Ignorance is a disease. It is advisable you do your research well enough before displaying your knowledge inept here for the whole world to see.A good example of IPP can be found on Marina,Lagos directly opposite Old Nitel building. This IPP serves all the state government offices on the Island.Island. Ikeja has too.

Thanks for the clarification

There is Island Power Plant. It is Situated on Marina road
There is Akute Power Plant supplying power for the Akute Water Works.

These are two Examples of Private Partnership power plants in Lagos

If you think otherwise, then you're a shallow minded Nigerian who doesn't wish this country economic progress.

I think you, like many here, view issues too parochially. You do not achieve "economic progress" with one consideration alone. Helping citizens to be empowered and productive also has massive positive implication for "economic progress". An empowered citizen is a productive citizen. Whatever a nation can do to empower its citizens must be done because the wealth of any nation are its people. Getting as many Nigerians as possible owing cars, via ensuring an affordable overall mix catering for all levels of new and used cars , is economically productive. Just look at developed nation where virtually everyone can afford a car. Personal productivity is very high and it is the nation that benefits economically from developing/empowering its human capital.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_capital

Human capital is the stock of knowledge, habits, social and personality attributes, including creativity, embodied in the ability to perform labor so as to produce economic value.

For example, the productivity and economic value of an average Briton to his nation, despite enjoying far greater per capita income, will be far higher than that of a Nigerian because he can buy a well-maintained relatively low-mileage year 2005 Nissan Primera at around £850 (after negotiating from the asking price of £990 below) whereas the same car may cost upwards of £2,000.00 in Nigeria with most Nigerians not being able to afford such. The difference is that proactive policies and provisions ensure majority of Britons can afford to buy a decent car. Simplistically this is what Nigeria must try and achieve to promote real and transformational "economic progress" centred around empowering ordinary Nigerians. Nigerians should be assisted to be as productive as they can and Nigeria should continue promoting economic policies that produces higher level of per capita income which sees most of their citizens able to afford most things they need. You cannot seriously believe "economic progress" is singularly and inextricably linked to producing new cars which 80% of a population cannot afford. I just think we are yet to understand in Africa that it is human capital we must empower and invest in.

Look at the price of the car above being sold in the UK i.e £990.00. Consider that the per capita income of the UK is $34,694.00. The same car will cost at least double what it sells for in the UK in Nigeria where per capita income is $5,440.00. It is a a grave, unfortunate and immediate 'affordability' reality like this responsible leaders must address before chasing unrealistic 'pie in the sky' development models.

Actually it's a perfect ideal.
It will provide jobs.
Farmers will benefit And besides we are talking of pupils here not matured gluttons.
I don't Av the figures right now but one of the poorest states in Nigeria in terms of income generated is faithful with it without going bankrupt despite even having far more pupils than some known richer states, why can't it be a national
policy.

Also importer of rice and food supplies will benefit. I am not against the policy. I will be more interested in the quality of education. Secondary school students in China can write programming codes. The british are considering incorporating same into their educational curriculum. Why don't improve our education so that foreigners will like to study in Nigeria, it will promote educational tourism like in the UK and India. That is another way to receive foreign revenue. Our leaders no dey think.

We now have private institutions doing the work for the government. Education is critical to national development and should not be relegated to private individuals. Don't feed their stomach, feed their minds.

It's is criminal to shot up tarrif on imported new and second hand car without a corresponding increase in local production at competitive price.

You only encourage smuggling and the resultant loss of revenue to the government by way of reduced custom duty...

You can't inconvenient Nigerians because of some cabal close to the seat of government ...promising the govt they can meet demand, which obviously is a daunting task...

Slashing tarrif on imported cars will increase smuggling: are U sure your sense has not joined ASUU strike? It is like saying reduction in the price of air flight will encourage land travelling.

People resulted to smuggling as a result of inability to meet up with high tarrif: get that drilled into your skull please.

Importers will only benefit if local production is inadequate.
In Osun, it's strictly a local thing where the pupils are given very nourishing local foods. The eggs supplied aren't coming from outside the country And no one is saying food isn't sufficient to go round.
Am talking of primary schools here and nothing more. There is a reason why I restricted it to public schools. What will the mind assimilate if the stomach is empty.
Only the less privilege send their wards to public primary as at today and it cost government little or nothing to secure it's future. Ss u are improving other aspects of their education, give them lunch also. Not breakfast or dinner.
This is needed and achievable.

