Thank you for stopping by. Unfortunately this is way above your IQ, but you can stick around and watch
Don't thank me, you dullard! Smh...It is arguably clear you have no clue on what IQ means. Please, give me a break for sounding silly. I don't have time for an ignorant person like you who thinks he knows much whereas he knows nothing. angry lipsrsealed

Do you have an opinion on morality or is it totally beyond you?

At what stage are Boko Haram in this social evolution?
Is religion too a product of social evolution?
plaetton:
I still have no idea what you are talking about , or are trying to talk about.

I have given you a simple answer that morality is product of social evolution, both at the individual level, and at the level of the society, any given society.
In other words, my morality is the product of my social evolution.
My morality is shaped first by the habits and norms of my parents, my community and environment, my education, my philosophical leaning ( in your case, your religion), blended with the common laws of my society.

Now u have turned ur own thread to something silly.

All I see here is dumb questions...what is right? What is moralily? What is empathy? ...Seriously? You can as well ask, what is a dog?

To me if someone slaps me I feel pain or if someone steals my phone I feel hurt. Do I need to rush to the bible to know if I should feel hurt/pain or not? No. With that, I already know slapping or stealing from others will hurt or pain them, hence the decision not to do it.

Now some people still hurt others, pastors still cheat on their wives despite knowing it will hurt her. This is because we are faced between trying to satisfy ourselves and others sometimes. Its a tough decision to make sometimes and at the end what matters most prevails, hence some people get hurt.

As an existential nihilist, I believe the human life has no value except those we attach to it to give us a sense of purpose

In few words you could have said that your moral compass is a product of the society. If we wake up tomorrow and start cannibalism, you will happily jump in

Existential nihilism would never leave the comfort of a text book any more than Godzilla would leave your LED screen. Look at your life and tell me whether you are living your nihilism or even trying to

Am done sir... No more mentions cus i wont reply it.

And i am sorry if my post hurt you, it was not intended.
No circle at all, it's a straight checkmate as it were. Your definition of what is RIGHT is very porous. There are right things that hurt people. Punishment of offenders for instance hurt people e.g the offenders and their sympathizers. Is it right to punish offenders? How do you determine what hurts no one? How do you know people's feeling? Do you feel the same every time? Why should morality be based on feelings? Who is the moral law giver? These are questions you should answer or ponder if you are serious as against irreligious extremists.

You can choose to live in denial and bury your head in the sand but the SAD REALITY is that human live has no purpose except whatever notions we assign to it to help us sit life's course out.

WHY are you here?

Life is nothing but a string of consciousness sandwiched between the cradle and the grave, within which we "keep ourselves busy" with whatever catches our fancy

While I agree that morality could be a product of the society... I never said so in my post. You indicated you wanted to know how we as individuals become morality.

Why should the society start cannibalism? Is cannibalism a moral behaviour?
Today look around you, people in the society act in ways that goes against morality; they steal, molest women, and even kill. Have I happily jumped into it?

Seriously do u think cannibalism is moral? Don't the society condenm stealing?
Re: Atheists, What Is The VALUE Of Human Life? by vooks(op): 1:39pm On Feb 12, 2015
This is circular thinking bro.
If society produces morality then why should you DEMAND that society must not produce cannibalism because that is not moral? You seem to have some standards of what moral is /ain't and you expect the society to conform to these. Funny guy cool

Morality is a product of social evolution. Your morality borrows heavily from society is what you are saying. If/when we evolve to the point of cannibalism, you will happily eat my fried liver

So, where do we separate the actual societal evolved moral values from deviations from the same?
Example. Society has evolved to the point where raping an infant is detestable. A pedophil.e in this environment is clearly deviating from the evolution path. But could he be evolving into the 'next' phase?

Buddy, since I don't know what I am talking about, maybe you should put words in my mouth for me,since there appears to something in particular you are eager to hear.

You forget that both atheists and theists coexist in the same society under the social and moral norms.
The difference here is that the atheists is self-responsible for his virtues and vices, whereas the theists has devil making him do bad things, and a god/savior to erase his moral shortcomings.

So true. Going to school, raising children, starting a new job, etc. are all activities that are engaged in by humans to kill time, or "keep ourselves busy" until the Grim Reaper shows up. Time is the real Papa or Uncle here. Life is probably a characteristic/attribute of Time itself. Maybe Time is conscious and has a system of organizing things that is based on the number of lives around.

Oga... Pls respond to my first post on how I derive my one moral values. I clearly explain to you on why I wont hurt another, which is because I know how it feels when someone hurts me.
I didn't say anything about society's role even though I believe in this posibility. I will not delve into that if you just ignore my first response. I expect you to explicitly respond to that and not just pretend you didint read my post.

