Happy new year to all Nairalanders, we hope for plenty naira in our pockets this new year... Today is a holiday, and I want to write an article on this our continent Africa through our dear country Nigeria. If you ask, " What's our problem in Africa" most people will say, oh, the Europeans, oh this oh that... The point is that we as Africans never take blame on ourselves. Yes, we were enslaved, but has any body asked the question, why were we enslaved, what were the factors that the Europeans saw that got us enslaved? We were gullible, as Africans, as Nigerians, we were gullible in the past... Take for example, the Europeans came and deceived us, I mean who are the kind of people that can be deceived, that can be found gullible at any point in time? Yes, we are the ones, we Africans.. Where does all these begin from? We are our problems, everyone in Africa.. The truth is, as an African, how do we see ourselves? Who are we to the world? Are we really inferior to the whites? What are we capable of doing? Are we risk takers like the whites? Naturally, we have a particular perception about ourselves, "We come to life to enjoy whatever life has to offer us, and when we are old, we start seeking respect and later die, and the cycle continues like that", but who are the whites? The whites are the bossy people, who can treat the blacks like animals, who can enslave the blacks, why? Because we see them as "LIFE", and we want to enjoy whatever they have for us. Why do blacks in the diaspora succeed? This is what I call the average success, I'm going to use myself as an example now.... "When I was young, probably in my primary school days, I had this uncle who was staying in the United Kingdom, and to be honest, I saw him as a god, even as a small child, why? 1. I saw him as someone who could provide almost anything I request for.. 2. I saw him as someone who was closer to everything "oyinbo" I use to see on T.V then ... I would request for things like playstation, psps, R.C planes[Cos I'm an aviation freak] and all sorts, this things where not available then like they are now in Nigeria.. My parents where rich, we where living comfortably but this my god must be worshipped.... That's the African mind.., anybody that we see who is at an higher level than us is seen as a demi-god.... Your boss for instance, can do and un-do, our Governors e.t.c and this is why when any of us, I mean any Afrcian who has the opportunity to be in power, almost if not completely misuses the power.. It must be remembered that the Europeans that were said to have enslaved us and caused all our problems, where actually the same people who taught us THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PROBLEMS AND SOLUTIONS because we have always acted as dummies.... Nigeria for example, do you know that the active rail lines routes in Nigeria today where actually built by the Europeans? Whatever good that have come out of any African country have always had a "White" involvement? Who brought education? Who invented the airplanes? Who brought about the currency?.... Let's quickly look at the top 10 inventions that have changed the world we live in today... |

