As good an idea banning imported goods is, it will give rise to inflation of locally produced goods if efforts are not put in place to produce them massively. Someone should advice GMB that change is a gradual thing!

That is sure, he can't just ban it immediately without making provision. Actually it's a gradual process.

But if Nigeria government is determined, a year is enough to make things right.

And by the way, Nigeria does not import Tomatoes, that is a lie. I stand to be corrected though, with a proof. Just because this old pretentious lying grand pa says so does not mean it is true.

Why are PDP e-fans sweating? What is actually wrong in giving preference to local production? GMB will not just implement the ban without policies in place for local production. Must people criticise?

Buhari just confirmed that GEJ is on the right track, the only difference is that Buhari does not know that change is a gradual thing...you do not ban tomato paste when you do not have enough investments in producing them locally.

OBJ banned rice without having a local modern rice mill and what that singular policy did was to increase corruption because people started smuggling and bribing custom officials and we ended up buying rice for 15k a bag.

Now we have local rice mills and the GEJ presidency has said that it will ban rice importation this year.

There was corruption in the power sector, GEJ has killed corruption in that sector by privatizing it and GMB just confirmed it.

This dude should come to a debate...let us listen to him.

When OBJ banned textile materials without revamping the textile industry, it caused inflation in that sector and corruption was rife.

You do not ban bicycle without having working steel plants...it does not happen anywhere in the sane world.

One thing about GEJ presidency is that he does not care about being politically correct...he just keeps doing what is right like removing subsidy to kill corruption in the sector and make the local production of refined fuel competitive.

Hello everyone!

I woke up to this news of usual political promises from politicians as always. Well, Nigeria imports so many things especially when the focus shifted to oil as our major source of revenue.

However, like they say, you need to know where you're coming from, so you can know where you are before you can tell how well your journey is and the direction. It appears GMB has no knowledge of where we were coming from as a nation, where we're today nor where should we be heading. In actual sense, you do not just ban products outrightly simply because you feel it can be produced locally as that will be very disastrous. Certain government policies and actions can discourage importation of commodities.

Like someone rightly said, increase of import duties and tariffs, waivers to companies that have shown the desire to locally produce these commodities, provision of infrastructures, tax exemptions, access to funds, etc can first set the motion on ground for local production of these commodities and discourage import as it will become cheaper to produce locally than to import.

Now in rice alone, the government has created the enabling environment and put structures in place such that the results are trickling in and we're feeling the impact. Our markets are flooded with home grown, locally milled rice. In phases, the government will outrightly ban importation of rice.

For tomatoes, we produce tomatoes in very large quantities. Same as rice, Dangote is building a tomato processing facility and so with other companies. When these companies begin to function, their impact will be felt and soon the product will flood our markets. Hence importation will reduce significantly.

Same thing is happening to the flour varieties. We produce cassava abundantly. Cassava flour can either be substituted for wheat or millet in bread production.

Same is happening in the automobile industry. These things are gradual processes and not sharp-sharp gra gra thingy. Jonathan has started it. Buhari wants to start his....we need an original idea!

One fact is clear concerning the upcoming election, people's minds are made up already.
Many, in APC states like myself, have a better understanding of APC propaganda cos we can compare their lofty electioneering promises with the realities of the years gone by. I think it's same with those under PDP governors.
Appearing active online doesn't necessarily translate to victory on ground (this, we should have learnt from experience).
Going to the church yesterday, I was amazed by the number of women I saw strolling out of the compound of the PDP leader in my hometown. I had previously thought the town was on lock-down for the APC, especially as the current member representing us in the Federal House of Representatives hails from there, and had been reportedly engaged in massive disbursements of funds and materials to garner support for his reelection bid.
Personally, I made up my mind long ago to cast my vote for Goodluck - not because I have anything to do with the PDP, but because I still think he's a better option (while being far from perfect). Many may insult me for my decision, but why are certain humans like that? (What makes you think your choice MUST be accepted by all others?)
On the Buhari documentary, it shows how much we have lost conscious thinking to dismiss it all with a wave of hand. I haven't watched the documentary even once, but the facts analysed there can't be much different from WHAT we have learnt over the years - a man who applied flock herding to humans, who perceptively jailed SELECTED politicians without regards to the law courts while allowing a SELECT FEW(probably on ethnocentric considerations) to enjoy relative freedom, a man who repressed the Press and deprived the citizens of their fundamental human rights, etc. Could the documentary be worse than that? Probably, there would be reference to Idiagbon's little son attending pilgrimage with his dad and so on... Can we call any of these lies? Haven't we heard them repeatedly over the years? Many are simply not thinking. We are acting like those animals in George Orwell's classic, programmed to and constantly crying: "four legs good, two legs bad!" Until the next programming of "four legs good, two legs better!" Can't we do better than that?
I look at both major parties in the country today and see interest-motivated gatherings of birds of same feathers. Which APC Gov can claim to have a clean bill of health, corruption wise? Which of those in the PDP can claim same? Have the repeated cries on the other by those on one part of the divide blinded our eyes to their obvious flaws?
For those quick to declare "may your life be run the way Jonathan is running this country," I return it that "may yours be run the way Oshiomhole has been running Edo state."

