We started this house from the foundation level last year and have been documenting the processes we undertook since we started. We have gone far with this building but just as we start to complete all the works, it is better I show how we started the building.

Cost updates to come later. Thanks.

Oga Spyder, just curious about this:

1) Why so much excess (IMHO) mortar between the joints? Pics 1 and 2

2) Why don't you use steel lintels? Pics 3 and 4

Thanks.

For question one, we always use more mortar to make sure of a level plum for the blocks. If you use less cement, there is a possibility that some blocks will be touching others before you get a level. I will like to explore the mixture and composition of foreign mortar. I also noticed this thin mortar in some old colonial buildings here in Nigeria.

For the second question, the issue of metal lintel boards is an ongoing adaptation, I have tried severally to upgrade to the modern methods but the Nigerian mentality is a battle we face here daily. I wish you will come in to this building scene here in Nigeria and together we can try and upgrade the building process. Thanks for your contributions.

I'm proud of you Bro, and it's uncanny that we think alike.

I was just discussing this with my Bro last week on why we waste so much wood when we can use reusable stuff like metal for pillars.

Your pillars will come out looking so beautiful that it may even be sacrilegious to plaster over them.

Another thing is that you can introduce designs inside the forms which will be cast in concrete.

If cement price wasn't an issue I would truly like to do my outside wall of the house in formed concrete.

I'm dead serious on putting my money where my mouth is for my build. All these seemingly crazy schemes that I'm proposing will be showcased in my build.

The interesting thing is that it will make building houses faster and cheaper in the long run but we have to overcome that initial resistance. It will be easy since I will be both the client and the general contractor. The builder, architect, engineers will simply be sub contractors.

Possibly not something major to others but this is one of the things I like about you workers.

They build these forms very straight and most importantly I hardly see bulges and blowouts - I HATE THOSE.

The other thing is how they make very straight brick lines. I would like to see a video of your mason working, I want to see who he does it. It simply can't be following strings alone. I do admit though that having good bricks helps a lot. I've seen some bricks (on other construction) that seemed to have been molded by blind artisans.

Thank you for the commendation, its a really tough task to supervise artisans here. Most bricklayers are too much in a hurry to lay hundreds of blocks and increase their pay that they disregard the quality of work done. I always stay around to correct them or stop any amateur worker from spoiling our overall output. I also have good supervisors who understands my need for top quality work.
We use strings on the side and top line, combined with the spirit level etc. I will post a video of the works another time, thanks.
