Pic 1 Rows and rows of near perfect wood. I actually watched a builders crew picking through them to find perfect ones. The worst ones they discarded was better than 99% of woods that Iv'e seen posted on NL grin

Pic 2 Steel studs. I intend to get very familiar with these

Pic 3 comparing steel and wood studs

Pic 4 Nice dining set - folds flat for shipping.
Same arrangement at B&Q London.

That's another thought I've been having.

Purchasing and shipping from London may be cheaper due to proximity. California is just so damn far away sad

Can you not get good wood in Nigeria or other African nations?

This is a loaded question.

Wood is wood is wood and comes from trees, we have nothing but trees in Nigeria (I won't consider another African nation as the shipping/logistics issues will be the same as getting it from the US, a market that I know).

The problem is finished wood and it's quality. It' sorely lacking here in Nigeria.

Now, I place the blame on the builders/architects that are not promoting alternative building methods. If they did then a cottage industry for the quality of wood that we can get from Lowes/Depot will be available in Nigeria.

Oh it's the same regular size, very big. I just took a small square picture.

It's in Monrovia, California.

LOL! "Do It Herself Workshop". If only our women/ladies can get involved in buildings in Nigeria.
I know quite few that were interested and not leaving everything to Oga "Baba Lagbaja".
The in nairaland, there is Mama GabbyTabby, MisKintz, and few more, but not sure how involved is Sister Texanomaly... but at least we have few, but they are mostly Diasporan ladies.

@CityNG
We will surely be appreciating more pictures of building materials from HD and Lowes as you come across them. Thank you.

its a 9ja thing even lots of our men are not into simple diy. My westindisn friends put me to shame all can paint and can do simple tiling so I have learnt some tiling, plumbing , laying simple garden bricks and painting.

In 9ja tenants are waiting for plumber to clean out their kitchen pipes that they blocked instead of including it in their cleaning routine

Sister texanomaly is big time into DIY. I watch all those home renovation programs on TV. I love that stuff. I am remodeling my bathroom. I scraped the popcorn ceiling. I took the paneling off the walls and put up new sheet rock, taped and floated before texturizing the walls and ceiling. I even bought a machine that blows it on. It's messy but worth it. Then painted. After that I replaced the chipped grout and laid vinyl flooring. Next is crown molding and putting the baseboards and window moldings back on. Can't wait to finish. smiley

One of my hobbies is woodworking. I love power tools! grin

I don't think so. The exchange rate will even everything. The door you buy $10 in US you might get it £10 or more here.

You are quite right Sister Gabby, even the men are not into doing anything themselves... and the reason is because of cheap labor.
Labor charges is what kill us in diaspora, so many of us has to be handy and become a hobbyist.

I actually have a love of DIY.

I could have had this built cheaply but did it myself with left over bits from my house construction.

My two loves are restoring cars and woodworking.

Wow! The shed is really looking good... Yes, you are handy for real.
You got my attention with the auto restoring, I am handy with auto repairs too and I love doing it, but as mentioned earlier arthritis has been dancing Azonto on my bones lately that I cannot do much of those things anymore... keep up the good work.

Re: The N1,830,000 Door by Nobody: 7:07pm On Jan 05, 2015
It was in Texas.

It's 100 square feet.

I'm confident that I can build a 2000 square feet bungalow if only I had access to the materials in Nigeria.

^^^ How about permits from the city, wasn't that required?.

Structures under 100 square feet are not required to have a permit. This was 12 X 10 so it was actually 120 square feet. Jealous neighbor (who always asks me where I get my energy from) promptly turned me into the city.

City Inspector and I had a discussion about difference between heated and unheated space and which is counted towards the square footage. The little patio area there was not counted and got me to 105 or so square feet grin

So you got-off scot free? That is nice of the inspector... some of them will not listen for anything.

Oh yeah.

He said that if it was some shitshack construction he would have had an issue but that the structure is actually overbuilt and sound and so he was okay. It was in a small city of 3,000 or so people though, might have been different in the city.

I agreed with him.. that was a well-built structure right there... I don't think any professional would have done anything better. Good work sir.

There you go. Those fellas are crazy. There are lots of them in NYC. They report anything and everything.

This one you built, if it was nyc, without permits, them go give you bulala (fines) grin . After that, they would order you to demolish everything if the the zone doesn't permits it. Or order you to get permit and legalize it. All these will cost the crap out of your pocket, sir.

Oh I knew and studied the rules for my township first before construction and I knew that the possibility of an inspection exists since the structure was very visible.

I've heard horror stories.

A coworker built his house by mistake 4 feet too close to the property line. The city wanted him to pull it down and rebuild. So he bought the lot next to him and combined it. Ended up being cheaper than demolishing the half built house.

The Inspectors do have a job though, at least they keep us safe in our homes.

I believe in live and let live. Boys must chop. Also, Jack of all trades master of none.

However, I love power tools. Have quite a few black and Deckers in my house. Been used really sparingly.
