What gains if i may ask? Nigeria is a huge market and infrastructure (power) is the biggest incentive to kick start any sector not increased tarrifs.

We have outrightly banned frozen chicken but it hasn't helped our local production as 80% of what you find in the market today is smuggled in.

I suppose you have evidence to support this claim.

If partisan politics have blinded so much so that you don't even appreciate the fact that Nissan, Kia, Hyundai and co setting up assembling bases in Nigeria is a gain on its own, there is noting I can say to convince you.

But I believe neutrals will understand that fact that those car manufacturers are very much aware of the power situation in the country, and would have done extensive feasibility studies and SWOT analysis before setting up their factories. They would not need a partisan 'Obiageli' to advise them. Similarly, Nigerians who will be directly and indirectly employed by those wouldn't be bothered about how ignorant folks will seek to belittle their gains.

A country that keep looking for diversification shouldn't be reversing revolutionary ideas. This tariff slash pledge is evidence that APC don't have idea how ambitious the country is!

The so called professor pastor wants to move gas to power plants around Nigeria with trucks, he surely thinks gas for power plants is the same thing as cooking gas, idiota.

Pastors should concentrate on fleecing the tithes and offering of their congregation instead of joining politics and trying to fleece us all with lies.

APC e-rats please educate your professor, we know Buhari is dumb, but if the vice is also blockhead then you guys are in trouble. explain to him, Gas for power plant is methane and you don't transport methane around in trucks. Cooking gas that is distributed with trucks is either liquid propane of liquid Butane and no country in the world generate public power from expensive propane and butane in the presence of massive amounts of cheap methane. And by the way we do not even have enough manufacturing capacity for propane and butane for even home cooking not to talk of using it for power generation.

Sorry, you can transport methane in trucks by compression

The auto policy as it is is designed to bring pain to Nigerians. We are not ready for it. Our economy just cannot take it. It makes little difference if the car is imported or manufactured locally. How Nigerians buy brand new automobiles (aside politicians and corporate)? I really don't see locally assembly making any serious impact if our economy cannot consume their output. Let the Government focus on areas that will impact more on the economy e.g. power, refining, agriculture e.t.c

the point of the policy..
when the companies producing now can't meet demand other companies will have to open to cash in.

And who told u that importation of cars doesn't create jobs. Starting from the buyer, clearing and forwarding agents, transporters, auto mechanics down to the scrap metal man that deals with the remnants. Don't be deceived, there is currently thousands if not millions benefitting from the status quo.
The truth is as long as prices of Nigerian made prices are at the high side, it will never be attractive to the vast majority. I don't blame the producers either, their cost of production is also high. If Nigerians don't buy, won't the company fold up? This should be our govt primary concern. help the companies in reducing their overhead therby reducing the cost of these vehicles therby becoming attractive to vast majority of Nigerians and not only govt.
Even with the increase in tariff, tokunboh cars are still cheaper, attractive and even safer so what really should be the primary catch to the Nigerian consumer?
again I state, the policy is good but the timing is wrong.

Even without local car assembly, the part manufacturers can grow by making parts for servicing/repairs of automobiles. parts manufacturers will thrive producing parts/spares for maintaining the millions of cars on our roads today. It's not compulsory you have a car manufacturing plant before you make tyres, brakepad, fan belt, battery or engine oil.

while pdp under gej has come out with auto policy which has earned someone like me a tear rubber jeep for d first time in my life because they assembled it in Nigeria which forces d auto company to liaise with banks to give it out on 4years term loan. now apc want Nigeria ti continue to be a dumping ground for tokunbo cars. when are we going to grow if we still depends on oyinbo left overs.
in fact because of this desperation campaign I wont vote apc again. musr u rubbish everything gej did just because u want to enter aso rock.
I don't pray to ride on tokunbo again in my life. as a business woman I invest d car money in my business and I use d gain to pay d auto loan repayment. it's just as if I was given d car for free.

You have raised a very good point! But remember these parts are known as Aftermarket car products which ideally should make Original equipment manufacturers more competitive. If we ply solely that path we will be scaring away potential OEMs that may be willing to set up shops to support assembly or produxtion plants. The clear reason for this is if you allow aftermarket producers gain too much traction OEMs cannot really thrive.

Government is taking this path because we have local capacity/facilities on ground to manufacture;all that was needed is a demand for what they produce and this tariff raise is one way to draw the attention of u and i to the existence of local manufacturers. Just like in the area of power we have capacity on ground(billions of dollars invested years back) to sustain the national/centralized grid system and it is too late for anyone to be talking about decentralization of power generation. Our focus now should be how to speed up the implementation of the new gas master plan to ensure power stations get sufficient gas supplies. In my area gas pipes are being layed but omoniles are really frustrating the contractors......these are the realities;just like vandalization is an issue too.

Slashing the tariff is policy somersault that will set the hand of time backward. It will erase the gains of the automotive policy

What a sensible politician will do is to find a way to simulate production, not to encourage importation!

I have one question for you.
How do you protect a ghost industry?
Isn't it logical to first get the local manufacturers up and running first before increasing tariffs?

Thanks for your observation and point of view, which should have been expressed without insulting others.
Nobody is saying GEJ's policy is not good but ill timed.
You dont throw away your gallons of water because you have seen cloud gathering for rain. What do you mean having a policy in full effect? We are talking about having systems in place that will make policy launch successful.
Let me seek for you advice: I want to site a factory. Is it important to have raw materials close to the factory and have good roads leading to the factory? Or I should just build the factory first and later figure out other factors that will make the factory operate successfully?

The fufu analogy is about consequencies of actions; I only expect sensible people to understand that.

J12:

That's a very shallow method of thinking. Nigerians find it very difficult to look at the big picture. Think about the future after the policy is implemented and imagine the benefits on the economy, all these things you complained about will begin to develop when the policy is in full effect.

If you're told to eat 10 wraps of fufu to cure a serious sickness, won't you happily eat more than that?

You can give your advise below to GEJ. You will succeed as one of his special advisers.
Normally I don't reply to comments like this.
One thing I know for sure is that local car manufacturers will only prosper when heigher numbers of Nigerians are able to buy their products. As it is now their major customers are the government and large corporation. I appreciate your advise about working hard and saving money, I hope you follow the same.

J12:

IF YOU CANNOT BUY A MADE IN NIGERIA CAR, THEN WORK HARDER, SAVE AND EARN MORE MONEY SO YOU CAN AFFORD IT.

If you can't. Then stick to using commercial transportation.

And by the way do you need to increase import tariff in order to encourage local manufacturers?

That's like robbing peter (in this case the masses) by forcing them to buy cars that are not durable.

When you encourage 100-200 small modular power operators generating around 10MW per plant in each regions of Nigeria and dedicated to specific neighborhoods ...you can easily add around 2,000MW per region.....that is 12,000MW.

Honestly power generation and 24hr power supply is not a difficult science, as the likes of the Lagos State government, Dangote, Nigeria flour mills and BUA have proven to us.....its a science that have been in existence for several years ..

We just need a governemmt that can take such bold initiative and not the halfhearted privatization that was sold to us...

You have a good idea but not realistic in the Nigerian set up. These power stations will have to be run on gas. Therefore, a gas pipeline network will have to be setup to feed these stations. That's a huge project on its own, which will not solve the problem any quicker. I feel we only need to make the current system more efficient by ensuring adequate gas supply to the plants we currently have