APC is apparently going to undo this government's achievements out of hate. There're traffic jams in most of Nigeria's populous cities, we're currently trying to encourage car manufacturers to move to Nigeria, GE is already installing a $1 billion manufacturing plant in Calabar, Innoson, Kia and others are working, Toyota is on the way, how can we start moving backwards in the name of inclusion? The average citizen in Nigeria's lower class has more important concerns and needs than the possible reduced price (which is still actually unaffected) that can come with reduced importation tariff. So please go back to the drawing board Sir, and think about more things you can improve rather than ignorantly acknowledging this government's achievements.

Retrogressive. Instead of increasing the tariffs to encourage the indigenous production ,they are reducing it. Up till now we still haven't understood the concept of common wheelbarrow and when it seem like are beginning to look inward to understand the concept of motion, some deluded and tribalistic animals that calls themselves progressives are coming to set us on a reverse mode again.

Lagos already has modular power stations serving strategic locations and facilities not connected to grid.

But someone said any power generated must be sent to the grid

all power generated by any power plant in the country is channeled to a central national grid that is in turn redistributed all round the country rather than that power generated in that power plant being used within the geographical area that power is generated thereby reducing power loss during the transmission to the so called national grid

The venerable Prof should stick to legal matters where i hope he is well versed. if the General said this i would not be bothered.
Hearing this from the only educated member of the tag team scares me to my bones.

First. We are crying about creating employment, and we have just created a policy which has succeeded in attracting investors to build assembly plants in Nigeria, and create thousands of QUALITY jobs. Prof has just told us APC intends to reverse that process and leave the investors who believed our policies stranded mid stream. Can you imagine how difficult it will then be to attract any other investors in any sector at all? This will simply confirm to the foreign investors that our policies are not worth the paper they are written on.

Second. On the power issue. Does Prof even realize the sector has been totally deregulated and a competitive market implemented? Several IPPs are alive and well in Nigeria today, including at least 3 belonging to LASG. The National Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has on its website over 100 companies licensed to do just this i.e. modular power, with over 80% already operational and supplying to industrial players (these are naturally more attractive than residential consumers who it would be a struggle to collect your monthly bills from).
All the electricity distribution companies are ACTIVELY (i cant stress this enough) looking for credible investors to do embedded power plants within their local grids. This addresses the issue of National Grid mentioned before on this thread.

In any case, non of these solutions are short term and the main bottle neck in any gas power solution right now is access to gas. There are no easy answers and APC will come to discover this when/if they win.

These people are even more uninformed than i first thought!

Nigerians please interrogate any change story before you accept it OOOH! From frying pan to fire is not a nice experience OOOH!
It is easy to clamor for change but please bear in mind that anyone you vote in now is there for at least 4 years. By the time you find out how clueless these guys are, you would have to wait for/waste another 4 years!!!

The choice is ours guys, but so are the Consequences!!!!

Heard of RMB?Wesbank is their subsidiary and they will roll out specialized loans/financing for customers willing to buy from our local manufacturers. And for your information 70% of the 33manufacturers already on ground are commercial/Utility vehicle producers; this means passenger vehicles are not the primary targets for the first phase of the policy implementation.

I am an business analyst in the automotive industry and i can assure you that the policy is very feasible if all the other pieces of the puzzle are fixed; thats the more reason Nigeria needs continuity and a stable political ambience.

If the focus is on production of commercial and utility vehicles, why is the government increasing duty/levy payable on passenger vehicles?

You cant run before learning to crawl; the difference between full scale manufacturing and vehicle assembly we have today is a more complex supply chain and OEM local presence. I never really believed in the feasibility of the new auto-policy until i took out time to attend forums where officials of NAC further educated us on certain aspects of the policy as a whole.

Is that not what Osinbajo is saying also? Is it wrong to then direct that punitive import duty, which mainly punishes and disenfranchise ordinary Nigerians, should not be deemed a compulsory option for assisting the development of quality local vehicle production? Your adage about running before learning to crawl actually applies to the approach of the Nigerian Government in my opinion. Creating a local car manufacturing sector should not come at the expense of destroying choice and affordability for all tiers of Nigerian pockets. That approach won't work.
