The idea is not bad. I am only interested in the cost implication. I just feel it is a policy to appear popular because it may be difficult to implement. Like Soludo said, a plan without naira or kobo is a wish-list

The so called professor pastor wants to move gas to power plants around Nigeria with trucks, he surely thinks gas for power plants is the same thing as cooking gas, idiota.

Pastors should concentrate on fleecing the tithes and offering of their congregation instead of joining politics and trying to fleece us all with lies.

APC e-rats please educate your professor, we know Buhari is dumb, but if the vice is also blockhead then you guys are in trouble. explain to him, Gas for power plant is methane and you don't transport methane around in trucks. Cooking gas that is distributed with trucks is either liquid propane of liquid Butane and no country in the world generate public power from expensive propane and butane in the presence of massive amounts of cheap methane. And by the way we do not even have enough manufacturing capacity for propane and butane for even home cooking not to talk of using it for power generation.

The countries that transport LNG for electricity only exist in mars I suppose. Kmt

What is this decentralising power generation? Is power production currently centralised?
Don't mind them. Corruption feeds on lies and and ignorance. That's why they're reluctant to improve the education sector. Which of them has proposed any plan for education? Decentralising power is not the problem. We need to change the technology. Global warming is real and America is now cutting down the use of hydrocarbons for power generation. We have many alternatives in Nigeria that can serve different regions well. But they all need good education as food. And employing foreigners will worsen the economy. China's blocking foreign internet connections for economic reasons: to reduce US domination of their economy in all areas. And these liars want to encourage imports. What will happen to local production and companies like Innoson when exposed to competition from giants like Toyota and Ford?

The venerable Prof should stick to legal matters where i hope he is well versed. if the General said this i would not be bothered.
Hearing this from the only educated member of the tag team scares me to my bones.

First. We are crying about creating employment, and we have just created a policy which has succeeded in attracting investors to build assembly plants in Nigeria, and create thousands of QUALITY jobs. Prof has just told us APC intends to reverse that process and leave the investors who believed our policies stranded mid stream. Can you imagine how difficult it will then be to attract any other investors in any sector at all? This will simply confirm to the foreign investors that our policies are not worth the paper they are written on.

Second. On the power issue. Does Prof even realize the sector has been totally deregulated and a competitive market implemented? Several IPPs are alive and well in Nigeria today, including at least 3 belonging to LASG. The National Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has on its website over 100 companies licensed to do just this i.e. modular power, with over 80% already operational and supplying to industrial players (these are naturally more attractive than residential consumers who it would be a struggle to collect your monthly bills from).
All the electricity distribution companies are ACTIVELY (i cant stress this enough) looking for credible investors to do embedded power plants within their local grids. This addresses the issue of National Grid mentioned before on this thread.

In any case, non of these solutions are short term and the main bottle neck in any gas power solution right now is access to gas. There are no easy answers and APC will come to discover this when/if they win.

These people are even more uninformed than i first thought!

Nigerians please interrogate any change story before you accept it OOOH! From frying pan to fire is not a nice experience OOOH!
It is easy to clamor for change but please bear in mind that anyone you vote in now is there for at least 4 years. By the time you find out how clueless these guys are, you would have to wait for/waste another 4 years!!!

The choice is ours guys, but so are the Consequences!!!!

God bless you brother...

Some people claim that all generated power has to be sent to the grid for distribution: same set of people say lagos has shown example by building its own IPP's to power key offices in the state:
WHy totaly BAN rice and tomato...?? (except the Agricultural revolution of the present govt. is really a success) or they are just talking from both sides their mouths

Re: APC Will Slash Tariffs On Imported Cars -osinbajo by highmood(m): 3:22pm On Feb 12, 2015
Policy backwardness. When u slash the price of imported cars, you will simply give rooms for many people to keep importing and even form a strong cabal just like we have in the generator and oil importation. If some one like innoson could produce cars in Nigeria notwithstanding the absence of power, any car manufacturer or government telling us he would first fix power before he would increase the tariff is deceiving itself. I expected him to say he would call the stakeholders in the car manufacturing industry to ask them," prior to when the power would become reasonably constant, what should be done for them to invest and produce cars in Nigeria" not slashing the price and giving rooms for cabals and foreign governments to flood our country with their product and frustrate our development. I think these guys are even the cluesless and desperate ones. Osinbajo is simply deficient. For now Goodluck is working. Any other is a counterfeit.

in fact because of this desperation campaign I wont vote apc again. musr u rubbish everything gej did just because u want to enter aso rock.
I don't pray to ride on tokunbo again in my life. as a business woman I invest d car money in my business and I use d gain to pay d auto loan repayment. it's just as if I was given d car for free.

Passenger vehicles production is part of the plan but based on the investors preference so far and with the realities on ground; commercial vehicles production seems to be the most sustainable for now. Government has been buying time to study the investors that are willing to invest before they know the tariffs that will be raised. Based on the willing investors willing to build facilities i wont be surprised if government only raises tariffs for commercial vehicles.

Remember the tariffs are yet to be raised; but the waivers for CKD/SKD/DKD components importation is well in place to open up the industry.

Bros, Nigerians buy Tokunbo because "na there their power reach" for now. If a Newly made locally made car of same specs with camry 2.2, and cost about N300,000-N500,000, Nigerians will prefer it to a Tokunbo Camry 2.2 that costs almost/over a million. The buying decision of consumers is always driven by many factors which the automobile policy has taken care of.Before now the volume of imported vehicles exceed 60,000 units annually, and do they still sustain? Do you know the Engineers, accountants, coorporate Advisors, lawyers and many other professionals will will be employed if production is made here? Even the quoted units of import isnot enough Nigerians will buy more when its more affordable which the policy will take care of, because jobs and more money will reach many households. I agree with you on refinery, in fact, it is one of my anger with this administration because they promised to build 3 in their "Tranformation" bluebrint. Nothing stops all sectors to move at the same pace in development of our country. Finally, local production reduces costs of import and help in strenghtening the naira.