Beside stop talking about cannibalism. We are talking about morality. Cannibalism is not the only immoral behaviour in the world. We have rape, murder, theft and cheating. They occur in every society but I have not jumped into it because (again going backbto my first response which u chose to ignore) everyone at one point in time knows the effect of such immoral behaviour on another. People who hurt others do it becasue at a point in time they choice to hurt others prevailed, not that they didn't know what they did was wrong.

Again... R.aping can never be moral because it will hurt me if I am r.aped or if someone rap.ed my daughter. Pls stick to topic... Cannibalism and r.ape is not moral except u accept that it pleases people to be r.aped.

Society does not produce values overnight. They are dynamic and evolve over time and generations.
This is why I referred to Social evolution, something that you obviously have trouble grasping.

Yes. Moral values can be socially engineered,. as we have so many instances today.
For example, the tolerance and acceptance of homosexuality in many western societies and the non-acceptance of same in more primitive societies.

I don't think time is conscious and organizes things based on available number of lives as you stated, its quite the opposite, I believe.

The consciousness embodied in time stems from human consciousness. I don't think time exists independent of our collective cognizance and recognition of it. For example, if live and humanity ceases to exist, needless to say time measurements like centuries, decades, years, months, weeks, days, minutes et al will grind to a halt.

In other words, time is an artificial creation of man meant for measurement.

You are funny.
Does space exist 'independent of our collective cognizance and recognition of it'?
You need to study elementary physics to appreciate what time is.

Simple because we are humans ,with unique intellect. I dont know what you think about human nature but i tell you human nature is good, beautiful and moral... Whatever you will not like others to do to you, dont do it to others.

You know stealing is bad cus it hurts u when someone steals from u.

You know insult is bad cus it hurts u.

You know raping is bad cus it will hurt u when raped.

You know slavery is bad cus it will hurt u when enslaved.

So you see thats why i said morality is encompassed in the dimension of empathy.

whatever i do, good or bad are all my choice and my responsibility...
Re: Atheists, What Is The VALUE Of Human Life? by vooks(op): 8:19pm On Feb 12, 2015
In many words your morality is a figment of your society collective and historical imagination.
Is this how you make decisions? When faced with a moral issue, can you simply disregard the 'social voices' in your head screaming at you and do what you wanted to do?

I choose to see the good in mankind.

My advice to all
Never loose hope in mankind cus you are part of this one whole, humanity is like an ocean, that a part of the ocean is dirty doesnt mean the whole ocean is dirty

Radiate boundless love to the entire world, unhindered by nothing. not religion, not race, class or colour. We are all deserving of love

The issue of the earth passing away, uuuhm that i totally disbelieve.

Be well bro macelliot...

You said, "you wished to see good in humanity," but you later said that the Issue of earth passing away is unbelievable.
.
For the good to come, the Old-things {inperfect earth(suffering)} will pass away and the new earth(promised paradise) will be accomplished....
People do not really understands the concept of Paradise(new life).
.
You might not believe me, but the mysteries of this world lies within the Unseen forces of GOOD and EVIL.
Not believing something does not clarifies that they didn't exist. There exist a Mysterious Unseen Supernatural Being.
Think about it, the Good and evil ones dies. If that marks the end of this life just like that without any hope of "life after death", then the law and forces guilding MAN, CONCIENSE, and LIFE is unfair, injustive, and meaningless.
This inperfectness, suffering, death will not endure forever, because At the end of every tunnel, there is a light.

Thanks

In planet earth
We live, we die
We laugh and we cry
We eat and we go hungry
We have hot and cold
Joy and sadness
Up and down
Hope and despair.
In all this we find balance and the essence of living, and none can exist without the other.
If you remove hunger, cold, sadness the balance will fail cus their counterparts cannot exist.
We are mortals and nothing makes life sweeter and more interesting than that.
Each moment priceless and beautiful cus it will never come again.
This is our home, we have not finished living this life and people are here wishing for another.
Let us channel our good to the betterment of our home and not hope to escape to one that can be termed mere figments of our wild imaginations.
Ok you believe in paradise, good for you but as of now you are still on earth, let your good make the earth better so you may leave it a paradise for your children.
I do not care what your beliefs about the earth are; All i know is that you are still on planet earth and the betterment of this world is all our responsibility.
Gaia needs peace.
Gaia do not deserve to be destroyed and neither will it be
Gaia deserve our goodness.
Let us all together rebuild this world that we may share in the days of peace.