Somebody should tell Buhari that in running a modern economy you no longer wake up and ban things unnecessarily as you do not have the economic capacity as a developing country to be treated the same way by bigger economies that might just kill your country by banning your small export too while flooding your markets with the same banned goods through the blackmarket.

Somebody should tell him that he can raise tarrif for finished products ,imports while given incentives and a little bit of trade protectionism to local industries and manufacturers through policies.

Why do I have this feeling that voting in a Buhari spells an economic woe for this nation?

You agree with him on banning rice because like him, you are oblivious of the facts on ground. You just sit in your arm chair comment carelessly. How much is a bag of rice now, even with significant increase in our local production and the fact that government had to increase the tarrif on imported rice. Compare the price to when it was 100 percent importation and government was collecting moderate tariff. That should tell you something if you have any deductive ability to reason. There is a reason why local producers can't meet up ith local production or even compete with imported brands:
1. Countries like Brazil, India, Malaysia, China not to talk of the West greatly subsidize Agriculture. That way, they can take their product to many African countries and out compete even with high tariffs. Local production will be discouraged and as farmers and agricultural practitioners wont be able to compete with superior brands that have heavily been subsidized already.

2. If Nigeria wants to develop the Agric sector, it has to be the way the present government is handling it, use technology, encourage young graduates, qualified practitioners to invest in it, commercialize agriculture and most importantly, choose aspect of the sector that can be greatly subsidized and sustained. The reality is that no matter what Nigeria does, we can not compete with foreign brands in a free and fair market at least for now. It has to be developed and given systematic structuring as the current minister is doing. This is not a case of ban this and that when you do not have the capacity to produce it. But many of you are superficial and very petty, you wont understand a thing about effective policy as long as you are blinded by irresponsible politicking and propaganda.

Newkidoo:
Most people that has commented on this thread are just not matured! What has origin got to do with wat he said instead of you to read it and make reasonable contributions, you are acting silly!

I agree with him on banning rice and tomatoes! But before doing that he should make sure the local farmers are fully supported and funded.. I just believe in this man.
Most nigerians has no discipline, that is how corruption starts. If corruption could be curb to the minimal, most of these things he mentioned could be achieved!

One Nigeria, great nation, great people!

GMB is actually campaigning for GEJ. APC loyalist please advice your oga at the top to present ORIGINAL IDEAS!

Ban kor, ned ni!

They'll soon ban WAEC or English or Kworuption.

When OBJ banned rice, birds, g/oil without creating the enabling environment, Seme border became the most active border in the country. No need to go through the sea ports. Ships berth at Cotonu. Smugglers transports these commodities through the border. Policemen became fatter. Customs Officers became bigger. OBJ's policy ended up benefiting the 'wrongest' set of people in the country. Everybody wants to be a Customs Officer.

Nigeria cannot produce enough rice locally to meet demand. If they banned imports, the price of rice will rise. Therefore, FG put programmes in place to support local production, with an aim to ensuring they can meet local demand and then they will ban importation.

The ban on importation of rice and tomatoes is the wrong way to go.

Countries dont grow rich by being self sufficient in food production. They grow rich through focusing investments on where they have comparative advantage.

The British brought lots of wealth to our farmers when they encouraged cash crop farming. It was even a cash crop , that is palm oil that was an influence in them colonising nigeria.

Ivory Cost is not self sufficient in food production but its focus on cash crops as done wonders for its economy.

Nigeria's protectionism is a constant complaint from West African neighbours and the government should be ashamed.

The extensive use of import waivers is symptomic of the wrongs of protectionism

I however doubt this present government will be protectionist.

The ACN is ruled by technocrats.

Also, Tinubu's daughter is the Iyaloja (leader of market women) and thriving commerce which booms best in a freer trade economy will be a must have.

Buhari's government will be one managed by technocrats. He is an economic illiterate but seems willing to outsource areas he has very poor knowledge of.