10. The Plow - for Agriculture: Now looking at this invention, we can recall that this people actually enslaved us so we could make agricultural production faster, more efficient, and what did we do? We accepted the challenge to work, work and till the land and serve our gods... What did the Europeans do? They invented the Plow. This means, we who were actually suffering did not even think of how we can make our work easier, instead, we enjoyed the process, at least we were in a foreign land... with accents flowing here and there... 9. The Wheel - for Movement: The wheel made the transportation of goods much faster and more efficient, especially when affixed to horse-drawn chariots and carts. However, if it had been used only for transportation, the wheel wouldn't have been as much of a world-changer as it was. In fact, a lack of quality roads limited its usefulness in this regard for thousands of years. Meanwhile, we actually enjoyed carrying those loads on our bare heads! 8. The Printing Press : The printing press allowed enormous quantities of information to be recorded and spread throughout the world. Books had previously been items only the extremely rich could afford, but mass production brought the price down tremendously. The printing press is probably responsible for many other inventions, but in a more subtle way than the wheel. The diffusion of knowledge it created gave billions of humans the education they needed to create their own inventions in the centuries since. 7. Refrigeration : The ability to keep food cold for prolonged periods (and even during shipping, once refrigerated trucks were developed) drastically changed the food production industry and the eating habits of people around the world. Now, we have easy access to fresh meats and dairy products even in the hottest summer months, and we're no longer tied to the expense of harvesting and shipping natural ice -- which never could have kept pace with the world's growing population in any case. 6. Communication : These developments in communications technology effectively shrank the world. In the span of about 120 years, we went from a world where it might take weeks to hear news from across the country to one where we can watch events occurring on the other side of the globe as they happen. The advent of mass communications put more information within our grasp and altered how we interact with each other. 5. Steam Engine : While the steam engine has been eclipsed by electric and internal combustion engines in the areas of transport and factory power, they're still incredibly important. Most power plants in the world actually generate electricity using steam turbines, whether the steam is heated by burning coal, natural gas or a nuclear reactor. 4. Automobile : The automobile's effect on commerce, society and culture is hard to overestimate. Most of us can jump in our car and go wherever we want whenever we want, effectively expanding the size of any community to the distance we're willing to drive to shop or visit friends. Our cities are largely designed and built around automobile access, with paved roads and parking lots taking up huge amounts of space and a big chunk of our governments' budgets. The auto industry has fueled enormous economic growth worldwide, but it's also generated a lot of pollution. 3. Light bulb : You might think the light bulb changed the world by allowing people to work at night or in dark places (it did, to some extent), but we already had relatively cheap and efficient gas lamps and other light sources at the time. It was actually the infrastructure that was built to provide electricity to every home and business that changed the world. Today, our world is filled with powered devices than we can plug in pretty much anywhere. We have the light bulb to thank for it. 2. Computer : If we only examine these grandiose uses of computers, we overlook how much we rely on them from day to day. Computers let us store vast amounts of information and retrieve a given piece of it almost instantly. Many of the things we take for granted in the world wouldn't function without computers, from cars to power plants to phones. 1. Internet : The Internet is such a powerful invention that we've probably only begun to see the effects it will have on the world. The ability to diffuse and recombine information with such efficiency could accelerate the rate at which further world-changing inventions are created. At the same time, some fear that our ability to communicate, work, play and do business via the Internet breaks down our ties to local communities and causes us to become socially isolated. Like any invention, the good or ill it accomplishes will come from how we choose to use it. Now the question is what have we invented to change the world? Nothing, because we didn't invent corruption, or mismanagement of funds, everything came from the white people, because technically, we haven't started living our own lives as independent states and people but instead, we look up to "our ogas at the top", we are silent beings, who only complain underneath and keep our mouths shut outside. |

In conclusion, if you google now at the top 10 inventions that are going to change the world in the future, you'll see them there, ranging from faster transportation systems, [Imagine boarding a plane in Lagos and landing at Heathrow in 45mins], That's the future, They're looking at better communication systems, better health care services, better government principles, and all sorts, what are we looking at in the future, Africa? WE ARE LOOKING AT WHAT THEY ARE UP TO, AND I'M LOOKING Your comments and suggestions are wanted and let's argue.. Thank you for your time! THIS ARTICLE WAS WRITTEN BY ME. We invented the spear, bow and arrow, houses, communities, probably the first domestication of animals, farming (probably) and we invented Inventing. If it was'nt for the innovative spirit of the first humans in Africa which enabled our survival, Humans would not exist in the world today. Humanity owes its existence to Africans. They were the first thinkers and solvers of problems (inventors) -this ability to invent is recognized as one of the chief qualities that separate humans from beasts ((relatively) for chimps and birds use tools, we know) . This ability is in the genetic makeup of all Humans alive today. Setting aside the controversies around race, today, Europeans lead the way in inventions; tomorrow, who knows? The story of the human creature has not ended, it goes on. Forgot to add that we also invented language |

Well, if we go back into ancient times, we would see that there was never a Europe, Everything was all about Africa, and nothing else, so that means, all of us where actually black before, and this is a proven fact, but amongst those black people, where some other black people who felt the need to Explore, and they went on, and on, because they were risk takers, and where explorers who seek inventions on how to make the world a better place for them... Meanwhile, some "Africans" where left, and, it is good to know that "WE ARE THOSE AFRICANS", the other ones that left are the white people, who after they went where faced by loads of challenges including weather, which turned their skin colour to white, so it is fair to say we all began together, but then as time went on, the men had to be separated from the boys, and that's the case we are in now... So, all the inventions you where talking about, where done by everybody, but some people didn't continue the invention, while some did, and are still doing............................................... |

