After a bit of drama at the first "bodyshop" this arvo, I managed to prise my truck from their grip. It seemed all they wanted to do was frustrate myself and the recovery guy. The lid was meant to be bolted on BEFORE I got there, and of course, it wasn't.

More about that shambles of a shop later, so HPOC members in the area know where NOT to take their treasured rigs.

My rig is now in good hands, in a smaller shop that has come highly recommended. Their work speaks plenty, and the 3 paint finisher outfits in Hayes have only good things to say about them. I only wish I'd mentioned the first mob to local tradesmen, I would have been wiser, richer and would have saved myself a lot of aggravation and frustration.

Still, it's onwards and outwards. On a different note, I have made up my mind with regards to some sweet hoops and rubber. I'll keep you ladies and gents posted. smiley

After looking at various wheels, I have decided to go for Beadlocks by Method Racing Wheels. These are a North Ametican brand, and are specific 4x4 trucks and SUV's.

I am going with 8"x16" with 285/75x16 BF Goodrich All Terrain rubber. This dimension gives me a 33" tyre.

This is the part that I'm waiting for.

I'm sure you didn't pluck that 33" radius out of thin air and must have calculated axle and FD ratio.

I'll sit front and center when you are ready to share any calculations grin

Grille dilemma!

I originally purchased a chrome-effect Hilux grille, then later discovered it was the 2-bar version, which was generally fitted as standard to 2WD models.

I also purchased another chrome-effect grille, not a Toyota item though. I opted for the Predator grille. I have been looking at both, and am not 100% sure which one to fit! Opinions are welcome. smiley

The 2-bar grille would give the front end more width, like the new 4Runner, while the other one would make it somehow look like a BMW X5. I think i prefer the X5 look.

But i think you should hold each one up against the front of the car and look at them from a distance. It would give you a better perspective.
Re: Siena's MK5 Toyota Hilux Customisation Project - "Apple Candy". by Nobody: 10:52pm On Nov 05, 2014
The BMW look alike grille to give the car a different facebeat.
Re: Siena's MK5 Toyota Hilux Customisation Project - "Apple Candy". by lungwun(m): 6:50am On Nov 06, 2014
What you guys see as a BMW look alike grill, I see as a a slightly modified Nissan grill.

For that reason alone, I would recommend the Toyota 2 bar grille.
Re: Siena's MK5 Toyota Hilux Customisation Project - "Apple Candy". by mastro: 8:08am On Nov 06, 2014
The two bar, it makes the car look like a toyota, IMO when modifying a car, the person seeing it for the first time should think WOW why didn't the manufacturer do that, so make it to look like a Toyota

Huh? You lost me here.

The 2-bar grille IS a Toyota grille. So no one would be wondering why the manufacturer didn't do that. Because it's standard on a Hilux.

The two bar grille looks more exciting IMO.. that other grille is just there joor... forget all that BMW talk.. what looks good on a toyota might not look good on a Bmw..
The 2 bar grille will give your hilux a 'sophisticated customised toyota' kinda look..

It can't look customised with the 2-bar grille, seeing as it's standard fitment on a Toyota Hilux.

It IS a standard fitting on all toyota hilux, but I don't think I've seen it on that particular model... (correct me if I'm wrong).. it seems it's a more recent addition to the toyota hilux.. or is that what came with that particular hilux?
Pardon my ignorance, but if you fit a 2014 toyota tarcoma grille on a 1996 model toyota tarcoma, doesn't that qualify has 'customising'? grin

One picture that I have been longing to see is the truck with the fender flares attached.
Is any available? With or without paint.

Thanks

For some reason, the first (aftermarket) grille reminds me of the awful chrome bits folks here in Ghana stick all over their cars, from on the wheel wells to the bumpers etc etc. It looks a bit........ummm... cheap-ish. For that reason alone, i'd go for the second grill....The second (stock) grille, in my opinion also alludes of some healthy road presence.
Re: Siena's MK5 Toyota Hilux Customisation Project - "Apple Candy". by Nobody: 5:06pm On Nov 06, 2014
Stick to the standard toyota issue twin bar chrome grille.

this thread has just been there.. Ha! been following for like two years now yet. next year might be us still deciding for a gearbox.
as for the grille, bro the beamer could have made sense if the division on the grille was two, instead of four as am seeing.

I haven't got any pictures with the fender flares fitted, as I had to move my truck to another shop. The previous shop was a waste of time. They had my truck for 19 weeks, and achieved nothing but a mess. The saga has been posted on this same page.

Not long to completion though.

Lol! grin

This grille has always been standard fitment on the Toyota Hilux MK5 (KDN165). It isn't a recent addition. This 2 bar is standard on the 2WD models, while the 4WD got the single bar grille.

I doubt the grille was intended to mimic the kidney grille of a BMW. Just a coincidence it turned out the way it did. Looking at it now, I reckon it looks more like the grille on older model Chrysler / Jeep Cherokee.

Yes I know first shop bungled the job. Was just wondering if you had any "test" pics of the fitted flares during trials for shape and fit.
As it turns out, no.

Still waiting..... angry

Actually...there are pictures of the truck with the fender flares fitted, before it was painted. You'll have to refer back to the rest of the thread.

I got a call from the shop this arvo, whilst still at work.

The truck is being painted tomorrow. Most of the paint the first shop laid down had to be removed, as the finish was so poor and rubbery. Loads of laquer on the front - nearside wing and bonnet were particularly bad, with the excess running to the lowest corners.

The offside sill also had too much paint, so was taken down to the original Toyota white.

I'll be paying the shop a visit tomorrow, so I'll see how she looks.

I've been a bit quiet on my Hilux project thread lately. Due in part to family joint projects (involving bricks and mortar) and just plain old work commitments. And also because with the first "bodyshop's" flop, I didn't want to tempt fate.

I got a call from the shop this morning, around 09:35 hrs, informing me they were going to paint today, and did I want to pop round? You bet I did! They were also gracious enough to allow me to view proceedings in the spray booth / oven.

This is the order in which things went:

Remove paint applied by first "shop".
Flat down original Toyota Hilux White.
Apply barrier coat to truck.
Prime truck.

These were done before Christmas, today things went this way:

Applied covering coat of aluminium silver.
Light flat down with 800 grade pads.
2 coats of Kawasaki Green Pearl Silver basecoat.
3 coats of Kawasaki Green Pearl topcoat.
2 coats of 2K clear lacquer.

Unlike the first shop, every part was painted at the same time. The fender flares were suspended from the mounting holes by wire, the front valence was suspended from the truck in the same way, and the 3 metal strips under the headlamps and grille were temporarily fitted.

I opted to have the original grille painted. This was just the grey section, painted in the same colour as the rest of the truck. The black sections had previously been refreshed in satin black.

The bed is just sitting on the chassis, moved backwards enough to paint between it and the cabin. The lid is being painted on Monday. This shop does NOT flat final paint coats, they simply give it a light double pass with a pad, then a good mop. I'm getting the windscreen guys out in the week, to fit a new front screen. The old one had a couple of chips in it.

I will be putting the truck back together next Saturday, and then driving her home. Next will be wheels.

Lots of pictures being uploaded. They are courtesy of my iPhone 6, so my apologies for the non high resolution quality.