Zikkyy:

Mainly tokubo vehicles except for politicians and extra large contractors. We are talking about brand new cars. that's what the local plant will be producing.

It will create lots of jobs if we are able to consume everything that's produced. The volume of imported vehicles is about 60,000 annually (if am correct). The implication is that the volume cannot sustain more than two or three manufacturers. So i don't see the lots of jobs anywhere. You don't need local assembly to increase patronage of raw materials. It's even easier and better to start with the local production of replacement parts to service vehicles in use.

Focus on refining first. Impact of imported cars on foreign reserve is not so material when compared to refined petroleum products (in tens of billions USD). Refining will create more jobs, open up more industries (petrochemical, chemical, plastic, textile e.t.c).

This is based on the assumption that we can afford the cheaper alternative, but we know local version is not cheap.

Is that not what Osinbajo is saying also? Is it wrong to then direct that punitive import duty, which mainly punishes and disenfranchise ordinary Nigerians, should not be deemed a compulsory option for assisting the development of quality local vehicle production? Your adage about running before learning to crawl actually applies to the approach of the Nigerian Government in my opinion. Creating a local car manufacturing sector should not come at the expense of destroying choice and affordability for all tiers of Nigerian pockets. That approach won't work.

I strongly believe government is still testing the waters which i believe is the right thing to do........read what i replied a fellow nairalander......Passenger vehicles production is part of the plan but based on the investors preference so far and with the realities on ground; commercial vehicles production seems to be the most sustainable for now. The auto policy is good just like the proposed full deregulation of petrol but the timing is wrong.
Some major infrastructural deficiencies needs to be sorted out first before the auto policy should be hailed.
These deficiencies primarily include but not limited to Power.
Innosun for instance highest overhead cost during production goes into power generation to his factories. He in return, place it on the final cost of his vehicles produced. I don't know of any of his vehicles that is less than 2.5 million (before fall of naira ooooo).
How many Nigerians will choose to go for an Innosun at such price when u can get a good tokunboh C Class Mercedes-Benz with lesser amount? In my opinion, 2005 benz is still superior to its 2015 Innosun counterpart.
Till date, govt still remain Innosun biggest customer. This shouldn't be. Innosun cars price needs to come down and this will only happen if cost of production is drastically reduced. That should be out govt greatest concern now and not increasing tariffs therby increasing and forcing on Nigerian throats very expensive vehicles which doesn't[/b] reflect true value for money.
In other words government should pay close attention to fixing infrastructures. This I agree

It's is criminal to shot up tarrif on imported new and second hand car without a corresponding increase in local production at competitive price.

You only encourage smuggling and the resultant loss of revenue to the government by way of reduced custom duty...

You can't inconvenient Nigerians because of some cabal close to the seat of government ...promising the govt they can meet demand, which obviously is a daunting task...
how many Nigerians are being inconvenienced? I am an igbo, I think I should be in the forefront with those demanding that the tarrif be reduced because of my kinsmen trading at begger, but then which one is beneficial importing and creating employment for those outside as well as using Nigeria and Africa as a dumping ground or discourage both the importers and any cabals by increasing the tarrif and creating employment for our people and in the longrun, we have enough and cheap cars. What we should be saying is how can we stop smuggling. How can the custom, police and immigration help us in that regard. If they understand the laws and still take bribe, and yet point fingers to the top, then who is fooling who. We are fooling ourselves. So I hate it when people are sentimental blind. Be objective and forward looking.

Wow! Encourage them with what? If they stopped importation today, would Innoson be able to fulfill demand? Remember demand covers everything from small/economy to ultra-luxury cars to even just the number of vehicles purchased in Nigeria. How many other companies are fully functional right now? What about our credit system, can all Nigerians afford a brand new car? These are questions you guys need to ask yourself. The tariff is very premature, 35% is very high. Maybe its because you haven't bought a car is why you're talking like this. Right now that tariff is nothing but a burden.

The biggest encouragement the government can give them is constant power and a robust manufacturing industry.

My brother. Do a bit of research before delivering wrong info as though it were the gospel!!! This information is available everywhere. Where were you when the whole discuss on power privatization was going on. In truth except we equip ourselves with knowledge how can we know who is credible and who is not?

Please for your information:

1. Power Generation has been privatized and is in private hands as we speak. Even the new plants Government is completing under the NIPP are also in the last stages of being sold. Any investor today can build his own power plant, and several are already doing this as we speak.

2. Transmission is still in government hands. However, the operational management is in the hands of an experienced Canadian Company called Manitoba Hydo International. There are moves to privatize this in the near future.

3. Distribution has been fully privatized and is already in private hands.

Just some basic info, which like i said is available for free online.

Even FG knws that they are on the wrong path

The Federal Government may have bowed to pressure on the implementation of the 70 per cent tariff on imported used vehicles by postponing its enforcement to April 30, 2015.
This is the third time in six months that the tariff implementation date will be shifted. It was first moved from July 1, 2014 when the government decided to implement the policy in two phases of 35 per cent apiece to January 1, 2015.
The government said then that the arrangement was to enable local vehicle assembly plants to ramp up production in order to meet the nation’s demand for brand new vehicles.
