Today is the 39th anniversary of the brutal
assassination of Gen Murtala Muhammed:A genuine
patriot, panAfricanist and visionary leader. As school
children,we wept openly on that day,for a man whom
within the brief period of his reign made us proud as a
nation and asserted NIGERIA'S leadership role in
Africa. May Allah grant him aljanna firdausi,Amin

General Murtala Ramat Muhammed (November
8, 1938–February 13, 1976) was a military ruler
(Head of the Federal Military Government) of
Nigeria from 1975 until his assassination in 1976.
Murtala Muhammed was killed, aged 37, along with
his aide-de-camp, Lieutenant Akintunde
Akinsehinwa, on February 13, 1976 in an abortive
coup attempt led by Lt. Col Buka Suka Dimka, when
his car was ambushed while en route his office at
Dodan Barracks, Lagos. He was succeeded by the
Chief of Staff, Supreme HQ Olusegun Obasanjo,
who completed his plan of an orderly transfer to
civilian rule by handing power to Shehu Shagari on
October 1, 1979. Today, his portrait adorns the 20
Naira note and Murtala Muhammed International
Airport in Lagos is named in his honor

Anniversary of the brutal assassination?

Why does that look strange to me?

Am sure you are not celebrating his

assassination (thats how it sounds like). Why

not Remembrance or

something?

Please could you please explain more, read a lot of things about his death which sounded more like an assassination than a coup

I know some certain people would not pass up this opportunity to gloat. They never do, that's the only way they get to console themselves.

Murtala Mohammed proved any man can redeem himself.

RIP!

No. The coup was a plot by disgruntled Gowon supporters who never forgave Muritala Mohammed for removing their man via a coup.(at least one of the theories...and the one that makes the most sense.).