You are right, we are our own problem, and by that our own saviour also. This is history, your degree should be a testament to the knowledge of this information. However you cannot say the African has no inventions to his name. I quote this from a nairalander's post a while ago. ROSSIKE: |

Dexpendable, you may not be observant enough. Your twist, while interesting, has its flaws, and is tortured. Those people hell bent on perpetrating the false notions of white racial superiority informed by resent (in the scale of human time scale on earth) technological innovations have long set up for themselves a robust counter to the argument that i put, having recognized this argument as a simple yet powerful counter to their cosy belief sets. They have yet to play this hand but it is clear that it is their Ace. Here it is: The claim that European and Asians have additional Neanderthal genes but Africans do not - Genius Nevertheless, both this elegant argument-in-waiting and yours are desperate for they do not convincingly detract from the simply truth that humans are all inherently inventive and there are simply highs and lows in the chart of human evolution nothing is set in stone. In the words of our Nigerian forbears: Today, na you; Tomorrow, na me. |

dexpendable:Please edit the title of the post. There is nothing Dark about the continent of Africa. Africans must desist from perpetuating the derogatory terms manufactured by idiotic Europeans. |

Duru1:Africa is like an active volcano waiting to erupt violently. At the moment,it is quite dark and the people are tightly blindfolded. Everything happens around them, yet they can't see. Like magic. |
| Re: Africa, The Dark Continent! by dexpendable(op): 6:09pm On Jan 01, 2015 |
Litmus:Well, what I was trying to say simply was that, those genes that you're talking about, where at a point equal, and everyone was equal, everyone was black and everyone was in Africa, but then, at a point, some out of those who were amongst the "everyone", decided that they needed to explore, leave where they where and see what's beyond them... They went out to Europe as black people, from Africa, with the same genes, of the ones who were still in Africa, but who have decided to do nothing on improving their own genes........ Your arguments about we developing language, and all sorts, where stuffs that where developed by "EVERYBODY", we where still together when all this happened, if you disagree with that, then you've to tell me what else we've invented apart from all those of the ancient past... But if you agree, you'll understand that those inventions where actually done when everybody was still black, and everybody was still in Africa, before some of those Africans decided to explore.... We were all Africans! |
| Re: Africa, The Dark Continent! by dexpendable(op): 6:12pm On Jan 01, 2015 |
Duru1:You see brother, when you say "A dark continent", That title was actually given to us by the Europeans, even before, they back for exploration and colonizations.... But then, are we a black continent? Or are we not? We've to answer ourselves..... Historically, we were not a black continent.... Presently, we are a black continent.... |

dexpendable:The point is, the ability to create things in order to overcome certain obstacles, is a part of the human makeup. No one has a monopoly on inve3nting things, circumstances dictate. While Europeans were inventing all the stuff for which they will no let us rest, Africans wer patering away on the sideline, inventing their little more modern stuff such as baskets for trapping fishes, canoes for traveling and sometimes ferrying huge tree trunks and so on. They invented musical instruments and improved upon house buildings after thire own fashion. |

No one race has a monopoly on inventing things, circumstances dictate. They invented musical instruments and improved upon house buildings after their own fashion. The up-short being the were inventing -small or large, relativity sophisticated or relatively primitive, they were inventing. They didn't give names to their inventions thereby establishing the trick of owning a thing simply by naming it. In time, Africans will invent the relatively sophisticated stuff - maybe they are right now, who know, but since the Whites have laid claim to all things by naming them, contemporary black inventors contributions may be wasted. If Africans were in the habit of claiming ownership of things through naming, Africans would claim they invented weapons (all modern weapons such as tanks and rockets are merely improvements ), Shipping, Fishing implements, Housing, Games, Story telling etc. |

