The director of public relations of the Nigerian Army, Brigadier Olaleye Lajide, has dismissed reports in the Nigerian media claiming that the army could not find academic records of General Muhammadu Buhari (ret.), the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Brigadier Lajide described the reports as false.

The military spokesman made the disclosure while responding to a text message from SaharaReporters seeking clarification about the status of Mr. Buhari’s records. Brigadier Lajide affirmed that the Nigerian Army is in possession of all records of serving, retired and deceased officers since its inception. He added, however, that all military officers are supposed to keep original copies of their certificates.

According to him, in the event where an officer loses his or her original copy of records, the concerned officer must officially apply for copies from the army. He stated that the army responds to such requests in an expeditious manner.

Brigadier Lajide told our correspondent that he was a former director of records at the Nigerian Army headquarters and had seen records of older and retired generals. He added that he was in no doubt that General Buhari’s records were intact.

Brigadier Olaleye insisted that the claim in a major Nigerian newspaper, that the army could not locate Mr. Buhari’s record was untrue.

I never believed for once that someone who joined the army before independence and rose to the rank of major general before becoming head of state and has contested for the position of president for four times will not have certificates. Why do we like playing politics with everything in Nigeria.

Buhari needs to present his certificates period. Enough of these spurious stories! Buhari please present your certificates now or just go home.

Buhari knew since 2011 that a minimum requirement of contesting for presidency is WASCE or GCE but he did nothing all these while. Buhari knew he was supposed to contest the election again in 2015 and should have been prepared. All these stories do not pass the smell test. Throughout last year, he supposedly was aware that the military purportedly has his certificates but he made no effort to retrieve them.

The stories simply do not add up. The fact that he contested three previous times are unavailing to him because he has gotten more than his fair share of lower standards. No more quota system for him. The minimum as required by the constitution is what is needed, no more no less!

Shameless PDP that is so bereft of issues to campaign with despite promising so much

they are only making a big deal about his qualification because during while he was in the military. the Nigeria defense academy did not offer degree program.

Everyone who had a degree in the army went through regular university before a degree program was introduce in late 80's. or early 90's . After finishing regular university. you now go for short service with the army. Anyone academic record with a degree before that time cant be with the army, but most be with the university. Work experience is what I believe buhari may have been talking about.



I believe the army has to teach them that it is two countries.

GMB never swore to any affidavit claiming that his original copies are with the military.People with brains would have understood indirectly that he must have misplaced or lost his original credentials,before referring to the military for confirmation,because the latter must have verified the originals over the years.

A smart General will never swear to an affidavit claiming loss of an OrIginal certificate.Simple reason:He could have misplaced them,not lost them.If he eventually finds them,mischief makers could interpret it as perjury!

It is very unthinkable and totally mischievous to think that a General would not have the necessary qualifications ,when he was even a head of state,the military would have dismissed him since!

What's the difference now between GMB who has photocopies of his certs with the army records and Sambo who claims his were burnt in a house fire?

INEC asked for your certificates and you swore an oath that they were all currently in the possession of the Military with no iota of evidence from the Military body. A former Head of State and the Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress in the 2015 general elections, Maj.Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), has told the Independent National Electoral Commission that his academic qualifications and credentials are with the military.

A visit by journalists to the headquarters of the commission on Monday in Abuja revealed that Buhari’s academic qualifications were not on display, unlike those of other Presidential candidates, including President Goodluck Jonathan of the Peoples Democratic Party.

But in an affidavit, which he deposed to at a High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, he explained that all his certificates were with the Secretary, Military Board.

The affidavit dated November 24, 2014, was stamped and received by INEC on December 18 2014.

“I am the above-named person and deponent to this affidavit therein. All my academic qualifications documents as filled in my presidential form, President APC/001/2015, are currently with the Secretary, Military Board as of the time of presenting this affidavit. The affidavit is made in good faith and for record purpose,” Buhari stated.

The PUNCH had exclusively reported that Vice President Mohammed Namadi Sambo had also told INEC that his Bachelors and Masters’ degree certificates in Architecture from the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, had been consumed by fire.

Sambo, who is the Vice Presidential candidate of the PDP, had made the declaration in the documents he filed with INEC and displayed on the commission’s office in Abuja, even though the details of the fire that consumed the certificates were not given.

Sambo’s papers were received and stamped by the INEC between December 10 and 18, 2014 and validated by two letters from the ABU, a copy of which was obtained by our correspondent.
