Does Water Break The Fast? by elOnuh(m): 7:08am On Jan 17, 2015
Back in the days when i was a catholic, i was led to believe drinking water once or twice during lenth season isn't a break of fast. Now, while in my 21days fasting and prayers, a brother told me ''water does not break the fast'' within a serious discussion.

I don't know if am to believe what he said or not. Please i need serious christians to educate me on this, as well as back it up with scriptural quotes. Thanks.

I really cannot say which is spiritually correct. For me personally, I brush my mouth at 05:30am, then drink half a can of water before 06:00. After that, 'NOTHING' touches my tongue till 6pm.

That's the way I observe fasting and what I believe as real fasting too.

I don't know if this helps explain it in a little way?

It doesn't. However, the main point in fasting should be the glory of the Lord, not just to show our strongwill.

Water doesn't break the fast.

The goal of a bible fast is to afflict the soul and mortify lust and carnality through the help of the Spirit, as you seek God to behold His glory.

Drinking water (only water) during a fast does not nullify that goal. Calories comfort carnal cravings and taste fuel fleshy lust.

Water is tasteless and calorie-less. So it doesn't sabotage the work of a fast on the soul. But anything with calories and/or taste (whether solid or liquid) breaks the fast and converts it to dieting.

As I ♥ to say:

Fasting without prayer is hunger strike; and fasting with anything besides water only is dieting.

So NO, water doesn't break your fast or sabotage its goal.

Hope this helps.

Now as for scriptures;

There are no scriptures that explicitly says drink water or don't drink water when you fast; but such can be implied with care from some scriptures that talked about fasting. E.g.

Jesus was hungry after His forty day fast -not thirsty

Luke 4v2 -Being forty days tempted of the devil. And in those days He did EAT NOTHING: and when they were ended, He afterward HUNGERED.

It says "He did EAT NOTHING" -not drink nothing. And afterward HUNGERED -not thirsted.

Which implied He drank water. If he ate or drank anything with calories He wouldn't be hungry. And if he didn't drink water, He would be thirsty too, not just hungry.

Also;

Matthew 15:32 -Then Jesus called His disciples unto Him, and said, I have compassion on the multitude, because they continue with me now three days, and have NOTHING TO EAT: and I will not send them away FASTING, lest they faint in the way.

Here Jesus equated having nothing to EAT as FASTING; not drink. The people obviously had water to drink for the past three days, coz they were by the sea of galilee.

Matt 15v29 -And Jesus departed from thence, and came NIGH UNTO THE SEA OF GALILEE;....and great multitudes came unto Him.

While it is possible to go on fast without both food and water; as there were people in scripture who did it -Moses, Esther and Nineveh. It is not advisable to go without water for prolonged fasts -like 10 days to 40 days fasts. Its not even possible for that of 40 days, except you're breaking daily.

The only person who ever fasted that long without water was Moses, and its rational to comprehend, considering the fact that He was literally in God's manifest presence; and he was also in the cloud -which is water.

Drinking water while fasting does not nullify your fast. When you are going on a long fasting, water is necessary, it prevents your body from dehydration, it cleanse your cells and gives you Strength

It is dangerous not to drink water during the day when it is hot and you are outside the house and working and I can tell you it could give you problems with the kidney so please drink water.

All this pentecost pastors who tell their followers to fast for 40 days didnot know how bad it is for the health.

I was for a fasting week in a special hotel which is run by nuns and we make a 5 day real fasting only drinking tea and water and praying and than we start with spedial food to break the fasting, but what we lean was always to drink about 3 liter of water.

so please drink water it is better for the healt

On the contrary, prolonged water fast is very healthy for the body. Not only can a healthy, well-nourished human body go forty days on only water; the body is actually designed to need intermitent prolonged fasting; and frequent short fasts.

There are toxins, deep organ defects and cell-level problems that can't be healed or corrected until you've gone without food for atleast 21-days and above.

The body spends about 12 hours digesting food when we eat. Eating twice or thrice a day makes digestion a full-time job for the body; such that it has little time for anything else.

It is when we go on prolonged fast that the body now has the time to focus internally on self-healing, house-cleaning and other corrections.

Infact 10, 21, 30 and 40 day water fasts is now being recommended for healing of deep-seated sicknesses, not to talk of the unavoidable side-benefits of weight loss and detoxification .

That is not to even talk of the spiritual aspect, when done through the help of the Holy Spirit for a God-glorifying reason.

And I'm not just talking from hear-say or eye-read accounts. I'm talking from exprecience. Prolonged fasts are health-enhancing and spirit-empowering.

If in doubt, just google "40 day water fast" or just "water fast" and look up the links that come up.

There is nothing to be scared of about fasting. But make sure you drink atleast 2 litres of water daily; and you rest well.

According to Islamic belief, restraint from food,
water, and undesirable behavior makes a person
more mentally disciplined and less prone to
unhealthy behavior. This is one of the reasons why
they still restrain drinking water (or any kind of
beverage for that matter) during Ramadan
