Is this how this clueless animal hope to encourage our indigenous car factory? Nigerian is producing cars now and the best thing to do is to place higher tariff on imported cars to boost patronage for the home base and thereby growing our beloved economy. Please think or consult the economics novice BooHarry for advice. 8 Likes |

Good to know, but such a pronouncement could ultimately boomerang especially given PDP's knack to turn things upside down. They would definitely interpret this to mean APC has an agenda to strangle the local auto industry that has been "transformed under Goodluck Jonathan". It would definitely be appreciated by the Cotonou boys and car dealers, but the elites who have vested interest in the domestic auto industry would no doubt have their feathers ruffled by it. I hope APC does well to clarify such pronouncements as regards their intentions so they don't leave any room for PDP to manipulate things. |

ilugunboy: Currently power generation is decentralized because every home or say 95% have a power generating set lets say thats on a microscopic view, lets up that up to a bigger scale at the level of local govt or even state level we dont need all the power coming from kanji or shiroro that can be put on grid for backup when a power plant is down for tech issues or maintenance This plan can fix power issue and also generate employment imagine decentralized power plant across the country that provide jobs for 1000s if not 100000s and imagine how many family that will change Imagine our refinery is up to do with thats job and thats changing a lot of a families, imagine they will be employing cleaners, drivers, gate men, security personnel, clerks, professionals, engineers etc It is not difficult but when government careless about the citizen what do u expect # change 2 Likes |

ilugunboy: Price is a big part of the problem. Remember the gencos pay below the market price for gas. NNPC is compelled to sell to them at a discount. Dangote, Honeywell and co, don't enjoy this same discounts. Then, we have the issue of basic infrastructure(transmission hubs) |

atlwireles: You do not understand the issues. Yes many companies generate electricity which they can not plough to the grid because of transmission inadequacies. By LAW, only TRANSCON can evacuate generated power and dump on distribution lines. Rivers state has an IPP with over 100MW capacity but your President instructed Transcon to not take from it because of the face-off with Amaechi. Osinbajo is talking about decentralizing from generation up to distribution by setting up Modular plants with transmission and distribution facilities, as against the current inefficient model. 5 Likes |

ijeabom: Seriously will you, at this point, let go of buying your Range or even your Toyota for Innoson? The point is, the policy is still immature. Those tariffs are nothing but a headache for right now. If Nissan comes in and starts full operation, I can understand how you might want to impose a high tariff on imported Nissan vehicles. Then a lot has to go in place before the high tariffs can really work, our credit system has to be implroved so that people will be able to afford this brand new cars. Importing still provides a life line for people that want to have decent cars without shelling out money for a brand new one. These tariffs have really been a pain in the butt. 35% is way too high and their plan is to increase to 70%, that's just crazy. 8 Likes |

BAD Policy! I don't support this one bit. How do they expect local manufacturers to compete with importers of cars considering the preference Nigerians have for imported goods? We are supposed to be thinking of overcoming the curse of importation. This is a bad policy to my e said, “We do not agree that there should be high tariffs on imported cars whether new or old ones because Nigeria is not producing cars for now. 1 Like |

The so called professor pastor wants to move gas to power plants around Nigeria with trucks, he surely thinks gas for power plants is the same thing as cooking gas, idiota. Pastors should concentrate on fleecing the tithes and offering of their congregation instead of joining politics and trying to fleece us all with lies. APC e-rats please educate your professor, we know Buhari is dumb, but if the vice is also blockhead then you guys are in trouble. explain to him, Gas for power plant is methane and you don't transport methane around in trucks. Cooking gas that is distributed with trucks is either liquid propane of liquid Butane and no country in the world generate public power from expensive propane and butane in the presence of massive amounts of cheap methane. And by the way we do not even have enough manufacturing capacity for propane and butane for even home cooking not to talk of using it for power generation. 12 Likes |

Slashing the tariff is policy somersault that will set the hand of time backward. It will erase the gains of the automotive policy What a sensible politician will do is to find a way to simulate production, not to encourage importation! 2 Likes |

PointB: What gains if i may ask? Nigeria is a huge market and infrastructure (power) is the biggest incentive to kick start any sector not increased tarrifs. We have outrightly banned frozen chicken but it hasn't helped our local production as 80% of what you find in the market today is smuggled in. 5 Likes |

talktimi:Thanks. We are brothers remember... I support the Automobile policy of this government though I feel that they can do more. Reversing the policy high tarrif on automobile import or lifting it is counter productive. I will even support 80% tarriff so as to discourage patronage to favor local production. However, the government should see that they check the influx of such goods via illegal routes |
Re: APC Will Slash Tariffs On Imported Cars -osinbajo by Nobody: 9:28am On Feb 12, 2015 |
asha80:That is no longer the situation. There is what hi now called embedded generation that allows any individual, corporate body or govt at any level to generate power and distribute locally. All you have to do is apply to NERC for licence to build an embedded power plant and work with the decentralized distribution companies to achieve that |
