What Language Is Nigeria's Lingua Franca?
This question have been registered on my mind for a long period of time.
Quite a number of people told me that it's "pidging". Is dis true? lemme put it this way
-The Indians speak and understand hindi.
-The chinese people speak nd understand chinese lang.
-America & British is ENGLISH as we all know
N/b : Don't tell me Nigeria's own is ENGLISH because that language is a universal language. Or the 3 major lang.(hausa, igbo, yoruba)
Am seriously clueless here.

Depends on the area, really.

There's no true lingua franca, apart from pidgin. Which in itself is pretty sad. Nigerians are too tribalistic to adapt a specific language for country wide communication, but I suppose using a nearly extinct one could work.

Until then, pidgin dey sound well well for ear.

Somalia is an exception although there are Oromos there. However, I have heard that Italian is spoken in some parts of the horn. Where I'm from though, English is hardly spoken the Lingua Francas are Fulfulde and Hausa. Those 2 languages are spoken by most Fulani people in North Eastern Nigeria.

U didn't get it right.
D question is : What is a Lingua-Franca?
This is a language that is adopted as a common language between speakers whose native languages are different.
What am saying is dat there should be a generally accepted, spoken, and understandable language by all the people residing in that particular country.
Take for example :
All Indians can speak nd understand hindi,
then what about Nigeria?

Italian is spoken by a few hundred people who are old now. But the official language of Somalia is Somali, Arabic is a second language for commercial use since most of our trade is with the middle east and we are part of the arab league. But the Government does all things in Somali.

Same in Ethiopia, their official language is Amharic, same in Eritrea.

How is Somalia an exception?

Eritrea speaks Tigrinya and a few other languages, same with Ethiopia, Amhara isn't the main ethnic group, the Oromos are (Selassie) was an oromo I believe.

Same as with Nigeria. If you go to the Northern part of the country, you mainly hear Hausa being used as the main lingua franca (with different Hausa dialects like Kananci and Sakkwataci). Hardly is English used in the north because we don't have that kind of inferiority complex to bow down to the Brits

Eritrea's official language is Tigrigna because that is the mother tongue of nearly 60% of the population. But with regard to Ethiopia, although the the Amhara are not the most numerous ethnic group in Ethiopia, their language is used in formal settings like schools, government, TV, Radio and so forth. Local languages like Oromo, Somali, Tigrigna and etc. are only spoken in their respective regions.

Haile Selassie was Oromo but he acquired his status as a King and Emperor though his father's maternal ancestry (Amhara). Despite being Oromo himself, he still killed thousands of Oromo people and put almost 10 million in concentration camps run by the military. The bastar.d also harboured deep hatred towards Somalis because we sit on 1/3rd of Ethiopia's land mass and we rejected his fake 'Greater Ethiopia' aka Neo-Aksum vision.

I was talking official language. In Somalia everyone speaks Somali, even the Bantus. Even though they have their own mildly bantu language which borrows many words from SOMALI.

@penssuwa did u say Ijaw is our Lingua-Franca?
We have 3 major languages in Nigeria, that is languages that have large number of speakers and Ijaw may be 4th or 5th in terms of rating major languages in Nigeria.
There should be a kind of language that bonds all Nigerians together(not english lang.) as this may bring all ethnic groups, and tribes together in love and unity.
We can all partially take pidgin as our Lingua-Franca, because almost all Nigerian citizens are familiar with it.

So speaking English gauges one's level of intelligence?

Not only are you uneducated and bigoted, but your brain must be ossifying to the state of a true slave.

Na truth be that.

What kind of "educated" person looks down on our native tongues? If you're that educated you should know the value of language and identity.

Don't be stupid boy, being uneducated does not mean one isn't intelligent and I never said they were not intelligent (although that is even debatable given the likes of you, boko haramites and marauding herdsmen inhabiting that north east region).
It is a known fact that people in that region have the lowest education standard in the country so it won't surprise anyone if they can't communicate in English, they simply don't understand the language.

Pride is a foolish thing in the face of facts, your people don't go to school hence the term uneducated unless you want to claim islamic education that's none of my business.

What is the truth in the jargons he wrote? I am a Yoruba and I speak both languages fluently does that mean I have "inferiority complex and bow down to the Brits" as fulaman198 says?

It is an insult to suggest that those illiterates in north east are better than the rest of us because they can't speak English.
