Based on the number of threads regarding the issue of this section stagnating , I figured we could, instead of complaining, suggest ways on how to make this section lively again. It was through this section that I got interested in programming (web programming to be precise) in the first place and it feels really sad to see it go to waste like this. There is just too much potential and this section houses some of the brightest minds we have in Nigeria. I do hope that we can come together and suggest ways to give this section life. I will start first by saying that

* some of the threads that have no relation to programming should be deleted (not locked)

* if possible, before threads are finally pushed to this section, it should go through a moderator first who will then determine if said thread is appropriate for this section

* there should be a section for questions alone (programming related)

I still have more but I hope that others will contribute.

Thanks for creating this , I have good stuffs and they listed below

1. We take news from Sdtimes, Developer network and discuss them because these are future trends, meaning no more feeling comfy with PHP and stuff, this will enlighten people on what's being used and gear them towards researching on them.

2. We post topic on issues like Algorithm, Design Patterns or just discuss serious software development pratices.

3. We encourage topics to cater to beginners and help them to decide which path to take Script, static language , platform, Entreprise , Open Source and all.

4. We make room for freelance, software jobs and gigs and also monitor them so that if someone is trying to scam someone here on NL or isn't of good integrity we won't recommend the person, so this will be at the employer's risk.

5. Meetups if we can meet up in person though this is time consuming but if we could have conferences or so and promote a local community. when i was in Mauritius i was a member of Expat-blog meetup and a mauritian group meetup it was fun. its would be nice to have something like that, most of these companies support local meetups e.g PHP, Impresspages and even Python.

Anymore ideas will be shared.

Comment of the year, we need more people to contribute and also let's do our parts in the little way we can. This section must be given life.

1. Dislike Button.
2. Vote Up and Vote Down button.
3. Recommend button.
4. Creating child threads according to programming languages.
5. Allowing registered members to do little moderator's work like reviewing threads before been published.
6. Giving out small gifts like recharge cards to those who help in solving problems.

I am not a programmer yet but zealous to be one soon. Happy #val and good luck to you all.

What's your problem with php

Thanks for replying if you read my post properly I said no more feeling comfy with PHP and I have a reason for this statement. First I do PHP alot but having dabbled into other areas , ave gained lot of knowledge from other languages, you should know that the Yii and Laravel Frameworks got most of their inspiration from other languages mostly Yii from Ruby. Learning other languages forces you to gain new design patterns and perspective. PHP is awesome, but sometimes you just need to rise above PHP and try your hands in other things. am sure you would agree that focusing too much on PHP will make it hard for you to gain entry in other platform. I want NL to talk about Spring, grails,ActiveMQ so many awesome things. PHP well unless we are talking about advanced PHP Development something out of the norms.

This confirms what I've been suspecting... Unless blueeyegeek reported the posts... I now know NL is authoritative and doesn't allow discussions that can improve programmers.

This is why this section is losing users.
I didn't report any post (never really used that feature before). I guess the posts were off - topic. None of the other posts (on topic) were hidden

I think we need a code tag, All programming oriented forum should have this. This is a very crucial feature.

always throw up a coding yet tactical problem for programmer to trash out with a reward attached.
create social group of developers' contacts
permit ideas on how people can improve the system

Cool, something like that has been done here before and I think it was discontinued because of the reward parts. It will be better if the problems are presented for people to solve so that they can improve on their skills without necessarily getting any reward, learning in and of itself is a reward.
