The goal of a bible fast is to afflict the soul and mortify lust and carnality through the help of the Spirit, as you seek God to behold His glory.

Drinking water (only water) during a fast does not nullify that goal. Calories comfort carnal cravings and taste fuel fleshy lust.

Water is tasteless and calorie-less. So it doesn't sabotage the work of a fast on the soul. But anything with calories and/or taste (whether solid or liquid) breaks the fast and converts it to dieting.

As I ♥ to say:

Fasting without prayer is hunger strike; and fasting with anything besides water only is dieting.

So NO, water doesn't break your fast or sabotage its goal.

Hope this helps.
you are right, not even garri water

it actually depends on the type of the fast.once it is a dry fasting, then water is not involved.

Back in the days when i was a catholic, i was led to believe drinking water once or twice during lenth season isn't a break of fast. Now, while in my 21days fasting and prayers, a brother told me ''water does not break the fast'' within a serious discussion.

I don't know if am to believe what he said or not. Please i need serious christians to educate me on this, as well as back it up with scriptural quotes. Thanks.

It depends on the level of of your sacrifice. If I go for a day or two nothing touches my skin and tongue. But if I'm climbing from 3 to 21 days dry, I will take a little water to keep me going but no taking of bath or brushing of teeth. What matters most is one's level of faith.

Yez
It breaks the fast!
You can keep drinking water for 9months and stay alive
That's not fasting!
When you've decisded to fast, you stay totally away from food and water is food!

To drink water or not to drink water during fasting depends on the definition of the type of fast u want to embark on before commence the fast so that u don't mix it up.There is a fasting u don't drink water nor eat anything till the fasting end(Easter 4:16)and there are fasting u drink water all depend on ur definition of ur fasting or what u want.

Did you read the other posts before arriving at your oblique comment

Well, if you didn't, then i'd suggest you painstakingly do so. And if you did, then it's a case of 'assimilation'.

With your line of argument, it follows therefore that the air we breath is also food since we take it in to maintain life, inu?

Wow!!! U brush b4 time? Hmmm Das interesting. Tnx for d knowledge
Yeah, there's nothing wrong in brushing every morning during the period of our observing fasting. My only opinion is that one needs to be determine not to drink water in the process. I've seen or heard a lot of people saying that they do take water too, but I just thought that the absence of taking water...which will make our system to be dehydrated which even make us to feel the fasting more than been hungary is what the fasting is about. Not taking water punishes the body than not taking a food. My thought sha!

Now as for scriptures;

There are no scriptures that explicitly says drink water when you fast; but such can be implied with care from some scriptures that talked about fasting. E.g.

Jesus was hungry after His forty day fast -not thirsty

Luke 4v2 -Being forty days tempted of the devil. And in those days He did EAT NOTHING: and when they were ended, He afterward HUNGERED.

It says "He did EAT NOTHING" -not drink nothing. And afterward HUNGERED -not thirsted.

Which implied He drank water. If he ate or drank anything with calories He wouldn't be hungry.

Also;

Matthew 15:32 -Then Jesus called His disciples unto Him, and said, I have compassion on the multitude, because they continue with me now three days, and have NOTHING TO EAT: and I will not send them away FASTING, lest they faint in the way.

Here Jesus equated having nothing to EAT as FASTING; not drink. The people obviously had water to drink for the past three days, coz they were by the sea of galilee.

Matt 15v29 -And Jesus departed from thence, and came NIGH UNTO THE SEA OF GALILEE;....and great multitudes came unto Him.

While it is possible to go on fast without both food and water; as there were people in scripture who did it -Moses, Esther and Nineveh. It is not advisable to go without water for prolonged fasts -like 10 days to 40 days fasts. Its not even possible for that of 40 days, except you're breaking daily.

The only person who ever fasted that long without water was Moses, and its rational to comprehend, considering the fact that He was literally in God's manifest presence; and he was also in the cloud -which is water.
thanks I found this helpful to my spiritual life too... God bless you. .. God bless the OP too...

Whether you agree with me or not , water is food and have never come across in the bible where jesus , daniel and other man of God fasted and take water. If you wanna be hot , hot and if you be cold , be. Cold.

Well, from my little understandin. The fasting starts at 12am midnyt and goes thru till 6pm. The drinkin of water is so as not to be dehydrated not to fill ones belly. But it has to be pure water, No Form of mixin or juice.
Except Of Cos ya doing Dry fasting den nthn is suppose to enta ur mouth for the particle period of time you av decided to fast.
Remember to pray while fasting cos without prayin ya jst unda goin a form of religious hunger strike #HeavenOnEarth #Peace

The point is to deny your body/flesh it's pleasure by feeling that pain of being hungry/thirsty. If drinking a bit won't stop that, why not? Everything shouldn't be legalistic for us na.

Water is an element and it carries minerals, minerals are nutrients which help regulate many body functions, and act in nerve responses. Water is also a fluid and a carrier of oxygen which our bodies need. The human body is composed of anywhere from 55% to 78% and sometimes more of water depending on the size of the individual. Water is composed of many molecules attracted to one another. Water has 2 hydrogen molecules to every oxygen molecule, which is why it is called H2O.

Directly or indirectly, you have concluded that if I drink water during fasting, it does not break my fasting. This means if I take of DRINK soft drink or tea or anything that is liquid OR has water and without eating during fasting, NO PROBLEM. Then you do not know the purpose of biblical fasting. I do not have time for now for proper delivery of this question; preparing to go to church. See you later and God bless you!

The essence of fasting is to deprive oneself those joy and comfort that makes ur day, if u drink water while on fast, u hv defiled ur fast, becos water will revive u and give u more strength to carry on, is the same as when u eat....so stay away from water while u fast

Did Jesus drank water when he fasted for 40days and nights.? No! So those of y'all drinking water when fasting y'all have not been fasting.