dexpendable:You don't know what you're talking about. White people existed in Europe, living in primitive ignorance and illiteracy, holed up in caves, when blacks were building the pyramids of Egypt and Sudan, building mighty cities with huge temples in Thebes, Kerma, and Kush, advancing medicine, astronomy, mathematics, philosophy, architecture and economics. The white race emerged around 45,000 years ago. The advances made by black Africans, and which the world is benefitting immensely from today, are dated to less than 5,000 BC at the earliest. So it is utterly wrong to say they were no whites when blacks were the leading race on the planet. There were whites, and there were Indians, Chinese etc. The blacks were the leading race on earth because they were inventive, sharp, intelligent, and ambitious. Also, the premise on which you placed your entire write-up was false, biased and antagonistic. You claimed: ''If you ask, " What's our problem in Africa" most people will say, oh, the Europeans, oh this oh that... The point is that we as Africans never take blame on ourselves.'' THAT CLAIM IS A CERTIFIABLE LIE. You're guilty of giving a dog a bad name in order to hang it. The vast majority of Nigerians and Africans, when you ask them what ''our problem is'', do NOT start complaining about ''the Europeans''. They blame their fellow Africans, their leaders, their political system etc. So the rest of your article is really not worth the read on account of your initial falsehood. I personally think you have a terrible racial inferiority complex which you need to get rid of prior to discussing these issues. |

And it's like you all are getting the argument wrong. My point is everybody originated from Africa, along the line, some of those people decided to explore and check what was beyond them, they where the people that later became "WHITE"... And if you're arguing that we the native blacks actually where the one who started inventing, then why did we stop inventing, then who are the white people exactly? Please do find out! |
| Re: Africa, The Dark Continent! by Litmus: 10:46pm On Jan 04, 2015 |
dexpendable:You're also misunderstanding. They didn't stop inventing. The canoes, pots, baskets, musical instruments for instance were invented after, as you say, all were Africans. These things and all those pointed out by ROSSIKE were invented long after the human race diversified having left Africa. The Africans left behind invented them in relatively recent times. I'm sorry you overlooked the point about labeling. It's an interesting one to consider for it is related to the modular way Inventing has increasingly become and which is both beneficial to humanity and undermining of African inventors in a way. I'll give you an example. Say, a Nigerian called Tunde invented a machine capable of nullifying gravity. Tunde would have in fact invented one of the most important things in the entire history of humanity. It would gain him a Nobel prize. Nigerians would be so proud, eventually Nigerian would say Nigerians are the smartest human in the world. The rest of the world that celebrated this invention would at this point begin to be miffed. Soon, intellectuals of the kind that write the sort of books that made you ask the questions you have will say that the null gravity machine invented by Tunde wasn't invented by Tunde. Why? Well, because, they would argue, what did Tunde use to invent his Null gravity machine? He used, coils invented by some white guy, he used chips invented by some white guy, he used, plastics invented by some white guy, he used this and that invented by some white people and consequently Tunde only put together parts invented by others to create this Null gravity Machine. This sort of dilemma probably happens all the time to contemporary black inventors which is why they're never known. Of course, if they create something as world changing as anti gravity machine they'll be known, i used the extreme for illustrative purposes. |

You're on point brother. it's still boiling down to that same thing of we been ridiculed. .. we are more like slaves to the world.. Look at this illustration.. You've a househelp and she stays home every time, let's imagine you run on generators most of the time and this girl having spent a long time in the house develops something out of boredom to reduce fuel consumption.. if at all her invention becomes a little bit popular, you're master would come out and say nooooo... "she only coupled what YOU already had inside the house". Now she can't argue because you're the master and whatever you say goes... The house is the whole world the slave is the blacks the master is the whites. Do you decode? |
| Re: Africa, The Dark Continent! by Litmus: 2:13am On Jan 05, 2015 |
dexpendable:Don't you see, just as the whites can make these claims so too can Africans for we are the origin of many things. From the African dug-out came the canoe; from the canoe came the ships just as Tunde's fictitious null gravity machine may owe its existence to a raft of others. Today, the are truly no single inventors if you're to look at it academically. Therefor it makes no true sense, if we're fare, to suggest whites invented and Africans did not. Inventions evolve from the works of many people of all races throughout the ages. The PC did not begin with the Babbage its origin dates to the advent of mathematics. |

Litmus:Do you understand me at all? I didn't say Africans didn't invent anything. All I said was the time when Africans were inventing, that was the period the NOW WHITES were still in Africa. And I'm taking a wide guess that they were responsible for those inventions even though they where still blacks when all these took place. It was their journey for exploration into the unknown that made turned their skin colours to white.. do you understand? This is just pure fact. |
