parrotibaba:Mr Parrot, ok I don understand wetin you mean. I thought you meant Nisterooy in midfield. I was going to tell Coogar to put you on probation for three months until CristineC clears you for the final period. |

parrotibaba:Mr Parrot, But you can see already an instance of Rooney in the wing from that line up. I will provide more line ups and possibly BBC live commentary to back my argument further. From my investigation, SAF adopted 4-3-3 for 2005/6 season. Nistelrooy or Saha was the middle forward while Ronaldo and Rooney flanked. Further investigation revealed that SAF persisted with 4-3-3 in big games between 2006 and 2009, with Rooney used in the flank. |

elampiro:elampiro, there are many variants of 4-3-3. just because rooney is on the outside of a 3-man attack doesn't make him a winger. you can have 2AMs behind a striker. i don't think i have ever seen rooney run the ball down the touchline and deliver a cross. |

coogar:I get you but it's still 4-3-3. But even Gareth Bale doesn't run the ball down the line to deliver a cross. Iniester doesn't run down and whip a cross in. Our match against Inter Milan at OT, Rooney and Giggs swap positions at half time (I saw the whole match again recently), Rooney gave an intelligent connecting cross for CR7 to score the 2nd goal. It must not be a Valencia's speeding and whipping style. |

parrotibaba:* I am not twisting it. Evidence are pointing to the fact Rooney played mostly in the wing in his early days, particularly in 2005/6 season. Then he often played there afterwards particularly in big games. * Facts nullified your argument that he only played there as a wing back or when there's a need to nullify opposition. |

Everton 0-2 Man Utd United also persisted with their favoured 4-3-3 formation, the lively Van Nistelrooy supported by Rooney and debutant Park Ji Sung. United were dominant, with Rooney ignoring the boos to torment former team-mate Phil Neville, and they nearly went ahead again when Van Nistelrooy lashed wide from 20 yards after a slick move. Man Utd: Van der Sar, Neville, Ferdinand, Silvestre, O'Shea, Fletcher (Heinze 72), Keane, Scholes (Smith 81), Park (Richardson 85), Rooney, van Nistelrooy. Subs Not Used: Howard, Rossi. Booked: Scholes. Goals: van Nistelrooy 43, Rooney 46. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/eng_prem/4126970.stm Mr Parrot, you see that Rooney was in the wing? |

^^ But you claimed we played 4-4-2 in 2004/5 to 2005/6. Ferguson Explains 4-3-3 Formation By David Hobbs September 5 2005 Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has explained his recently deployed 4-3-3 formation, claiming he had to change the controversial 4-5-1 from last season that had many flaws. Ferguson, who's used a 4-4-2 formation for most of his Old Trafford life, insisted he had to tinker with his formation and tactics to keep up with opposition. He explained: "The trouble with 4-5-1 is that it doesn't give you enough points of attack and if Rooney and Ronaldo come deep to defend or cover, your lone striker can get isolated. "We used to play 4-4-2, with one player just behind the striker, because it gives you more options, more threats, but 4-3-3 makes the best use of the players we have. "It keeps Ronaldo and Rooney forward, where they do most damage, and gives us more points on the pitch from which to attack." The Scotsman also claims Manchester United can never play defensive football, regardless of the opposition. "Manchester United just can't play defensively. The fans would not stand for it. It's just not United," he concluded. http://m.thefootballnetwork.net/main/s237/st80859.htm ........... Ferguson to stand by Queiroz as unrest grows at negative United Nistelrooy isolated upfront. Portuguese instrumental in 4-3-3 formation http://www.theguardian.com/football/2005/sep/21/newsstory.sport4 |

Veron4 29-08-2005 11:41 PM do u all notice that sometimes when attacking man utd use 4-3-3 and while defending they use 4-5-1? A further review of line ups and matches through out 2005/6 reveals so much. I have reviewed many matches last night up to FA cup against Arsenal where Rooney was named MOTM despite United lost on penalties. |

coogar:* But SAF mentioned a lone striker, which nullified your first option above. * BBC said 4-3-3. In their definition, they meant 4-3-3 wide or regular. *What BBC meant when they said a team played 4-3-3 ......... BBC This formation is quite an attacking one. The 4-3-3 system - that is four defenders, three midfielders and three attackers - allows you to have three attackers while still having a strong midfield. The three midfielders will normally play quite closely together to give protection to the defence and so they cannot be passed around by the opposition. The three strikers will split across the pitch to provide width to the attack. Usually you would have a central attacker with one each side of him. Barcelona play with this system with Samuel Eto'o, Ronaldinho and Ludovic Giuly. The 4-3-3 does not actually differ that much from the 4-5-1 formation Very few teams actually start with this line-up as you need to have specialist attackers. But if a manager needs a goal late on in a game then he may opt to move to three up front. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/rules_and_equipment/4197558.stm |
