for killing snakes and replacing them with antelopes smh. |

spyder880: centje: He is the product of copying oyibo people blindly. Nigerians visit abroad the first time and they think the white-man just built his country yesterday and therefore want the entire Nigeria demolished and built up immediately within one week! The white-men had villages worse than our own now. In the 1600-1800, their villages were godforsaken places. As they continued to develop and get richer, they improved infrastructure, got telephones and hospitals and did landscaping with trees to make villages become suburbs of cities. The dude obviously didn't know that history. 1 Like |

Sandd: I totally disagree with you. I understand there sometimes need to be intervention by humans, which happens anyway. However I think you have a vision for nature that is totally unnatural. Maybe your more of a city guy, so maybe you will find it difficult to interact with nature without attempting to dominate it. Forests occur naturally. Or do you think they were planted by the white man in their country? Forests are a product of natures design and are home to many creatures. In Nigeria, there are quite a few bird species that are native to us and can not be found elsewhere. Even when forest fires are used to clear land, nature is what grows it back most times and it is not humans that go along, with our self imposed vision of perfection to replenish it by planting each seed 10cm apart lol. Your Obudu pics and comments are makng me suspect that you are actually joking a small bit. You are using a resort swimming pool to prove what point? Obudu Ranch is a resort, nestled in nature. Yes I agree there needs to be work on roads and infrastructure, but nature is what makes Obudu beautiful, or are you suggesting all those hills, valleys, streams of Obudu are a product of human interaction.....really? But if you want to clear your village, no worries. 3 Likes |

londoner: Please how many snakes or scorpions have you seen on the road or in the woods, since you started living in England? If have not seen one before, ask yourself why. Granted that here in England, people keep snakes in their homes, but it is by choice and the owners take proper care of them. I grew up in the village and I can tell you how many times I had scorpion sting while growing up there. I know a lot of victims of snake bite as well. If we want to embrace modernity, it should be in all it's entirety. We cannot accept everything that civilization has to offer and not think of improving on our environment. The white people especially here in the UK move freely in the woods or forest because they are not afraid of being bitten by any dangerous reptile. Can you comfortably move around the bushes in our villages without seeing all manner of snakes. The answer is no. Our environment needs to be cleaned up and if you want snake, you can keep them in your house or in the zoo, that's what people do here in the UK. By cleaning up our villages, I don't mean falling all the trees or paving all the roads but at least the government should help in making our villages properly maintained and rid it of dangerous snakes. It's all about sustainability. 1 Like |

biafrandream: I have never been bitten by snakes in any of the villages I have stayed in Nigeria. Snakes are the very least of my worries when going to anyway in the village. I have seen scorpions in my house in the city instead. Maybe we need to kill all the scorpions in the city first 3 Likes |

I have watched National Geographic channels and Animal planet where monkeys invade cities and steal fruits and goods from homes in foreign countries, and they have not killed all the monkeys, if the same thing happens in Enugu, people will shout "kill the whole monkeys to make the place good" Is this not a case of double standards? 4 Likes |

biafrandream: @ the bolded, I live in the United States and i have seen many snakes in peoples' yards and houses.I have also witnessed people running away from snakes in a public park more than twice. In the hospital where i work, we have treated people with anti-snake venom serum for snake bites in the park. Now, unless you want to say England is more developed than the United states. In that case, I will not touch that side because English people themselves, not immigrants to their land, know the truth. Now, i agree with you about the need to have home pest control and kill dangerous snakes because i have seen roaches even in the houses of the very wealthy. Not to say it doesn't exist in the USA either. Just in a smaller scale. 2 Likes |
